I am no fan of these musical reality shows. I am just a follower of Hindi music industry. I've selected this forum to share some facts as I find many of the members of this forum are very keen to comment about music.
I find that many of the fans of these musical reality shows making comments in different forums as if dance numbers are inferior to soft/semi-classical/melodious/Sufi numbers.
The art Sangeet has been defined by the pundits of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music as a combination of three arts – Vocal music, instrumental music and dance, vocal music being the dominating element. But dance has always been a very important element of music as it provides the audience the visualization of the vocal or the instrumental piece of music being performed. Most types of African and Asian folk music are chiefly dance music. Only the Europe was the place where folk music was mostly melancholic; the mainstream music there was religious music. There, romantic music emerged only after the second half of eighteenth century. But even in Europe now, dance music dominates. Orthodox Islam does not support music. It is the Sufi people within Islam who started the practice of music; and even Sufi music is accompanied by the famous sacred Dervish dance.
So why so many people think that those who listen mostly to dance numbers are not "real music lovers" when the history of music is suggesting the opposite? Just to let you know the fact that one of the modern legends of melodious film songs is fond of dancing and two of the most melodious reality show singers (to defend whom some people call those contestants who sing mostly dance number as cheap singers) are crazy about dancing. Then why are some fans of these reality show singers saying that dance numbers are not as good as melodious numbers?
Do you think it is more difficult to sing melodious/classical/semi-classical songs than dance songs? There is no evidence to suggest that. Among the female singers there are only Asha ji and Sunidhi Chauhan who have got a lot of success by singing dance numbers. But in the genre of melodious singing, there are a number of legends like Lata ji, Janaki ji, Geeta Dutt ji, Chitra ji, Shreya Ghoshal and a number of singers from both Hindustani and Carnatic music. So if singing dance number were easier then there would have been a lot more singers in the list beside Sunidhi and Asha ji, especially when being a dance number singer is far more lucrative than being a melodious singer (per show, Sunidhi charges more than double of what Shreya charges).
Do you think melodious singers like Sonu Nigam ji or Shreya Ghoshal is more correct in 'sur' (pitch) than Sunidhi Chauhan? Melodyne and Autotune are the industry standard pitch-correction softwares. None of these softwares suggests that Sunidhi ji is any less correct in 'sur' (pitching) than Shreya Ghoshal or Sonu ji.
In Europe, USA, professional players are not allowed to listen to sad/emotional songs, or read sad/emotional stories, or watch sad/emotional movies in 48 hours prior to a match. Because watching/reading sad/emotional movies/stories or listening to sad/emotional songs destroys a person's physical energy.
It is a fact that many people prefer listening to sad/emotional songs over happy/dance numbers as many also prefer to read/watch bad news more than good news. This is called masochism. But at the same time, there are people who are mentally fit enough to celebrate happiness; they prefer listening to dance numbers over sad/emotional songs. Don't abuse them for the good condition of their mental health.
Many of you are very keen on lampooning supporters of Himesh Reshammiya. I myself don't like Himesh ji's singing. But I just want to point out the following truth to Himmesh-haters.
Music is now a part of showbiz where salability is the biggest determining factor for the survival of any type of music or any artist. And that's why Himesh Reshammiya is so important for the music industry. How good his music is, that is a different question; but the fact is that his fans at least buy legal copies of his music. In the film music industry, Himesh Reshammiya has the best success rate among all the music directors in last 7 years, as far as the sales record of legal copies of music is concerned. But the other side of the story is that even today, the number of people listening to melodious/soft/slow/romantic/Sufi Hindi songs are much larger than number of people listening to dance numbers. But statistics is telling that the former group mostly downloads pirated copies from different websites or watches the songs on Youtube or listens to them online. How good their taste is, that is a different question. But the fact is that a very large section of them practise piracy hence are corrupt. Still movie producers are keen on including melodious songs in their movies as melodious songs give movies good publicity. For audio sales, they rely on dance songs and put pressure on composers to produce fast songs
