Apne, Aap Ka Surroor rule box office

Eishita Chaturvedi

Wednesday, July 11, 2007: (Mumbai):

Last week the alphabet 'a' dominated box office and this week it's for success for both the films Apne and Aap ka Suroor.

On one hand there was Dharmendra and sons and on the other was Aap Ka Surroor, a love story starring Himesh Reshammiya.

On June 29, along with Awarapan released Apne and Aap Ka Surroor amidst hype and expectations and it's raking success for both the films.

"The collections have been very good," said P Prasad, Manager, Cinemax, Versova.

Trade analysts say Aap ka Surroor is a hit, the film has already earned more than Rs 9 crores in its first week, a film where the hero is a debutant musician and singer.

When it comes to Apne analysts say the film is a hit in certain areas and average at some. At the box office the film has earned more than Rs 4 crores.

"My film is still number 6 in the overseas market where films like Die Hard and Harry Potter have released and in Mumbai alone its earned some Rs 6 crores.

But it's truly a hit for Himesh whose film has worked well against Bollywood's most-known Punjabi family.

In fact there is a bit of Himesh in Apne as well. He's responsible for the music. So it wouldn't be wrong to say it was Himesh's musical versus his music.

Reshammiya rules in India

New Delhi, July 8 (IANS) Three films released a week ago with different storylines have grossed impressive collections in India and abroad, spiking the belief that multiple releases on a single day spell doom for one another.

Trade magazines had their fingers crossed about the success of the Deol starrer "Apne", the romantic-thriller "Aap Kaa Surroor" besides "Awarapan", dealing with flesh trade in Southeast Asia, all of which released on June 29.

"Apne", starring Dharmendra and his two sons Sunny and Bobby, has turned out an overseas hit by opening at No.6 position in Britain's charts. But in the domestic box office, except for northern India where the collections have been huge, it is only doing moderate business.

Himesh Reshammiya starrer "Aap Kaa Surroor" had a brilliant opening with around 95-100 percent collections across the country. Trade data showed that at several centres its launch was at par with the 2006 mega hits "Krrish" and "Dhoom 2".

In Britain, "Apne" has collected Rs.14.7 million while "Aap Kaa Surroor" has grossed over Rs.4 million. In Australia, "Apne" has collected around Rs.1 million.

"Candyfloss also does well abroad," Suleman Mobhani, veteran trade analyst and co-founder of IndiaFm, a top Bollywood trade website, told IANS.

"Overseas audience loves family movies. With the social structure of nuclear families abroad, a dramatic, emotional family movie has always done well and attracted people. Earlier, films like 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' had taken the overseas box office by storm."

He added: "But Himesh is a people's hero in India. His film is doing phenomenal business mainly because of the promotions it had. It started advertising the film much before the others did and the best part was that the promos created a curiosity in the minds of the people."

"Awarapan", from the celebrated Bhatt camp, was hit initially because of the multiple release factor and poor promotions, business is picking up in India and abroad.

"'Awarapan' should have done better business but it was not promoted well," Mobhani said. "The film has excellent songs."

Himesh's final resolve: 3 films in first round

By Taran Adarsh, July 11, 2007 - 09:05 IST

Now that AAP KAA SURROOR has worked at the box-office, Himesh Reshammiya has finally made a firm resolution. The music composer turned singer turned actor has decided to concentrate on three films as an actor, besides the sequel to A.K.S., in the first year.

Ever since the release of the film, acting offers have been pouring incessantly, but Himesh hasn't picked up any project so far. Besides acting in those projects, Himesh would also be singing and composing music of those films. In simple words, it means Himesh wouldn't be accepting any other assignment as music composer/singer/actor, other than these films.

Also, there'll be a sufficient gap between AAP KAA SURROOR and his next film, so that the craze to watch HR on the big screen will build up again. Sure, Himesh is making the right moves, instead of falling to temptations.

Hey guyz found this transcript.....so njoy 😉
btw.....There woz some pics 2 which i'v posted in the gallery. 😉

Guess who Himesh Reshammiya's love guide is

After the success of his acting debut Aap Kaa Surroor, Himesh Reshammiya's cell phone and doorbell have not stopped ringing.
As he receives congratulatory calls and bouquets, Himesh claims that his mission has been accomplished. There seems to be no doubt about his fan following, as Rediff Readers had a blast chatting with him on July 5.

For those who miss the fun, here's the first part of his chat transcript.

Himesh Reshammiya says, Hello, I am here to answer your questions. Love u all.

Dinesh asked, Hi, congrats for your biggest opening. It's good to hear about it as I am a big fan of yours.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Thank You very much, God Bless you.

Rosh asked, Himesh, the musician, singer, reality show host, actor... what next? Politics?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, No politics, only singing, acting and music together.

Chamiya asked, Himesh, don't quit singing, don't run after acting. You sing well, please keep it alive.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I am not going to act without singing. The film which I act will have my music and singing.
Yogesh77dehradun asked, What's the reason you wear cap all the time?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, The reason I wear cap, you will know in the sequel (of Aap Kaa Surroor)

anil_b83@rediffmail.com asked, When will you marry and to whom?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I am married but I don't talk about my personal life.

Sachin 9819462993 asked, I want to meet you. Will you spare some time to come at my home at Dombivali?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Very soon I will start my fan club. You can meet me there.
Topiwale asked, Hi Himesh, what made you act in a film?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, The love of my fans and my instincts.

himeshanshu asked, Sir, is the script of Aap Kaa Surroor 2 ready?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Work is in progress.

Rupert asked, When is your next US tour?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Approximately, in October.
Topiwaale asked, How was dancing with Mallika like? I think Helen had more oomph than Mallika, but Mallika had better assets I suppose.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Helenji was fantastic and we tried our level best

paras2 asked, Himeshbhai. Please organise Dandia Night in Ahmedabad this Navratri.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Will do it for you, very soon.

atul555 asked, Why are you accepting that you are nasal singer now?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I can't handle these controversies anymore. So, I felt it is better to accept it and end this controversy.

samuel asked, Himesh, if you fall in love, who would you like to be your love guide? lol
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Shah Rukh Khan because he is most romantic hero of Indian films.

bond asked, Hi Himesh. I wanted to ask you a question. I saw some of your songs initially but all were filled with sorrows. Initially I thought you might have chosen that subject for a particular song. But later on, you were picturising the songs with the same visual effect. So, to be frank, I stopped seein your videos. I would like to tell you one thing: it's really very easy to make someone cry and it's really very hard to make someone laugh. People come to the theaters or watch TV for timepass, and to forget their daily stress. If they get depressed by seeing some video, I don't think it would be a better option of entertainment. Hope you can understand and will not disappoint viewers like me.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I will make people laugh in the sequel. In my forthcoming project, my outlook will be completely different.

Arunabha asked, Do you have any preference for your caps, style and colour ?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I have 2,000 caps and I cannot choose any particular. I just pick up one.

sukeshs_shetty asked, Hi HR. You are a good actor.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Thank you, God bless.

Dhiraj asked, How and when did you start your music composition and when did u start singing? Please tell us about the way you started and the struggle you had to go through. It can b a source of inspiration.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I started at the age of 13 and I got a break from Salman Khan [Images] in Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya. It is possible because of all you people, God and blessings of my parents.

parm asked, hi Himesh may I know why you are not smiling at all
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I am smiling now. My film is a hit. Why am I so intense? You will come to know if you watch Aap Ka Suroor. If you have not seen it, please go and watch it.

shreejiconstknp asked, You are a good singer, good actor & good music director. We heard that you are Gujarati. What are you doing to make Gujaratis proud?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I will definetly try and do something for the Gujarati film industry in the near future. I am proud to be a Gujarati and I love the people of Gujarat.

Prathamesh asked, Sir, you are my idol. As you always say, No gain without pain and speak from your heart. Do you have any message for your fans like me? Believe me, we are 6 people sitting here waiting to ask you this! We had planned to come to cafe only for you and it can be said now it was worth!
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Same here. I am man of few words and I feel from heart. Zindagi jiyo dil se.

vijay123 asked, One thing I appreciate about you -- you are original, however bad maybe your music.
Himesh Reshammiya answers, Critics have always been against me. They are the one percent with the other 99 percent on my side. Though Banaras, which I did for critics bombed, I will still try to win them. Thank you for saying, my music is original.

himeshanshu asked, Sir, can we expect Salman Khan in your sequel?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I can't comment on it right now.

yahoooooooo i am talking to himesh asked, Himesh, what kind of roles do you want to play in your forthcoming films?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, All kinds of roles which a good actor can perform. Uncoventional but commercial. I intend to do three films a year.

Prite asked, How do you rate yourself as an actor?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, That is for the audience to judge. I cannot comment on this.

prasantakumardash asked, Would you like to sing for Amitabh Bachchan [Images]?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, I would love to sing for Big B [Images]. I idiolise him but I don't think the audience will accept this.

himeshanshu asked, Sir, when is your birthday?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, July 23.

RTT asked, Do the video songs picturised on you depict your real life?
Himesh Reshammiya answers, It depicts the journey of a true lover because everyone has fallen in love at least once and even lost.

Of stubbles and nasal voices
13 Jul, 2007 l 0000 hrs ISTlSUBHASH K JHA /TNN

From Madan Mohan to Himesh, what a journey our film music has made!
WAS it just a coincidence that a beautifully-illustrated book by Vishwas Nerurkar and Bishwanath Chatterjee tiltled Ultimate Melodies, encompassing the reminiscences and recollections on composer par excellence Madan Mohan and dedicated to The Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar, came out a week after Himesh Reshammiya's acting debut?

From Madan Mohan to Himesh, what a journey our film music has made! If Madan Mohan were alive today I wonder what he would think of the rock-stadia tracks that pass off as phillum music!

Mushqil hai jeena bedardon ki duniya mein???? Madan Mohan would have probably made his muse Lata Mangeshkar sing the classic about displaced emotions all over again.

But even Madan Mohan would have recognised Himesh for what he is€India's first and only singing star.

Face it guys, and cleanse your souls; Himesh is, at present, the biggest superstar in the country. His popularity far exceeds that of any other acknowledged Fridaycrowd-puller .

Himesh, on the other hand, has always been at the receiving end. Everyone from Sonu Nigam, who tried being a leading man and failed miserably, to Asha Bhosle who once wanted to slap Himesh, saw him as cap-tune upstart; the typical Johnny-come-yodelling who needed to be spanked for his gumption.

'How dare he?' was the catty mantra to shoo Himesh off the charts. Himesh hung on. He silenced his critics. But, er, he couldn't silence THE critics.

Himesh can't act for nuts€. But he isn't acting for nuts. Himesh represents the triumph of the nonglamorous everyman who proudly eats his dinner with his fingers and sings Mohd Rafi's songs loudly in the bathroom. That's what his reinvention from chubby Gujju dhoklaboy with a perpetual bad-hair day - who stuck around Salman Khan composing assignments - to a guru-kool dude with stubble and attitude to match.

Someday I'd like to write a book about your rise, Himesh.

It's amazing what stubble and the accompanying attitude can do for a guy's career. Ask Abhishek Bachchan, the day he acquired both (stubble and attitude) his personality and career changed forever . Ask Gulzar Saab, the master of constant stubble trouble.

I think stubborn stubble did the trick for Himesh far more than the nasal voice.

Nasal singing is nothing new in Hindi films. KL Saigal and Mukesh did it decades ago. And Sonu Nigam goes discernibly nasal on the higher notes. So what's new about Himesh?

Well, Himesh has made the nose a tool of erotic expression. In his hands, the nose attains a near-phallic status, akin to Jimmy Hendrix's guitar or Ravi Shankar's sitar.

Who 'nose' , his naak-naakwho's-there status in the charts may be enshrined in a museum some day. For now, we could stop making ourselves look ridiculous by questioning and ridiculing his rock-star status.

I've seen youngsters in cinemahalls wearing Himesh caps throwing off their shirts in wild frenzy when he starts singing. I've seen his fans identify with his brooding sultry attitude to life to the extent that they've given up smiling. "Because Himeshbhai doesn't smile" what else?

From Asha Parekh to Sanjay Leela Bhansali to Himesh Reshammiya , the Gujju invasion of Bollywood is complete. It's time Himesh wasn't made to feel constantly apologetic about his superstardom . It's time we recognised the sheer marketing genius of the man.

Yup, the chokra-next-door has arrived . He can't act. And according to the cynics, he can't sing either. But watch him do both without the fear of falling.

Forgive the critics father, they've sinned against the singing. As for Himesh's acting abilities? Really, who cares? Does anyone of those youngsters jumping out of their seats on a sweltering Sunday afternoon when the magic of the matinee manoeuvres Himesh's stardom to dizzying hypes, really care if Himesh can act or can't act?

Resham-mian serenades

At the half-year mark, Bollywood has in its kitty a hugely successful singing hero besides the usual mix of hits and flops.

Himesh Reshammiya: Crooning glory

Shubhra Gupta

About a month ago, a Himesh Reshammiya special on a TV news channel got jammed. He was on live, the phone lines had been opened, and the calls wouldn't stop coming. It got to a point where the reception was told to stop taking all calls.

The TV spot was positioned ahead of Reshammiya's debut film Aap Ka Surroor, and was a sign of how the movie would fare at the box office. It's broken all the opening records in 2007, and is still doing good business. Sol d for over Rs 1.5 crore in the Delhi-UP circuit, it's already made nearly double that; everyone associated with the movie, the producers, the distributors and the exhibitors, are ecstatic.

What makes a movie featuring a singer who has a fetish for caps, and jackets and facial hair, such a magnet? Admittedly, Reshammiya has legions of fans, who adore his flagrantly high-pitched nasal voice. There are those who believe that actor Emraan Hashmi, whose playback voice Reshammiya has been, got so popular because of the latter (there was a time when Aashiq Banaya Aapne was blaring from as many autorickshaws as there are on the road in North India). In an attempt to cash in on this craze for him, Reshammiya had, of late, been appearing in music videos.

But a full-length, two-and-a-half hour feature is not the same thing as a two-and-a-half minute song. There have been other playback singers who've been bitten by the acting bug, got producers to put them into movies, and have been roundly rejected. Sonu Nigam is a recent case in point who came on and went off, and now sticks to playback singing.

The right pitch

Industry watchers point out a crucial difference between Reshammiya and other wannabe hopefuls; he has been working towards a film right from the time it was evident to him, and his backers, that he could carry the connect with his listeners on to a screen, that people wanted to both listen to him and see him.

Unlike Nigam, who tried a conventional singing-dancing fictional route, Reshammiya plays himself, a rising singer, who goes by the name of HR. So the audience doesn't have to work at identifying with another character. They've come to see the singer, and that's what they get: Reshammiya in his trademark caps, and long, modish jackets, singing his songs. The bonus comes in the shape of the ultra-curvaceous Mallika Sherawat, and debutant heroine Hansika Motwani — who is youthful and fresh, and virgin locations in Germany, in that order.

Aap Ka Surroor has come just at the right time for Bollywood, whose report card at the six-month mark this year shows more big-budget flops than this time in 2006. Reshammiya's movie is making the trade smile, as is Anil Sharma&# 8217;s Apne, which presents for the first time all three Deols together — papaji Dharmendra with sonny boys Sunny and Bobby. It may not be as big a success as Aap Ka Surroor because it was an expensive movie at Rs 20-plus crore, but its steady performance proves there are enough takers still for Garam Dharam, who is still, despite the wrinkles and the distinctly ageing profile, a star.
