It's the starting era of Indian film music. Saw music directors like Khemchand Prakash, R.C. Boral and Pankaj Mullick who purely believed in Hindustani Classical music. The concept of playback singing was not in the air and the filmstars of those days used to sing their own songs. This era of music has seen singers/actors like Ashok Kumar, Noorjehan, Suraiya and Devika Rani. The recordings were done in one shot and there was no scope of error during recordings.

Worth listening albums of this era - Achchhut Kanya, Bandini, Raja Harishchandra, Street Singer, Millionaire

Now, it's over to you all to continue the discussion.😊

Just read the first para and here are my views...

- Not sure if Khemchand Prakash have composed music in the 30s but will check
- Anil Biswas, Timir Baran, Meer Saaheb, Gyan Dutt, Saraswati Devi are notable omissions in the list of MDs on that period
- Suraiyya's first role in a movie was in 1941 and her first solo I think was the next year - 'Panchhi Ja'
- Puran Bhagat, Chandidas, President, Kapal Kundala, Devdas, Mukti
- Pahari Sanyal, Khursheed, Surendra, KC Dey were other singers who contributed in this era

great topic Barnali....here's my reply to ur questions😊

If you have to choose your favorite song out of all the eight eras, which song will you choose???

It's diificult to choose because in these eight eras there r many songs which r my fav.........but if I have to choose one song I will choose 'Bholi Surat Dil Ke Khote Naam Bade aur Darashan Khote' its from Albela(1951) MD- C. Ramchandra.

What appeals to you more, melody or rhythm?

of course melody

How important is lyrics for a song?

very important....lyrics do allow songs to be used in particular way....lyrics facilitate certain creative articulations.

If you were given a choice to decide what type of songs you wanted, which type would you opt for?

well I like all type of songs.....only thing is song should be soothing not loud.

And lastly which in your opinion was the best era till now in bollywood music?

In my opinion 50's and 60's r best era till now in bollywood music.

The first half of this era was exactly similar to the 30s. The second half saw the emergence of K L Sehgal as an artist and singer. He was so famous that later singers like Mohd. Rafi and Mukesh tried to immitate him. This era saw the emergence of C.H.Atma and Naushad as music directors. The second half introduced the playback singing. C.H. Atma, himself had hit songs like Mandwe tale gareeb ke to his credit. After the partition, Noorjehan left for Pakistan and Bollywood saw the emergence of Lata Mangeshkar as playback singer. She got her first success with music director Ghulam Haider. Mukesh and Rafi also evolved as good singers - thanks to Naushad Sahab.

Worth listening albums of this era - Tansen, Shahjahan, Parwana, My Sister,Shaheed

- Rafi saaheb modelled himself more on the lines of GM Durrani.
- Suraiyya introduced
- Husnlal Bhagatram, Shyam Sundar, Hansraj Behl,
- Kismet, Khazanchi, Humayun, Lahore, Bazaar, Tansen, Anmol Ghadi, Andaz, Mela, Mahal, Barsaat

When I was growing up, cassettes were the most popular form of recorded medium. You could purchase your favorite musician's latest release, but knew that you had to either make a copy onto a blank cassette or re-purchase the same recording several months later. Cassette tapes would inevitably break, wear out, or melt if exposed to extreme temperatures. Finally, compact discs emerged and quickly grew popular in this wonderful culture that centers around technology. CDs boasted infinite playback capabilities if treated properly.

Music has traversed a long way both in quality of output and medium of listening over the ages. Technology has played the fairy godmother in aiding us through the transition of Gramophone to Long Playing records, Magnetic cassettes to the currently popular compact Discs. The most important revolution though has been the cyber spider who has woven all of us in its world wide web. The Internet has cut across all channels, and now we have the immensely popular MP3 music.

This compressed file contains your favorite song in around 5 to 8 MB giving you near to the quality of tape or Disc. Instead of walking into your favorite Electronic shop for picking up the new player one can just download the latest version from the Internet which gives similar features.

This is a great thread Barnalidi.👏 You are so right about the golden era music as being referred the "rona dhona" songs nowadays. Yet its these songs that have become immortal due to their melodies and lyrics. There are too many songs that come to mind but I will pick a few from each era that I have heard and liked.

If you have to choose your favorite song out of all the eight eras, which song will you choose???

1940s: Papa used to put me to sleep when I was very little with K.L. Saigal melody Soja Rajkumari Soja😳 so my first tribute is to K.L. Saigal:

1. Do Naina Tihare Matware, Hum Par Zurm Kare.......

2. Mei Kya Janu Kya Jaado Hai

1950s: Bhai has a shrine here of R.K. Films and music from his movies.

1. Tu Kahe Agar Jivan Bhar from Andaz

2. Rasik Balma Haye Dil Kyu Lagaya Tumse..... Lataji from Chori Chori

1960s:

1. Mohe Panghat Pe Nand Laal Chad Gayo Re....... Lataji Mough e Azam

2. Chaudvi Ka Chaand Ho........ Rafisaab from the same movie

1970s:

1. Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai........ Manna Dey from Seema

2. Kuch toh log kahenge ....... Kishoreda .... Amar Prem

3. Yeh Kya Hua......... Kishoreda......... Amar Prem

What appeals to you more, melody or rhythm?

It has to be Melody for me.

How important is lyrics for a song?

Lyrics are very important for a song because lyrics describe a situation that relates to a particular incident and situation.

If you were given a choice to decide what type of songs you wanted, which type would you opt for?

I would like a song which has good lyrics and is melodious that touches the heart and is rememberd for a long time.

And lastly which in your opinion was the best era till now in bollywood music?

I think the 50s to the 70s

Didi,

My thought's on Bollywood Music the Complete journey.!!

The golden era of Hindi music cannot be judge in an hour conversation. The judgment on any music or any lyrics of any era cannot be compare with different generation. Each Era has there own way of expressing itself. Each generation showing there enthusiasm and there creativity and each trend is relevant and justified in the society. Lyrics of each song then had to be more powerful than melodious. On today's era love and romance and melody are back. And that's a very good sign.

All music directors take inspiration, from those before them, or elsewhere. A popular trend is going on now which is copying more and more which is called Inspirations in this era,yes so called golden era they also did some but not like what we see today, we all know that music has no boundary or border but that doesn't mean that we free to copy anything and every thing while doing that we did lost the originality of music more and more song sound very repetitive now than before. In fact now we are discovering that everyone, from Madan Mohan to S. D. Burman to Shankar-Jaikishen to all the other greats, has merrily taken tunes from western compositions at some point or the other which Including Naushad also so I don't see any harm in being inspired by someone else.

From the mid-forties to the mid-seventies, there was a coming together of all the greatest. As far as the influence of western music on Indian tunes which goes to age-old trends now only been it has been stepped up more with globalization.

In eighties when the quality of music went down and lyrics turned mundane, I think I will blame it on the times. That was the time when society was disillusioned and angry and when films turned violent and more exposer of sexes. So music had to suffer too.

Excellent thoughts Bobda. Now I have a query. Something I have made many times now.

Yes it is true starting from SDBurman, Salil Chaudhury till Anu Malick all have copied tunes sometime or the other. We know the famous incident between Sajjad Hussain and Salil Chaudhury where sajaad Ji had charged Salilda for copying one his tunes but not giving him his due. Salilda had replied to that saying it was not copying it was inspiration and I made sure to get inspired of an A-grade tune and not a B-grade one.

So according to Salilda too it is fine when you copy. Many call it inspiration. But why is it that for those MD's the term Inspiration is used when they copy but as soon as it is Anu Malick, Preetam or HR the term becomes Plagiarisation? Till 90's era MD's rarely you will find this plagiarisation term being used. It is the MD's of millenium who get tagged with the term. WHY??
