I have similar experience... almost everyone who has heard me says my voice resembles sonuji/rafi(depending on whose song i sing) That is just a coincidence...i never tried to copy them intentionally...and i cant help it..But there have been occasions when i have sung arijit/kishore kumar/mukesh/shaan/Kunal/atif/adnan/himesh n told that my voice is like them...Thats partly due to the fact that voice automatically becomes like that at times and party its due to mimickery - eg atif, adnan, himesh, spb subramanium, mohm aziz, suresh wadekar, vinod rathore, lucky ali etc is due to mimickery not a coincidence! So there Im ok being called a copycat because thats the truth
2. Keep exploring buddy...there is no limit... recently i sang a kannada song although i dn know the language..coming to ur voice, also try English songs at my request..Its fun n u can sing well coz like ur idol asha, u must be versatile too..
3. I agree natural voice is something to be given precedence and that mimickery is actually tougher than singing in own voice..
4. I stopped mimickery unless requested by friends (they find it entertaining)
A- i have become more meticulous now regarding technical aspects and thats extremely tough to achieve while mimickery as im untrained..
B - people think u dn have any identity of ur own
C - u may come across as a wannabe! Like why will a person who is gifted himself/herself want to sound like the latest sensation! In a way u r devaluing urself..
These 3 points are from a critics lens just for the sake of a different perspective 😊
