On certain evenings, the moon sings and the mind remains still. For someone, you can be the moon, and yet you can harbour jealousy toward the stars!! smiley1

Sharing a rare early Kishoreda - Lataji duet

Mohabbat ki basti basayenge hum

Film: Fareb (1953)

Music: Anil Biswas

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

I love the way this tune ebbs and flows - Anilda composed a great tune and Kishoreda sounds different here, this was before playback singing stardom had found him and I may be one of those rare people who love Kishoreda's 50s-60s songs more than the ones he did later in the 70s-80s when he actually ruled the playback singing realm.

Song - Chota Sa Ghar Hoga

Movie - Naukri (1954)

Singer(s) - Kishore Kumar, Usha Mangeshkar

Music - Salil Chowdhury

Lyricist - Shailendra

I heard this gem in a Spotify list of 60s rock classics that I listen to on my daily walk...What a song this is! Quintessential 60s and talks about something that is so relevant even today!! I mean look at the lyrics...

For what it's worth - Buffalo Springfield

There's something happening here

But what it is ain't exactly clear

There's a man with a gun over there

Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop

Children, what's that sound?

Everybody look, what's going down?

There's battle lines being drawn

Nobody's right if everybody's wrong

Young people speaking their minds

Getting so much resistance from behind

It's time we stop

Hey, what's that sound?

Everybody look, what's going down?

What a field day for the heat

A thousand people in the street

Singing songs and they carrying signs

Mostly say, "Hooray for our side"

It's time we stop

Hey, what's that sound?

Everybody look, what's going down?

Paranoia strikes deep

Into your life it will creep

It starts when you're always afraid

Step out of line, the men come and take you away

We better stop

Hey, what's that sound?

Everybody look, what's going down?

Though Stephen Stills was inspired to write this because of the riots that took place in clashes between the Police and youth in Los Angeles in 1966, For what it's worth has come to be widely regarded as an Anti-war song.

And Buffalo Springfield.. what an assembly of talent - mainly Stephen Stills and Neil Young who both later teamed with two more talented gentlemen to form Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and gave us more great songs.

Please give this a listen --- if you haven't already.

Misirlou by Dick Dale.. the tune that became famous later because of Pulp Fiction but man, what a banger this is!

The origin of this tune is unknown though it has roots in Greek, Egyptian and Arabian folk music. Misirlou in Greek (Turkish) means Egyptian woman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIU0RMV_II8

Missirlou was first aired in Athens around 1927 by Dimitris Patrinos, a musician from Smyrni. The song refers to a Christian's love for a Muslim, a theme-taboo for that time and not only. The melody either existed before and was a familiar listening in the wider area of the Ottoman Empire, or it is a group work of Patrinos' band. The only sure thing is that Patrinos wrote the lyrics. The international journey of the song began in 1930 by the US, with the release of Orthophonic album by Greek-American Titos Dimitriadis. In 1941 another Greek-American, musician Nikos Roubani changed his tone and melody, giving him the oriental sound he is known today. Make sure he has his name as composer of the song. As no one has disputed this right, Roubani appears as a composer of Misirllos all over the world except for Greece.Immediately after the adaptation of Rubanis, the song became part of the repertoire of great swing-era orchestras such as Harry James, Woody Herman and Xavier Kughat. But the great success for Missirlou came in the early 1960s by Surf-Rock artists. At the beginning, guitarist Dick Dale, a Lebanese musician (Richard Mansour's real name), started playing a solo with a single string of guitar. He chose Missirlou to respond to the challenge. In 1963, the great The Beach Boys featured in Surfin 'USA a performance of Dale's song, making Missirlo part of the surf tradition as well as American pop culture. In 1994, Missirlou in the performance of Dick Dale came back to the fore as he was listening to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, while in 2006 he became popular as the basis for the Black Eyed Peas, Pump it.

The original song. The instrumental sounds wayyyy cooler and of course, it has become iconic because of that Riff... you know the one I mean!

Here's the Beach Boys' version from their Surfin' USA album: It's the version I heard first and have been hooked ever since.

I was just browsing along and YT threw this at me and since Janmashtami just went by it just seemed like divine Providence.

And this woman gets it. Being a foreigner idk how she pinpoints the nuances in the song so accurately but boy, she hits the nail on the head.

It IS a beautiful composition based on Raag Todi and it IS my favorite from this album (Chala vahi des) which is a compilation of Meera Bhajans sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by her brother, Pt. Hridyanath Mangeshkar. This entire album is filled with gems such as: Kenun Sang Khelun Holi, Mhara Re Giridhar Gopal, Sanvara re Mhari Preet Nibhajoji, Maee Mharo Supnama Parnaya re (My second favorite in the album), but this one (the very first song) is hard to surpass (imho).

I listen and watch her gush at Lata ji's vocals and I'm like.. same, sister, same!
