Today is Oct 25th,Sharda Rajan Iyengar's Birth Annivarsary, known professionally as Sharda, was an Indian playback singer most active in the 1960s and 1970s. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the cabaret "Baat Zara Hai Aapas Ki" in Jahan Pyar Miley (1970), though she is most remembered for her song "Titli Udi" in Suraj (1966). In 2007, she released her album Andaaz-E-Bayan Aur, featuring her own compositions based on Mirza Ghalib's ghazals.

Sharda was from an Iyengar family from Tamil Nadu, India and was inclined towards music from childhood.[citation needed] She graduated[where?][when?] with a BA degree.[

Early in her career Sharda was offered a voice test by Raj Kapoor when he first heard her singing at Shrichand Ahuja's residence in Tehran. She got her first big break in Bollywood with the song "Titli Udi" in Suraj (1966). She was promoted by Shankar of the Shankar Jaikishan duo.[2]

"Titli udi" turned out to be a top chartbuster in 1966. It so happens that the coveted Filmfare award for best playback singer had only one category (either male or female) until 1966. "Titli Udi" song, however, was tied as best song with Mohd Rafi's song "Baharo Phool Barsao" which had never happened before. Sharda didn't win the award but from then on Filmfare started giving two awards for best playback singer: one for male singer and the other for female singer. Thus Sharda made history. Thereafter Sharda was nominated four years in a row (1968–71) for best female playback singer and won another Filmfare award. In a short span Sharda won two Filmfare awards, when the Mangeshkar Sisters were dominating. Thereafter she continued singing for Shankar in nearly all of his films until his death. Her voice was last heard in Kaanch Ki Deewar (1986).

She sang with singers such as Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Yesudas, Mukesh, and Suman Kalyanpur.[citation needed] She lent her voice to leading ladies of the time like Vyjayanthimala, Rajshree, Sadhana, Saira Banu, Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Rekha, and Helen.[citation needed] In addition to Shankar, she recorded songs with Usha Khanna, Ravi, Dattaram, Iqbal Qureshi, and others.[citation needed] She was the first Indian female singer to record her own pop album in India[citation needed] with Sizzlers, released in 1971 by HMV.

The daughter of director Ravi Tandon, she made her acting debut in the 1991 action film Patthar Ke Phool, which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Tandon established herself by playing the leading lady in the commercially successful action films Dilwale (1994), Mohra (1994), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), and Ziddi (1997).[2] She earned a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1994 drama Laadla and in the late 1990s, she collaborated with Govinda in several successful comedies, including Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), Dulhe Raja (1998) and Anari No.1 (1999). She also played against type in the crime dramas Ghulam-E-Mustafa (1997) and Shool (1999).

In the 2000s, Tandon ventured into arthouse cinema with roles in the 2001 films Daman and Aks, both of which garnered her critical acclaim, winning the National Film Award for Best Actress for the former and a Filmfare Special Performance Award for the latter.

Tandon began dating film distributor Anil Thadani, during the making of her film Stumped (2003). Their engagement was announced in November 2003.[44] She married Thadani on 22 February 2004 in Jag Mandir Palace, Udaipur, Rajasthan according to Punjabi Khatri and Sindhi traditions.[45] Tandon gave birth to her daughter Rasha, in March 2005.[46] In July 2008, she gave birth to her son Ranbirvardhan.

Tandon has often been regarded as one of the most popular actresses of the 1990s.[49] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare stated, "Tandon was one of the most vivacious actresses to have graced the silver screen."[50] Rediff.com noted, "Ravishing and Raveena are synonymous with each other."[51] Outlook India noted, "Tandon's filmography boasts of commercial entertainers as well as offbeat movies."[52] Times Now termed the actress "ravishing and rebellious".

Throughout her career, Tandon was widely known for her dance numbers. Praising her dance, Filmfare noted, "A natural dancer who radiated oomph by the bucket, Raveena literally set the silver screen on fire with her moves."[50][54] Tandon termed her performance in Shool and Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence, as the ones that changed the perception of the audience. She added,

"People took me seriously as an actor after Shool and Daman. I was being perceived only as a 'pretty face' until these films showcased my acting capabilities."[55]

In 2023, the Government of India honoured Tandon with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award, for her contribution to Indian cinema.[56] Tandon appeared on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list of 2019, ranking 89th, with an estimated annual income of ₹24 million (US$290,000).[57] She appeared on Box Office India's list of three "Top Actresses" of 1994.[2] Rediff.com placed Tandon in their "Best Bollywood Actresses" list of 2002 and 2021.[58][59] Tandon is a celebrity endorser for brands including iAir, Lux, 7 Up and Emami.[60][61] In 2016, Rapper Badshah used Tandon's name in his song "Kar Gayi Chull", from the film Kapoor & Sons.
