Smita Patil was widely regarded as one of the best actresses of her generation and was equally at ease in mainstream commercial Bollywood films as well as the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 80s. Her untimely death at the age of 31 years left the whole industry in a shock.

Smita was a popular face on Indian television as a news broadcaster for Mumbai Doordarshan before she made her name as an actress in the movies.

Personal Life
Smita was an active feminist. She was a member of the Women`s Centre in Mumbai. She had always been deeply committed to the cause of women empowerment.

She courted controversy when after becoming romantically involved with the actor Raj Babbar. He left his wife to marry her. They have a child named Prateik Babbar from their marriage. She died due to childbirth complications on 13th December 1986, just two weeks after delivering Prateik.

Movie Career
Smita debuted as an actress with a supporting role in Mere Saath Chal (1974). Her first major film was Shyam Benegal`s Charandas Chor (1975). But it is the film Nishaant (1975) that first got her acclaim. She came to be recognized as an actress with substance and went on to act in films from the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s. She played a feisty village woman in Manthan (1976), and a gullible young girl lured into the big bad world of movies in Bhumika (1977), which won Smita her first National Award. Her authentic portrayal of a slum dweller in Chakra (1981) also earned her a National Award. Aakrosh (1980), Arth (1982), Ardha Satya (1983) were her other notable performances from the parallel cinema movement.

Smita, however, was equally at ease in mainstream commercial films like Shakti (1982) and Namak Halal (1982). She also appeared in various Marathi films like Samna (1974), Jait Re Jait (1977) and Umbartha (1982). The Ketan Mehta directed Hindi film Mirch Masala (1987), which was also one of her last performances, is widely regarded as her best.

Sunny Deol (born 19 October 1956) is an Indian actor, director and producer having acted in over 90 films in Bollywood, who was highly successful in the 1990s and has earned various accolades including two National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards.

Deol in 2019
Deol debuted in his father's production Betaab (1983) directed by Rahul Rawail, which was a commercial success. It was followed by numerous roles in some other films of that decade including Sohni Mahiwal (1984), Arjun (1985) and Paap Ki Duniya (1988).[2] In 1989, his role as a police officer in Tridev was highlighted and he also appeared in ChaalBaaz; both were among the top 5 highest earning films of the year.[3]

Deol appeared in the lead role of a boxer in another of his father's productions Ghayal, directed by debutante Rajkumar Santoshi, which became the year's second top-grossing film. It established and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and National Film Special Jury Award.[4] In 1993, Deol reunited with Santoshi to play an alcoholic lawyer in the highly successful social drama Damini and was awarded the Filmfare Award and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.[5] That year, his character of an lieutenant army officer in Yash Chopra's psychological thriller Darr earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Actor nomination.[6] In 1996 he appeared as a criminal in Raj Kanwar's action film Jeet. He also worked with Santoshi a third time in Ghatak.[7] Three years later, he produced and directed his brother's starrer Dillagi (1999), in which he had a lead role too, but the film failed to gain success.

In 2001, Deol featured as a Sikh truck driver who loves a Muslim woman in Anil Sharma's patriotic action drama portraying the India-Pakistan partition of 1947, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, opposite Amisha Patel. The film became the highest-grossing Hindi film up until then in mainstream cinema earning over ₹1.3 billion (US$16 million) worldwide and he was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor once again.[9] In the same year, he worked in another highly successful action thriller film Indian (2001).[10] He went on to appear in several films co-starring his father and brother, such as Apne (2007) and the Yamla Pagla Deewana film series (2011–18).[11] In 2016, Deol directed and starred in a sequel to Ghayal. He launched and directed his elder son as an actor in the romantic thriller Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (2019).

Shammi Kapoor (born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor, was an Indian movie actor and director. He was a famous lead actor in Hindi cinema from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He was known as "India's Elvis Presley".

He acted in 100's of popular movies such as Rajkumar (1964), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Janwar (1965), Teesri Manzil (1966), An Evening In Paris (1967), Brahmachari (1968) and Prince (1969). For Brahmachari, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Following his leading role in Andaz (1971), he began to appear in supporting roles. His notable such roles include - Parvarish (1977), Prem Rog (1982), Vidhaata (1982), Betaab (1983), Hero (1983), Sohni Mahiwal (1984), Wanted (1984), Hukumat (1987), Daata (1989), Tahalka (1992), Chamatkar (1992), Gardish (1993) and Rockstar (2011), which was his final film. Prabodh Chandra Dey (May 1, 1919 − October 24, 2013), known by his stage name Manna Dey, was a renowned Indian playback singer, music director, and musician. He had a classical music background, being part of the Bhendibazaar Gharana and receiving training under Ustad Aman Ali Khan.[5] Manna Dey is widely recognized as one of the most versatile and celebrated vocalists in the Hindi film industry,[6][7][8] and is often acknowledged for his significant contributions to integrating Indian classical music into Hindi commercial cinema.[8] As a musician, Dey is particularly acclaimed for incorporating Indian classical music elements into a pop musical framework, a contribution that played a pivotal role during the golden era.

By 1954, Dey became popular among musical circle across film industries of various Indian languages. He became nationally famous after release of Do Bigha Zamin (1953) where two of the songs sung by him and composed by Salil Choudhury became hits. Salil Choudhury worked with Dey from 1953 to 1992 in Hindi films and made Dey sing even in Bengali and Malayalam films right from the late 1950s to early 1990s. His association with Shankar–Jaikishan and producer Raj Kapoor had begun while working for Awara, but their combination became famous while working together for Boot Polish in 1954. The trio worked in many films together from 1954 to 1971 whose musical scores were appreciated, irrespective of their box-office fate, like Shree 420, Chori Chori, Mera Naam Joker, Awaara, and Kal Aaj Aur Kal. He also sang for Raj Kapoor in Parvarish, Sriman Satyavadi (both with music by Dattaram), Dil Hi To Hai (music by Roshan), and Abdullah (music by R.D. Burman). The Raj Kapoor-Manna Dey combination produced superhits (both music and film, the only exception being Mera Naam Joker where the songs were chartbusters but the film was a flop) and was a pair to reckon with. While Mukesh sang the slow pathos for Raj Kapoor, Dey sang the fast peppy ones, the classical numbers, the romantic duets (in case one analyses Dey has sung more than 95% of Raj Kapoor's superhit duets) and the naughty numbers. Dey has the rare distinction of doing playback for both father and son – Raj Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor (In fact Dey later sang for Rishi Kapoor in Zamane ko dikhana hai). C. Ramchandra worked with Dey very first time in Insaniyaat in 1955 and then recorded songs with Dey consistently even in the 1960s in films like – Tallaq (1959), Navrang, Paigham, Stree (1961), Veer Bhimsen etc.

The popular duets of Geeta Dutt-Dey include both classical songs as well as those which have style of Twist dance, Rock & Roll, cha-cha-cha like "Aan aan milo" from Devdas, :O Mister Suno Ek Baat" from Agra Road (1957), "Karo Na Phere Gali Ke Mere" from Bengali film Gali Theke Rajpath (1959) composed by Sudhin Dasgupta, "Naya Naya Chand Hai Jee" Khuda Ka Banda (1957) starring actor Chandrashekar and composed by S.N.Tripati. The song "Picnic Me Tick Tick" from Piya Milan Ki Aas (1961) composed by S.N.Tripati is noted for Dey yodeling and singing in a style which is known as forte of Kishore. With Lata Mangeshkar, Day recorded around 103 Hindi duets of which songs like "Tere Bina Aag Yeh Chandni" from Awara, "Yeh raat bhigi bhigi" and "Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Mein" from Chori Chori, "Pyar hua iqrar hua" from Shree 420, "Woh Chand Muskaye" from Akhri Dao (1958), "Ritu aye", "Dil Ki Girah Khol Do" from Raat Aur Din (1966), "Aya Abdulla Aya" from Juaari (1968), "Soch Ke Ye Gagan Jhume" from the flop film Jyoti (1969)
