If you want to talk of Bengali literature, one must start with Rabindranath Tagore, who has even crossed the periphery of our nation to glorify India in the realm of the world with his majestic artistic literary genius. Westerners were initially enamored of these songs for their peaceful, mystical qualities, which contrasted sharply with a world on the verge of a harsh global war. These songs also accentuate the idea of unity, highlighting Tagore's lifelong goal to unite Eastern and Western traditions, which was a heavy task at the time in British-controlled India. The music created by Rabindranath Tagore is unique by style, form and class

There are differences of opinion about the number of songs composed by Tagore. As far as possible, research has been carried out and it revealed that he composed more than 2000 original songs. If these are classified ,as given below, according to the Hindustani classical raga/ragini orthe type,we may have some idea about the depth of his talent:1.Bhairavi—268. 2Yaman—147---3.Piloo—143 ----4.Khamaj—142--5.Bihag—138--6.Bhairav that(other than Kalingada)—118--7.Kalingada—57--8.Kafi—19 9.Desh—96----10.Kedara—69 11.Malhar—69--12.Bahar—54 ---13.Chayanat—47--14.Sahana—47 ---15.Asavari—36--16.Baul—187---17.Kirtan—151(Source:Google)

Rabindranath Tagore's highly acclaimed song Madhuro Dhwani Baaje is based on Raag Yaman Kalyan.

Have you ever witnessed someone's heart melt and run like a honey river? Ever envision a raindrop singing before it becomes part of the ocean?

Or have you ever considered what might happen if a starry sky suddenly appeared in front of you and began to dance before your eyes?

If not, you'll understand what I was trying to say when you listen to this song.smiley1

This Malkauns is one of the major ragas in classical music.Raag Malkauns is often said to evoke a state of severe tranquility. The raga is believed to have been created by goddess Parvati to calm lord Shiva, when he was outraged and refused to calm down after Tandav in rage of Sati's sacrifice.

Mr. BrhannadaArmour shared this song in a TOTW thread a few days ago. I still listen to this wonderful song every day, and I'm sure I'll play it daily for the rest of my life. I heard it for the first time, and I am thankful to him for sharing it in this forum. It will be exceptionally rare that we get to hear a song of this caliber, emotionally and melodically rendered.

In Carnatic music, this raga is known as Hindolam and there are a number of wonderful Keerthans by eminent composers in this raga. This raga ranks among the favorites of leading musicians, and many top artists like Lalgudi Jayaraman, Balamurali Krishna, L.Subramaniam, Amjad Ali Khan, and other great exponents have presented brilliant jugal bandhi type of recitals, since this raga occupies a prominent place in both Carnatic and Hindustani genres of music.

Singer :Lata Mangeshkar

In the movie Narthansala, P Suseela sings this song in a similar scenario to entice Keechak to Narthansala so that Bheem, who is waiting for him, will kill him.

Madhuri I have sung this Raga and given a performance of the same, one day on the occasion of Ramnavami. It was a beautiful experience to sing Malkauns. I feel that this Raga takes me close Shri Ram

The use of Madhyam Swar is so beautiful in this Raga and it holds a unique elegance. Its a serious yet a meditative Raga for me.
