Aishwarya Rai: Provoked to hit Indian screens in 3 languages

Aishwarya Rai starrer Provoked is all set for a world wide release after receiving rave reviews for its volatile and relevant content in the Cannes film festival. The film will also be dubbed in three Indian languages for Indian audiences. Producer J Murli Manohar told IANS: "Since the theme of domestic violence is as relevant in the West as in a remote village of Punjab or Bihar or Tamil Nadu, we'd like 'Provoked' to go into places that are ideally not seen as commercially viable for English language films. We therefore plan to dub 'Provoked' into Tamil, Telugu and Hindi."
'Provoked' in its three Indian versions will have a background score completely separate and far more dramatic than the original English version. A.R. Rahman, who will compose the music, said: "I don't think this has ever been done before. But when Jagmohan Mundhra (director of 'Provoked') and I got together for the background score in 'Provoked', we felt it was too underplayed for the Indian market. "Here, we like the music to emphasize every scene. We spoke about it, and I got another background score ready for the Indian market. It is more in keeping with the mood required in our cinema," added Rahman. 'Provoked' is the harrowing real life tale of a lady named Kiranjeet Ahluwalia, who unable to bear the brutality and repeated rapes by her alcoholic husband, kills him unintentionally by setting him to fire. Aishwarya Rai plays the role of the protagonist in the film. The film also starrs Naveen Andrews, Miranda Richardson, Robbie Coltrane, Nandita Das and Steve McFadden in pivotal roles. The film is expected to hit Indian screens in August.

Film Composer A.R. Rahman Selects Bag End Bass Speakers

Jun 7, 2006 3:24 PMOne of India's foremost film composers and musical film directors, A. R. Rahman, recently opened a new 3,000 square-foot recording studio in Chennai, India renamed A.M. Studios (pictured). The facility, formerly known as Panchathan Record Inn, took nearly three years to complete. Acoustic design and architectural plans for the studios were conceived by Studio 440 Architecture & Acoustics in Hollywood, Calif. Sound Wizard Audio Design and Consultancy of Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India, provided project management and acoustical consulting. Equipment for the studios was specified and supplied by Daxco Digital of Singapore. A local architectural and construction firm in Chennai did the construction work. A.M. Studios' two main spaces are a 380-square-foot control room and the 1,300-square-foot recording studio/mixing stage. The recording studio offers flexibility for music recording and film mixing, thanks to variable acoustics. The control room features a large bay window offering full view of the big screen in the mix stage. The recording area, which doubles as a mix stage, can accommodate up to 30 musicians for large recordings. There are also two additional isolation booths with large glass sliding doors. The bass system in the recording studio/mixing stage is comprised of four self-powered Bag End INFRAsub-18 PRO subwoofer systems, specified by Daxco Digital. The INFRAsub-18 PRO offers enhanced control abilities for professional surround applications. It is powered by Bag End's INFRA internal 400-watt amplifier and controlled by the company's exclusive dual integrator, which is also internal. Currently, Rahman, along with the Finnish folk music band Vrttin, is composing the score for the $27 million musical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's acclaimed trilogy, Lord of the Rings , scheduled to make its world premiere in Toronto in early 2007.

Sivaji Productions' Hindi venture

Sivaji Productions, the production house of late Sivaji Ganesan and his family, has signed up ace director Rajkumar Santoshi and music director A R Rahman for a forthcoming Hindi film.

Ramkumar, director of Sivaji Productions and son of Sivaji Ganesan, told Chennaionline that the movie would be a blockbuster, with a likely investment of Rs 15-20 crore. The star cast for the film is currently under negotiation, he said, adding that the film was tentatively titled 'Toofan Mail', though no final decision had yet been taken on the title. "The script is getting ready," he said."This will be a modern subject; definitely not a period film like Devadas," says Ramkumar with a don't-ask-me-for-details smile. "The cast would be finalised by July and the film would go on the floors from December or January 2007," he said. Meanwhile, work had commenced on another another Hindi film, 'Delhiiheights' - you can even call it Delhiites, says Ramkumar. This will be a breezy film, reminiscent of the Basu Chatterji-Hrishikesh Mukherjee pattern, of a young couple in Delhi, who go through a difficult period, some misunderstanding but ultimately everything turns out well for them. This film is under production and is slated for a Deepavali release this October. The cast consists of Jimmy Shergill, Neha Dhupia, Om Puri, Rohit Roy, Simone Singh, Vivek Shauq and Kamini Khanna. Direction is by Anand Kumar, screenplay and dialogue by Sanyukta Chawla."The exciting part of the movie is the music by Rabbi Shergill, who will provide a mix of Punjabi/Sufi music. This is his first movie but he has already created waves with his private albums. He is especially popular for his Punjabi numbers in the albums and there are rave reviews about his live performances including in Pakistan," says Ramkumar. "Three songs have already been recorded while we will have another two or three songs. In all, we will have two Punjabi numbers and three or four in Hindi," Ramkumar said.

I love what Rahman does with film music

Shridevi Keshavan
Friday, June 23, 2006 22:40 IST Percussionist Talvin Singh talks about his upcoming albums, Bollywood and turning recluse He's been a recluse for quite a few years now. "I took a sabbatical when I started seeing my face in every magazine," says Talvin Singh, international percussionist and DJ who has introduced a signature mix of Eastern and Western music. "I've been doing a lot of work in the last two years. I was deejaying extensively, working on a collaborative album called 'Songs of the inner world' and then there was also the big production — English national opera," he adds. After working with international artistes such as Madonna and Bjork, Talvin is now looking forward to his next two albums slotted for release this year. "The album (yet untitled) is more song-based and also in such as like Bengali and Punjabi," explains Talvin. The musician, who was a guest on a show on Radiocity in Mumbai, passionately talks about his work on Deepa Mehta's 'Republic of Love'. "It's a Canadian film with no Indian landscape and no Indian star cast, but the music is completely Indian. It's an interesting juxtaposition of bhaav and raag," he says. Quiz him about his interest in Bollywood and he does not want to reveal too much about a few projects that are still being finalised. "My choice of Bollywood melody is electrifying beats, grace and 'bhaav'. I love what AR Rahman does with film music," he says. The mention of his avant-garde club 'Anokha' in London, which spurted young Brit-Asian artistes like DJ Bobby-Nihal, Jay Sean and Rishi Rich, makes him nostalgic. "At one show, DJ Nihal actually said, 'I wouldn't be on stage if not for this man'. It's great to get that kind of acknowledgement," he says. Talvin has mellowed down. He also confesses to having an empty space in his life for a special person. "It's beautiful to have someone to share everything with," he ends. k_shridevi@dnaindia.net
