Himesh, soon at a screen near you

London: We've heard a lot of Himesh Reshammiya, composer and singer. Now get prepared to see him—on screen.
At Reshammiya's first international concert at Wembley Park on Sunday, the singer announced that he was doing a film, to "clear all the controversies'' around him. Controversies? "I am asked why I am so serious. Why I don't smile. And why the heroines in my music videos keep running away from me. All these questions will be answered through my film.'' Get set for the deep revelation then.
Reshammiya's second announcement—about a music school—is his "payback'' to the film industry "which has given me a lot''. "I am doing that by introducing new talent to the industry,'' he declared. But when it was pointed out that A R Rahman, who has a music school in Bangalore, has not gained any publicity out of it, Reshammiya tersely replied, "For me, the music school is a business proposition so I need to do it.''
Reshammiya will now do only two films a year because he believes expectations of him are "sky-high'' and he thus needs to concentrate on quality.
As for criticism of his nasal singing and alleged arrogance, he says his shyness has been mistaken for arrogance, and his statements misinterpreted by the media.
"I know that when people hear about my film, they will call me mad. All I'd like to tell them is: I haven't come to the film industry to make a fool of myself.''
"The success of the concert is an answer to all my detractors,'' he signs off triumphantly.

Japanese sushi. Any place that serves the best sushi is the hottest place to eat. In terms of sheer cuisine, I love anything that's hot!

(laughs) Now that you've got me thinking… There have been so many! Let me think which one was the hottest. Well, this was in Goa. Arbaaz had actually blindfolded me and taken me to this beautiful yacht in the middle of the sea and we were marooned there for three days.

My sister-in-law Seema Khan's clothes. They are fabulous. In the same breath, I'd also say the Evian water I drink, the 'Streax' in my hair, the Oriflame products I apply, the Fly phones I endorse… (laughs) And if you still want to know more, search Yahoo… It doesn't get cheesier than this, does it?

I hate pick-up lines. It's a lot better if the guy walks up to me, and says what he has to directly, rather than push his luck with cheesy pick-up lines.

The jhalak of a heady mix

Bangalore: He came, he sang, he conquered the surging, drenched crowd and got them asking for more. It was the Himesh Reshammiya nite at Palace Grounds last Saturday under the drizzling sky. The man with his signature style school-boy cap and nasal vocals, wowed audiences of all ages and hues. Yes, there was a sprinkling of foreign tourists too, foot-tapping and headbanging to the Hindi pop medley being belted out and proved that music knows no geographical boundaries.
As the stage came alive with the singer's video film Naam Hai Tera, Himesh made a sudden appearance and connected instantly with the audience with his announcement, "I promise to turn this place into a nightclub." He sang the immensely trendy Zara jhoom jhoom and got them gyrating to the dance steps in the movie. He introduced his three proteges Vineet Kumar, Himani Kapoor and Ujjaini, the winners of a popular television reality show for which he was one of the judges. The popular folksy number Odhni, odh ke nachu from Tere Naam was sung by Himani while Vineet did justice to the trail-blazing solo Soniye which has almost each line sung in different tunes. I love you, Sayoni was accompanied by his platitudes on the lessons of love for today's youth.
Whenever Himesh lifted his head and the mike to a 45-degree angle, the audience knew he was going to sing.
Hate him or love him, one can't just ignore him. Thirteenyear old Anisah Britton of British descent now living in Goa, gushed, "Himesh is a rage in Goa too and my friends and I love all his songs. His voice is very different and we like his music because it is not typically Indian or entirely Western. I particularly like Aashiq banaya, Samjho Na and Jhalak Dikhla Ja."
Vipul Bangard and Rameez Khan, dental interns from M S Ramaiah College, call him a trend-setter because of the originality of his compositions.
"We also wanted to check out whether his voice in his songs is natural or electronically-generated," they said.
Himesh rounded off the cool night with his most hummable and most downloaded chart-buster Jhalak Dikhla Ja.

Politics & Palash!

PALASH spoke to us about Himesh Reshammiya and ghar ka khana. The first principle from his code of conduct is, "It is necessary
to laugh at yourself. One should not take too much tension in life. But, it's also important to take one's work seriously." He said that Himesh Reshammiya was his favourite primarily for the 'extra' attitude that he has. "I appreciate the way he sings. People say that he cannot sing but look at him, he has come a long way," said he. Palash thrives on home made food. "I love dalchawal, zeera aaloo and basically I gorge on homemade grub," he expressed. The orthopaedic surgeon has come a long way as a singer. It's surprising then that he never wanted to take it up as a profession. "I never wanted to be a singer. Another thing that I never want to be is a politician. Politics and Palash are poles apart!" he grinned.
