Hi...T.
Here are my questions...
# Is the piano a string instrument or a percussion instrument?
I personally think its a combination of both string and percussion (as you hit strings with hammers). But, it also depends on different systems of classification.
For instance, the hyperpiano style Vishesh just explained would make it a string instrument.
#Why does the piano have 88 keys?
Each key is for a specific sound frequency. We dont have more keys because
1) the average human arms wont be able to reach them if you go over more than 7 octaves.
2) if you play the lowest and highest notes in an 88 key piano, you'll notice they sound very clunky - like something being dropped, not musical. Imagine if you go lower or higher! π€’
#How many strings does a piano have?
I assume there are 88 strings for 88 keys and 88 sounds.
# What do the pedals do and how do they work?
I've given a complete explanation on pedals in the first page, 3rd question by heart girl π
#Is a "new" piano always better than a "used" piano?
I feel a new piano is better as you dont get more problems with it. But, if you're running on a budget, you can also find a few good used pianos - you will just need to hunt more and see if it is properly tuned or not.
#Should I buy a spinet piano to save space?
Actually, spinets are good to save space, but they dont sound as good (very poor sense of touch with the keys and short strings) + repair is very difficult for Piano technicians.
I personally feel its still better to buy an Electric keyboard with 88 keys (like Yamaha Clavinova) than a spinet. Keyboards dont occupy so much space either and second hand ones are fairly good - not so much maintainance probs.
Thanks
