Why is it that the award winning films have to (mostly) depict suffering and sorrow with stories ridden with pain .... having all possible shades of black & gray ??????

The more graphic the depiction of suffering the more it is hailed .....

When was the last time ..... a happy / colorful / feel good movie won at the oscars ??? ...... the only thing that comes to mind is "Sound of Music" ........ ( I may be wrong here .... haven't followed the last couple of Oscars closely )

Honestly ..... is a Happy movie in any way lesser than a movie depicting 'reality' suffering and pain ???

And by happy .... I dont mean just the candy floss kind .....

Weren't Chak de & Iqbal wonderful movies ????? So also Dor & Khosla ka Ghosla .....

Cant think of any Hollywood ones right now .......

What do you think .... friends ????

I am happy for A.R Rahman, Gulzar and Pookutty. The movie success does not count much for me... it's a British production. 😃😊

i must say.. i loved the movie..though at times especially towards the end they dragged it AB senior definitely wasnt needed....but the story was really good, the music was great and sonam kapoor rocked...as par TB delhi 6 is doing well so am glad............

the oscars tend to go to the grimmest movies around...and the best acting awards also normally go to those who acted in these movies....the academy preferences and those of the public seem to differ alot...... i mean Charlize theron won a best acting oscar for Monster...how many people had seen or even heard of the movie before she won it.........and how many had seen it afterwards??? i seriously wish that johnny depp had won for the Pirates of the Carribean 1 or Meryl Streep for the Devil Wears Prada....they were both brilliant but i suppose the movies were not serious enough by oscar standards
the big winners are normally big sufferers.....Juno bucked the trend last year by getting nominted for best movie l though i doubt anyone expected it to win and it didnt......i think the last time oscars went to a movie that was a huge commercial as well as critical success was LOTR 3....and before that Titanic

Slumdog............its a good movie but i was truly surprised by its success......i dont think it deserved an oscar...the ones for music and technical sides...well fine i agree with those but best film? best director???
i guess what worked for them was the fact that the setting and the story was both indian........people were intrigued by it because it showed a side of both the world and of cinema that these academy walas hadnt seen....i mean i know its a britsh film but at times it felt like a typical bollywood masala....especialy the love story....the feel good factor is also there with the whole rags -to-riches thing....it really did a feel like a typical bollywood fare at times ....i suppose the fascination with the East worked for the film..

btw for those who have seen the film...what was your reaction to "jai ho" at the end of the movie? to me the dancing was so the chreography was pathetic there maybe because the actors didnt know how to dance but they still could have done it in a better manner...at least thats wha i felt

Well we do have another 2-3 weeks at least before we are shooed out of the MRD forum .....
