The Storm that Passed
Crrr...raaaccckkk!!!!! The loud thunder ripped through the darkness, crashed as if just outside the window. She closed her eyes tighter, if that was possible, and clutched the satin sheet covering in a fierce grip closer to her heart. She hated this. She loved the rain. The pitter-patter of the raindrops on her window seemed like music to her ears. But tonight, the sound of rain falling on the glass panes, seemed to thud on her eardrums, like messages from far below the earth, where her darkest fears lived. Those fears, which she had managed to brush aside to the farthest corners of her heart after much difficulty. Today, those fears seemed to come alive in front of her, haunting her soul, torturing her to the core. She closed her eyes even tighter, in a frail hope that the thunders will stop. It was just a frail hope. The thunder didn't stop.
The loud sound of the thunder fell on her ears like the sound of a cracking whip, as if someone was lashing out to her in extreme rage. It seemed as if she was being punished for who she was, just the way that black leather belt used to crash-land on her little being for almost every small issue, whether or not it was her fault. The dark monster haunted her, followed her every night, when she would lie in a corner, confined to herself, hugging the air. The cold ground would sooth her burning wounds, for there would be no one else, nothing else. In the mornings the door would open, and he would come again. He would hug her and say that he loved her, and that is why he kept her in that confinement so that no one could take her away. Dhruv, he claimed to love her, but his was not love. It was an obsession, a dark madness that overpowered his senses when she cried for freedom. When she would demand to go back to her life, her friends, her family, when she would cry for the man she loved, he would again throw her back to the darkness, leaving her to the cold walls again to sooth the fresh scars. Everything seemed to come back to her tonight.
Another loud thunder lashed in vengeance, and a tremor passed through her. She had tried to forget those dark nights, but they were too dark to be forgotten. She shivered and tried snuggling more inside that satin sheet, when a muscular arm snaked around her waist and pulled her lightly, her back collided with a strong yet soft and warm surface. She turned in his hold, and faced him. His closed eyes and the rhythmic up and down of his chest suggested he was sleeping. She kept looking at him, his calm and serene face gave her an odd kind of peace, until another thunder crashed outside. He pulled her closer in his sleep, his strong arms on her back, holding her protectively. She rested her head in the crook of his neck; they have always been a perfect fit. His lips lightly pecked on her forehead, and he whispered "I love you Nupur." The mighty thunderstorm ravaged life outside the closed windows, but inside her heart, that sound of the whisper overpowered the evil darkness. She slightly tilted her head and looked up to his face, but his eyes were still closed. She smiled inwardly, she knew him too well to fall for his pretending. She kissed his cheek lightly and smiling, she snuggled more into his broad chest, "I love you Mayank." He smiled at her, because he knew that she knew. Wrapping her in his arms, he rested his chin over her head and closed his eyes. Their hearts beating together, she drifted off to a peaceful slumber that she had been waiting for since a long time now. The monstrous thunder lashed outside the window, again and again and again, but his deathly rage went in vain, for she knew he could never harm her again. He could never ever harm her in any way again. She was safe. In those arms, she was safe.
