The reason we have jails, a justice system, courts, laws etc. is so that we can maintain order in our society. So tha people don't go around harming others or causing them pain. When somebody commits a crime they are punished so they can learn what they did was wrong and then better themselves to not commit that crime again and become a better citizen. Has Sanjay dutt not done that? In the last 12 years has he not gotten his life back on track. After coming out of Jail, he could have let his life go and just become a burden to society. But instead he fought back, re-gained his career and did well for himself. He committed the crime, he realized his mistake and in many ways paid for it, as it is not being easy having the word... terrorist with a big question mark hanging over your head, celebrity or not. What is the point of sending him to Jail? Why lock him up, when the law, could use him in a much better and productive way, where everyone benefits, through community service and all that. Going to Jail is not always the Solution!

As for the families of the people who passed away. I sincerely feel for them. But putting Sanjay Dutt in Jail will not bring back their loved ones. However, if Sanjay dutt who has a major fan-following and can have an impact on people was asked to go speak to the youth. Tell them how difficult life is in Jail (since he has experienced it first hand), talk to them about staying away from drugs, about how you can get ur life back on track despite having many set-backs in life, how never to lose hope and keep going to become a better person. Maybe he could save another mis-lead teen or youth from becoming a terrorist, or using drugs, or picking up a weapon on themselves or against another. He could save a life in the way... I am sure that a mother who might have lost her son in the bomb blast would rather see another son saved then Sanjay dutt sitting in Jail.

Very well said. I don't think we even have something called community service in the Indian judiciary system. And in that way it is really bad.

agree with Sfan. hell there are so many criminals everywhere, what abt them? there are also so many POLITICIANS who secretly do criminal acts. yes thats true. I dont want to mention names. but there are. just because their criminal acts they do it so secretly they can never be regarded as criminals.

Sanjay Dutt, is one of the few actors, who surrendered himself to the Indian Judiciary even when he was in Mauritus in 1994-5? Thats called sincereity. Inshallah I pray he doesnt has to live in jail for more long.
Ameen!

Sanjay Dutt enters jail, his lawyers head to SC

Mumbai: Actor Sanjay Dutt was sent to Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail on Tuesday afternoon after he was sentenced to six years' rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

This is the same prison where Dutt had been held in 1993 and also the venue for the trial of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Dutt bade an emotional farewell to sisters Namrata and Priya before being taken to jail by the police. He has not asked for home food in the jail, but he has been granted other facilities that he is entitled to.

"Dutt has sought only what he is entitled to and has got them. We have not sought home food," his lawyer Satish Maneshinde said.

Dutt's lawyers have, meanwhile, geared up to challenge the special TADA court verdict in the Supreme Court. "We will appeal against the TADA court judge sentencing him to six years' rigorous imprisonment," Maneshinde said.

"We have taken the judgement (of the TADA court) with a heavy heart. We will appeal against the order in the Supreme Court," Maneshinde told journalists after his client was taken to into police custody.

Maneshinde, however, said Dutt was not shocked by the judgement. "The actor was prepared for the judgement — either probation or a jail term between five and 10 years. He was not shocked and he has accepted it with heavy heart," Maneshinde said.

In the court, Dutt however looked grave when the judge said he and fellow convicts Yusuf Nalwalla and Kersi Adjania would not get the benefit of the Probation of Offenders Act (POA).

The star told the court that he had felt his sentence would be waived under the POA. Since this had not happened, he said he wanted time to make certain arrangements before he was sent to jail. "You (Kode) are more than family for all of us," he said.

However, Kode said it was not a personal matter and he was only doing his duty to uphold the law.

"I have seen you in the last 10 years and exempted you by giving concessions in all matters. You have utilised the time to the best and shot for movies, doing remarkably well in the film line. Don't be sentimental, be calm and quiet," Kode remarked.

Dutt did not sit alone after his sentence was announced and stayed with co-accused Nalwalla and others, even smiling occasionally.

On his way out of the courtroom, he pleaded with the judge to ask policemen not to surround him too closely, and Kode obliged.

In a graceful gesture, Dutt also shook hands with Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who had strongly opposed his application under the POA, and said, "Thank you, sir."

Kode allowed the star to meet family members and close friends and to speak to his daughter Trishala, who lives in the US, before being taken to a cell in Arthur Road Jail.

To a question about security for Dutt, Maneshinde said security was the concern of the state government and he hoped it would be taken care of.

To another question whether the celebrity status has affected Dutt, the counsel said there was no pressure on this score and there was no weightage given to it. "Celebrity status does not work in courts," he added.

Whats the matter with you guys? It was a serious blast & he had a part to play in it. 13 blasts & all the people affected... is a that so insignificant for you? Just because he is a famous actor. That is sick. Is this what your opinion will be if somebody you knew was affected?
