Chapter 2
Earlier that day:
The day began like every other day for Raghav Rao, him tossing and turning on his bed. Sleep was difficult to come by when guilt continued to consume your very soul. It was the same nightmare it always was, he could still hear Keerti's screams, vividly picture her as she screamed, "Rāghav nuṇḍi pāripōṇḍi, ī narakaṁ nuṇḍi tappin̄cukōṇḍi". His sister had sacrificed herself for him.
Like it was yesterday, he could still feel those sensations: his feet had become lead. He tried to move, but his feet felt like they weighed five hundred pounds each. A woman ran past him—and he remembered thinking, “How is she running?” It felt like gravity had glued him to the road.
"Anna!" Farhad's raucous voice broke the chain of his thoughts.
"Itna subah subah kyu chilla raha hai Farhad?"
"Anna, there has been a security breach in the building"
Farhad handed over the tablet containing the security footage to Anna. He had prepared himself for the fit of rage that his boss was about to throw, but it knocked off Farhad's socks to see his Anna smiling. Why was he smiling? The implications of this were going to be huge if it ever got outside of this room. The trust that they had painstakingly build over the years would be deeply affected and so would their position in Hyderabad.
As Farhad started to explain his very valid concerns to his boss. Raghav was already off the bed with a barely-there smirk on his lips. His carefully laid web had finally caught its prey. He's had enough of this cat and mouse game it was showtime now.
Not wasting any more time Raghav got in the shower. Outside of the bathroom, a very perplexed Farhad, who thought this to be another one of his Annas eccentric behavior, left.
Raghav Rao was a man of immense patience. After all, he had bullheadedly waited for eight years to extract his revenge on every one of those cowards who had been responsible for the fate his sister had suffered.
Not wanting to return to the dark lane his thoughts had taken, he rushed out, finishing his shower in record time. He was eager to meet her. She was grossly mistaken if she thought a mere disguise would stop him from recognizing her. He had spent countless days and nights thinking nay dreaming of her, but being the man who he was he needed to be sure.
When playing the biggest gamble of his life yet, that had the stakes as high as they could get, it was of utmost importance that he knew each of her weaknesses. Her family and her Shop.
Raghav had immediately grasped that DSE was where he would start. He had studied her accounts and concluded that although she was trying her very best to make the shop as famous as it once was, they needed a good business strategy and some cash inflow to sustain and produce newer designs that would attract a young buyer.
But he needed something that would bring Pallavi to him, that was when he inquired about the land where her shop was, and unsurprisingly it was on sale.
Convincing Jagdish, the landlord, was easy. A few lakhs dangled in front of him and he forgot his contract with the Deshmukh's. The shop was a family heritage passed down generation after generation. If Pallavi even sniffed that he was planning to oust them, she would let go of the societal concerns and rush to do damage control.
Turns out he was right, she did let go of her inhibitions and come to him. But to think she would dare and steal his information to gain an equal footing in the negotiation was something he hadn't expected. So she was smart and brave and bloody stupid.
Her unprecedented step didn't change his plan but some tweaking would be necessary. Walking towards the elevator, he smiled. When he would be done with her, Pallavi Deshmukh wouldn't know what hit her.
Present:
"Stop", one word, and her feet rooted to the spot putting an abrupt end to her efforts of escaping his wrath. She turned around to face him, with a single finger raised towards her. He called her near him. She obliged.
"Pallavi", came the silky croon of his voice next.
"Raghav"
Obsidian eyes studied her with deliberate sensuality. He stalked forward with lips curved, like the king of all predators.
"You made the wrong choice"
"I am not here to indulge in games". Pallavi gazed around her, body alert, poised to flee at the merest hint of danger. The truth was she was in danger the moment he set his sights on her.
"No?", he mocked. "Why then, Pallavi, did you come here for?"
He rolled her name in his mouth, caressing each syllable until it sounded downright erotic. Taking pleasure in the mirage of expressions that flicked through her face, he circled around her lazily.
She turned to face him. After all one should never show their back to the devil.
"Stop it", she demanded.
"Why?"
Why? Is he drunk this early in the morning?!
"It's impolite"
Raghav smiled looking down at her, his teeth glinting in the dim lighting of the room. Looking into his dark eyes, which seemed to flare whenever their skins brushed, Pallavi steeled herself, for the purpose she risked everything for, negotiation.
Like in all negotiations, one needs to establish a position of power. This man was used to people stumbling in fear around him. He was used to submission, and Pallavi wouldn't accomplish anything if she proved to be easy prey. Hence the data theft, otherwise the meeting would have ended even before it really began.
"I want you to return my land", her voice came out surprisingly confident.
"Ah, your saree ka dukaan"
She nodded. "Yes, I'll pay you the price"
He gave her a contemptuous look, "If I don't agree?"
"I'll release the list of your suppliers, to the police"
He laughed, rich and dark. The sound echoing in the room, making her feel small and trapped.
"I am serious! If you don't return my land, I'll go to the police station and you would end up in a cell"
His laughter faded, he shook his head slowly and with the speed of lightning, he gripped the back of her neck firmly, sending a sensational mix of pleasure and pain down to her core.
"I wonder how your Aai would feel about your transgressions, dressing up as a man, encroaching on my property, stealing from me, and kissing me all in the same day."
All this time she believed her power was significant, that her small victory gave her an edge over him. A novice mistake. The laws of the land bend with alarming ease to serve Raghav Rao. One hand gripping her neck and the other lightly caressing her jaw he said, "Try threatening me again, and I'll crush your shop right under your nose".
