What's wrong with Devyani is the same as what's wrong with a large number of women in civilized societies. For the sake of preserving appearances, observing the proprieties, safeguarding the family's image, they keep silent about horrendous violations of basic human rights. Or they only speak out after prolonged abuse. Devyani, Uttara, Vidya, these are not ideal or perfect characters, largeer than life heroines, they act the way millions of women actually do. If Priya is about to speak out boldly, that's something very few women do, even educated ones. Centuries of social conditioning teach most of them to keep quiet.

Aditi agree with devyani's behaviour is not understood. but in this type of case, mostly........ppl try to hide this matter.& try to pretend everything is normal. devyani is typical indian woman, who knows everything is wrong, but she refuse to see..........

in this type of case mostly women bare this violence silently & their relatives also try to hide.whether they r men Or women , for saving so called respect in their society........i m not surprised.....

That's the only reason I can think of right now-she's habituated to all the violence and bad treatment and doesn't think that its unusual, and that the woman must "win" over her husband to change things. But still, her attitude really irritates me, like Gauri said, even a blind person can see that her sister is suffering a lot. I hope Deyani changes her attitude and helps Uttara out b/f its too late. :S

Sudha, this serial appears to me to be a more honest serial. So, I expect less of drama (like for example she has some strange reasons to be silent etc.) Even from the previous scene of Devyani and Uttara this was evident. It was a great scene for me as it depicted the way one woman was kind of trying to fight her situation while the other woman was trying to be blind to it, thinking that this is the best. Here itself the creatives have shown the difference in the attitude of the two woman. But interestingly both are fighters. One wants to fight the system while the other wants to be in the system and fight using the loopholes of the system.

Uttara has a revolting nature but not stil quite there while Devyani thinks silence is the weapon. But if you see Devyani also forces the people (for example Dadaji) staying within the norms that she feels are the norms in which Maryada is maintained. She does quite some things on her own, assuming them to be the best solutions to maintain Maryada and still achieve her goals. She does act. While Uttara has a revolting nature, but she revolts in a very small way: at maximum she could run away from her house without her husband's knowledge or she will make the women drink alcohol and enjoy, but that is not sufficient. I think that is where Priya will fit in: She will show Devyani that there have to be new approaches when the situaiton goes out of control and she will give Uttara the strength to revolt better.

i reckon u know how beti ka sassural mein dahakal nahi dena chaiya bas chup kadaa rehna chaiya...well that's exactly wat devyani was doing. she might know that utara wants her husbands luv and that's y she didn't say anything to so things don't go worse.

Thanks for all the perspectives guys. So basically what's holding Dveyani back is her social constraints, her social conditioning. That, and the fact that she wants the marriage to work, which again is due to her social conditioning. Lets hope Devyani and Uttara both realize that whatever be the reason, something as terrible as domestic violence should never be tolerated or condoned.
