Interesting point that came up from many members was this obnoxious "dokyavar padar" issue which seemed to upset the members.
I would ask a hypothetical question (I have asked this before) without relating it to any serial: What if a north indian girl married into a very orthodox Maharashtrian brahmin family and she refused to wear a mangalsutra on the ground that it is discriminating and not in her tradition. Would the girl be justified in insisting that her hubby walk out of the house with her as she does not agree to the family's insistence on her wearing a mangalsutra?
Curious to know the views on this.

For me the benchmark for serials is ELDG. I can't think of a negative point in this serial
The things that put me off in a prime time family serial:
1) Politicians getting involved in the story with ulterior motives (eg Honaar Suun, Tu Tithe Me)
2)Sadistic characters/wife beaters (Tambde Baba of TTM)
3)Pshycic cases (Kedar in Radha hi bawari)
4)Blackmailing with "ashlil" photos or some past story(TTM)
5)The "Other woman" hogging the limelight (JYRG, MNB, TTM, PAM)

Well Kamalji ..@ILC ..has already raised this point in the first post of the thread ..
A woman who is outgoing ,,modern In her views ..rebelling ,,is always depicted as a vamp,,
That is the biggest irony of our Indian telly world ..we all want to see a Sanskari ..adnyadharak woman,,
We r in the year 2017..just a few months away from 2018..but the Indian audience still has that mental block of a sarvagun sampanna bahu,,
KDP is a superb example for this..when Gauri put her foot down and said no matter what she wants to work,,the entire family including Shiv were against her decision,,they treated her as if usne Kaunsa bada paap Kiya hain,,and amma and that fufaji threw her out of the house,,,
M asking why can't women have all the fun,,y does she have to act all matured after marriage ,,,wear saris,,sindoor ,,and wot not and act as the caretaker of the house..while the husband is still busy playing maa Ka ladla ..
Would love to see an Indian version of desperate housewives or a bad moms on our screens,,

Infact m all game for a modern,,outgoing ..rebelling Bahu,,,

If this has to be a KDP bashing thread, so be it.
But let us not bash just for the sake of bashing.😃
We are always talking about presenting something realistic. Regressive practices are a part of life even today. How can they show in a serial that "progressive" ideas have changed the thinking of the people unless they show what the regressive practices are? Wouldn't it be better by judging if serial is progressive or regressive at the END of the story and not in between.
An example of this is the current track. Dadi (who used to throw a fit at the wearing of even punjabi dresses) is shown lovingly accepting her modern, outgoing, rebellious granddaughter with hair coloring and a dress with exposed shoulders who does not even bend down to touch elders' feet. If that is not progressive change I wonder what is.

Helloo everyone.. Posting after a long time here...
Nice thread ILC.. Agree with every point mentioned till now

With every serial why are these unachievable standards set for the bahus.. Majority of the janta watching these serials are housewives or women in general.. When they see these superwoman types of bahus.. sanskari, guni, respecting elders, wont go out of their words, gharala bandhun thevnari, saglyancha aikun ghenari, excellent cook, multitasker nd what not, maybe they expect this in real life too.. Sun asavi tar ashi.. Do these kinds of girls really exist in real life anymore 😕 - Flawless? Its high time they show FL with flaws and her sasar chi mansa accepting her the way she is.. kiti mhantla tari people do relate to these kinds of shows nd it influences their thinking somewhere...

Also more Aditya like male leads are needed to set examples... I don't follow KDP, but I remember watching somewhere that when Gauri wanted to do job, everyone was against her.. even Shiv.. I mean come on.. I dislike these kind of guys.. prem karaichi himmat aahe.. pan still cant face his family members for his better half.. nd that too for valid reasons...

JYRG would have been the perfect serial had they shown proper Pune track... where both the leads are equals.. chukat chukat.. dhadpadat shikat aahet to lead their life on their own terms... both having jobs..

I don't know why couples cant lead their life separately.. If DIL asks for a separate house she is considered a home breaker... Door rahun pan u can still remain close to ur family... jar mulgi ghar sodu shakte tar why not the guy... why does it become such a huge issue.. it needs to be highlighted as well..

Re KDP, I think the show lost its soul when they converted it into a saas-bahu format rather than clash of cultures. At the same time they gave more screen time to obnoxious characters like Phupya rather than building on well set characters like Mitu, Venu and for several episodes abandoning the Mumbai folks. Amma morphed into an evil witch from a misinformed overly possessive mother - I guess this lead to the loss of interest for several loyal fans.
Kamal Kaka, the dokyavar pader is more prevalent in North India households but I still see it consistently practiced in 99 Kuli well educated Maratha families in dakshin Maharashtra. But the core viewers for KDP (middle class families from metros) may not be aware of such practices and hence were definitely put-off by some of the cultural practices.
I was completely unaware that in North India girls are prohibited from touching the feet of elders. I only got to know of this custom once I moved out of India and mingled with North Indian families. Their usual dialogue when you approach the paya padne is "Aare beta humara yaha betiya pair nahi chuti.. sirf aise galle milati hain".
I would also like to clarify that the above is not KDP bashing but an attempt to evaluate the loss of interest by the core viewers.
Peace!

JYRG fell apart after introducing Chitra. They did some recovery during Pune track but hurriedly wound it up.

Agreed... Pune track had lot of potential, but lack the execution.

Currently I am not watching any Marathi serial, so wont be able to comment on them.
JYRG was the last serial tht I really watched and followed.
Its simplicity was its USP. and makes it rewatchable for me. The characters really grow on to you
