None of the characters is completely Dharmik or Completely Adharmic, even a few acts of Krishna are Adharma and few of Duryodhan are Dharma. This Dharma/Adharma is just a religious way of looking at it. Nor does the War anyway establish Dharma (Nagmedh)

Epic per say is about the journey of Yudhishtir as a person as a ruler and as a fighter, so how so much we might dislike he is the central character. In the absence of others the epic might have turned up differently, but in his absence there was no epic at all. His major companion/mentor is Draupadi and his rival is Duryodhan so they both are other central.
