I think there is not. Northern version is what we mostly read today. Southern one somehow lost its importance since no-one properly translated it.

FRIENDSHIP is like a tree.
It is not MEASURED on how TALL it could be,
but is on how DEEP the ROOTS have grown.

Happy friendship day to all karnalis and karnalas...and Karna too who gave a new meaning to friendship.

[No offence ,just clearing some doubts on Karna ]

I think Watcher & Sabhayata are in a better position to answer this. From what I understand, KMG is one of 4 or more translations of the MB that have been done. There are discrepancies b/w each account, which is why some historical scholars combed thru each of them & came up w/ a version of their own that deleted such conflicting accounts. This version is known as the Critical Edition (note that similar exercises were done by different people for Valmiki's Ramayana)

The reason KMG is cited in this forum is that it's the only one freely available online - you don't have to go to book stores hunting for it, as you do the others. That gives people the impression that it's the account officially endorsed by the DT. It's not. The only requirement from members is that whenever they put forth arguable assertions, that they back it up w/ a citation. It may be from KMG, or Bibek Debroy or any of the other versions, as long as it's presented. Advantage w/ KMG is that one can link to the original source, as opposed to just accepting what's been offered on a platter.

Incidentally, you are welcome to ask such questions. They are more relevant to the AT than some of the chats that were going on 😆

Update: I see that they've addressed it already. Thanks

The three important translations of Mahabharata are :- ( present today )

  1. Gita Press' Translation of Mahabharata (Hindi)
  2. KMG's translation(English)
  3. Critical Edition of Mahabharata translated by Bibek Debroy. ( 10 Volumes ) ( English)

While the first 2 translations are freely available, Bibek Debroys translation of the Critical Edition is not free

I request you to please guide yourself Here. Read the next post also, Both of the posts will tell you the journey of Mahabharata and how it came to the dominant form we have today.

In some versions Karna fails to string the bow ( At Draupadi's swayamvar ), in some versions he doesn't even participate and in some versions Draupadi rejects him.

Any idea what were the versions that Debroy used in coming up w/ the CE? One was KMG, and from what I understand, there were 3 others. Any idea?

Also, is Gita Press identical to KMG, aside from translation issues (not interpretation issues)?
