Death of Abhimanyu was necessary because of two reasons,
A)be it being son of moon in previous birth or being kalyavan or abhikasur it was sure he was destined to die in his 16th year or mahabharat war,coz as son of moon he promised to return in his 16th year or acc. To other point of view had he survived the war his demon tendency would have rised.
B)before this incident pandavas were fighting with less intensity, but after this incident,it enraged them beyond limit especially arjuna.

Abhimanyu died because it was his destiny . it was meant to be , of course Krishna being God could have saved him but would that have been fair to other warriors of both sides who died fulfilling their duties ? I guess not
There are many back stories with different reason of Abhi's short life span , the most widely accepted on is that he was the son of Soma the moon god and his name was Varjas , Being his son Varjas was dearer to Soma then his own life , when Krishna went to him to ask his son , Soma agreed to give him but only for Sixteen years , Only krishna knew that and so he never let Abhimanyu learn how to come out of chakraviuh .
Abhimanyu's death was suerly a turning point of Mahabharat , Kauravs broke every rule of the war to kill him , it was more like a murder then a fight between warriors , it served as a wake up call for Arjun that he is fighting against Adharmis and not his family . So an enraged Arjuna wreck the havoc and killed eight akshohinis out of eleven on the next day. Bheem killed Twenty five brothers of Duryodhan .

I do think that it was needless, however. On day 8, Arjun lost his son Iravana to Alambusha, and that too upset him. So it should have been enough to throw him into bloodlust mode, but it didn't. And Iravana wasn't slain in a fair fight either - Alambusha created an illusion of eagles attacking Iravana, who was a snake worshipping Naga, and taking advantage of that, Alambusha took a sword & cut off his head.

Arjun should therefore have done on day 9 what he did on day 14

one thing I don't understand is why this question arises? it was a war! ofcourse people will b killed. if we are talking abt saving why only abhimanyu why not other people should also b saved? though abhimanyu is my fav character after krishna and his death pains me alot but in a war people do die, irrespective of whether they are good or bad or innocent or young!

There are a number of warriors I'd have liked to see saved. From the Pandava side, not just Abhimanyu, but also Sveta, Uttar, Sankha, Satyaki's sons, Dhrishtadyumna's sons, Draupadi's sons, Iravana and Ghato baby.
From the Kaurava side, Karna's sons - Vrishasena, Prasena, Chitrasena, Sushena & Satyasena.

Oh, and I'd have liked Ashwi, Kripa & Kritavarma to have died in the war as well.

New, here.
Vrish, well said.

Also, Krishna, knew about everyone's deaths, but if he would have saved all then no one would have died.

It is important to remember that although God has the power to stop someone's death, he does not do it because a person's karma must play out. Intervening in the natural cycle of karma would disturb the whole universe, and Lord Krishna did not incarnate on Earth to disrupt karma. It was the Kauravas' karma that they had to kill Abhimanyu in such an unethical manner, because that gave the Pandavas an opportunity to kill them in an unethical manner as well. God gives human beings a chance not to commit sins, but he does not prevent them from committing sins because there is always an amount of free will that every human being has, and God does not intervene in it. If human beings use that free will to commit sins like the Kauravas did, then their bad karma eventually drowns them in pain and sorrow as well.

it is not the death of abhimanyu that is in question, it is how he died. he was surrounded and killed by a bunch of cowards who later on boasted about killing a 16 year old. no warrior deserves that type of death. a true warrior even in death needs to be respected and abhimanyu, despite of his age, totally deserves that respect by gaining a warrior's death which he did not get thanks to the cowards who killed him. moreover it was the start of breaking of rules made by bhishma. the way abhimanyu died was not war, it was pure murder.

John

He was disarmed by a bunch of cowards, but he wasn't killed that way. He was almost killed in a fair fight. He & Dushashan's son had a straightforward mace contest, where both got exhausted & fainted. However, the way he was finally killed was unfair: Dushashan's son recovered first, and w/o waiting for Abhimanyu himself to recover, he crashed his mace on Abhimanyu's head, killing him.
