Hello Everyone,
We all very well know that Mahabharat is the story of truth, dharma, sacrifices and sufferings.
We all know every character in Mahabharat suffered in one or the other way. Though a suffering is a suffering and there is no such thing like the biggest suffering. But we cannot deny the fact that biggest sufferers are there. We all know that some characters like Karna, Bhishma, Kunti, Gandhari, and of course Draupadi suffered a lot. Some of them were insulted, then others were criticized by the world, some lost their children, some lost their life, while others had to live in encasement of dharma or friendship or prans.

So here we are going to have a humble discussion that which Mahabharat character suffered the most. Since there are a lot of characters in Mahabhrat. We are going to discuss about particulars only. These are:
  • Karna : The great warrior whose mother abandoned him, he was a great warrior but was recognized as a "suta putra" by the world, though when he comes to know his true identity he never hesitated to fight for his friend who helped him.
  • Bhishma : For the pran he gave to his father this mighty warrior suffered all his life. When he wanted to fight for dharma his pran restricted him.
  • Kunti : She abandoned her child for the sake of her and her father's dignity. She was also criticized by the world for having kids with Gods.
  • Amba : the princess who lost her love first, and then her dignity. But the great woman never left hope and came back to take revenge.
  • Draupadi : Though she is one of the most controversial characters of the great epic. But no one can deny the fact that she suffered whether it was for having multiple husbands, was tried to be disrobed in court, and had go for exile.
So everyone which character do you think suffered the most. Please keep your views and don't compare.😊

For me, it is Draupadi and Bhishm.

Draupadi bcoz, she had to go through physical assault, public humiliation, losing all her children, and living with that pain for 36 years, living in exile, etc. She did have some advantage of being the wife of 5 men, but that complicated her life a lot, and this polyandry brought more pain to her than, happiness.
And by the way, Draupadi went to exile only ONCE, if I'm not mistaken, for 13 years.
Apart from Draupadi, it was certainly Bhishma.
Bhishma sacrificed his throne, his life, his right to be happy, everything.
Giving up throne is one thing.
But the fact that he remained a celibate for ,I don't know ,how many years, maybe 100...that's a huge sacrifice. He did not marry, did not have children, and that is the biggest sacrifice, in my opinion.

Thanks for replying dear. Yes Draupadi suffered the most. All the reasons you gave are valid. And dear by saying the she went on exile multiple times , I have a deeper meaning.

Pandavas suffered the most I think (though you did not mention them in your list). They lost their father in early childhood, got only insult from their cousins after coming to their own home, faced murder attempts again & again. Then got a bad land to rule where they had complete right on the whole undivided Kuru throne. They were very unjustly deprived. They had to make their own fate by Karmayog, they got Lord Krishna's blessings but sufferings did not disappear from their lives. Their kingdom was snatched by cheating, their beloved wife was severally humiliated in front of their eyes, they had to suffer 12 years exile & 1 year incognito, in which they got dangers again & again like Durvasa, gandharva incident, Jayadrath, Keechak etc. After all these, poor Pandavas did not get their rights. They were even ready to forgive all unforgivable sins by not starting war in return of 5 villages, its one of the most tragic situations for me in epic. But they got nothing even after so much of sacrifices & pains. Their friend & Lord Krishna faced an attempt of arrest when He was sent as a peace messenger. Finally when Pandavas started the war, they had to suffer deaths of their beloved ones like Bhishma, Drona, all of their sons, relatives, friends etc. They never saw happiness in whole life! After knowing Karna's truth, they felt much more pain. They ruled 36 years only while there are many kings in epic & puranas ruling several hundred or thousand years. Also within these short time they had to suffer lose of Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Kunti & Vidur. They had to see their beloved Krishna's end with whole dynasty. I personally always think that they never got proper happiness in their lives. They are the real tragic heroes for me!

Draupadi according to me. She had a tough life. She was married to five and that had created a lot of trouble for her. Every other man took her for granted and lusted after her. Her own husbands kept quite when she was being almost disrobed infront of her own family and friends and all men that too. She had to always show the same kind of love for her all husbands which she obviously couldn't and I think it's so unfair for her to not have a favourite when men, clearly had favourite wives! Her children were murdered in cold blood. And the list kinda goes on! So, I think she had a tough life.

Firstly Draupadi, then Kunti and though small, I think Uttara too suffered alot.
Draupadi's full life was full of what she did not deserve. Firstly she was born to destroy the Kurus (She was not the reason behind the destruction. i dont believe that. But her father wanted her only for that.) She was not denied for father's love (as shown in StarB) but she was not born because her father wanted a daughter. She was born as a weapon to her father. I feel this is sad. Then she got married to 5 men, instead of Arjun. Then, Arjun went for exile. The one (who is said to be her favourite) was gone. Then came the dice game. She was humiliated in the worst way possible. She saw her husbands quietly sitting and tolerating it. Then came years of exile, and she even had to spend a year as a maid of a queen. the Princess of Panchaal, born to be Queen, half of her life went on in the forests. Then finally, she lost everything she had. Happiness was completely lacking in her life. Now look or fortune and happiness is not same. Panchaali was lucky about VH. She was saved by Krishna himself.
Kunti too suffered alot. She was a very unhappy woman according to me. She was given to a king by her real parents. She got married to Pandu, but could not get any facilities of a Queen. her curiously made her a jealous, bad mother to alot of the world. She lost her husband very young, with no fault of hers. She kept on hiding her secret, letting it rot and wither in her heart. When coming to HP, being the deserving Queen she and her five sons were treated the worst way possible. A attempt of murder was also made for Bheem. Then the Varnavat incident took place. How brutal can this get? Then she brought in so much darkness in a girl who was like her daughter. (knowing or not knowing). Then her sons were again humiliated and sent for exile. She went and revealed the rotten truth, and she got nothing beneficial. (If she had at all gone for benefit.) Then she lost so many grandchildren, children like people and her eldest son. She saw her husband's clan getting burned into ashes.
And lastly, a minor character in the epic, Uttara. I really feel bad for her. She was a young girl. She was married to Abhimanyu, not knowing what future awaits for her. Just after her marriage the war broke in. everything was uncertain. Who would live, who not. She lost her brothers on the first day itself. I am not sure about her father. Then she lost her husband. That too she was pregnant. Ashwathama's Brahmastra almost killed her unborn child. She gave birth to her son, without a father. She got nothing in life. She did not make any mistake. She did not ask for anything either. Still she suffered.

Suffering is actually free. Nobody asks for it. It comes naturally. make any mistake or not, suffering comes free.

I agree with Sema. I think the Pandavas and Kunti suffered the most, mostly for no fault of their own. Many of the other characters suffered under their own doing, but the Pandavas suffered tragedy from a young age.
