we can go into hair splitting argument as to what you assumed as modern rendering. Modern rendering can be modern rendering of language. I see no harm in shortening the 18th century language used in KMG to a much modern English understood by everyone.
Actually, judging a work without reading it, infact dismissing it with short imaginary review can be construed defamation. I would not tread the path if I were you.
Whatever may my grouse against KMG be, I look into the book pretty well before deciding it is not my cup of tea.
When I am debating and arguing about a character who has suffered casteism, in equalitydue to perceived birth, in short outside cover, I would be the last person to casually dismiss a well researched piece of work simple by the outside cover. But what do I know!!
Leadnitrate, I have read RM and love its fluid, modern language. But one thing I noticed is that it does tend to novelise things. Hence,we are forced with Author's POV rather than using our own judgement.
I found the author to be Karna Pro in many instants and have painted picture favourably for him.
Just to give one instant.. Fight between Bheema and Karna during Jayadrath Vadh when Bheema beats Karna comprehensively. Duryodhana sacrifices more than 50 of his brothers to save Karna. Karna faces many retreats.
If you read, RM it makes it as inner turmoil, psychological issue of Karna, "enjoying" wins of his dear brother. Every time he loses, it is because he is proud of his bro and facing a dilemma, his eyes welling up with tears. And each time he scores a victory, its because he decided his valor is aroused and he "temporarily" forgets his love for bro.
I quoted this particular incident because it is made overdramatic and loses objectivity and really was surprised to see author going to considerable length to justify Karna's defeat.
(Karna is a great warrior and has his share of defeats like everyone else)
So Diala is right when she says that author does try to interpret things his ways. It is Modern Rendering in terms of language as well as psychological interpretation of characters (ie what a novel is all about it.)
KMG on the other hands forces you to think objectively and draw your own inferences. Hence, we talk of citations from KMG. It prepares necessary groundwork for debate.
I love RM for its lucidity, elegance and connect to it instantly but hesitate to use it for citations.
