The very first step was bhishm's promise-- choosing personal duties over the welfare of a whole kingdom.

I think 3 biggest reason of MB war-

I don't blame Draupadi for the Kurukshetra war.She was just a catalyst. The main reason was Draupadi's vastraharan and Dhrithrashtra's putra moh which led to this massacre.If he had pulled the string on his arrogant son the day he started troubling Pandavas this wouldn't have happened.He never wanted or should I say chose to turn a blind eye to all of Duryodhan's cunning ways thanks to the manipulative Shakuni.

Seed of Mahabharata were bore when Yayati made Puru his yuvraj instead of Yadu. Puru founded the kuruvansh and Yadu founded the Yaduvansh. Yadu was the rightful heir of that throne. And in the end, Kunti was the daughter of Shurshena who was a yaduvanshi.. Arjuna was her son from devraj Indra and Vasudev was brother of Kunti who's daughter was Subhadra.
So their son Abhimanyu was a Yaduvansi in true sense and his descendants became ruler of that sacred land after him. The throne got its rightful heir after 30 generation, everything in between and everyone in between were just a catalyst to it. War was inevitable from the very beginning, even before any of the war participant was born.

If we look at Mahabharata almost everyone can be held directly responsible, Here are a few main culprits.

Duryodhana - If one wants to blame only one person for Kurekshetra it has to be duryodhana, he was always jealous of his cousins and thus his jealousy led to the war.

Bhishma - The person who started the saga, It was his OATH which made him helpless against Duryodhan's crimes, If he ever resisted from Dury's crimes Dury wouldnt have done it all.

Karna - He was the strength of Duryodhan, Dury never trusted Drona or Bhishma to finish the war, He only trusted Karna to finish the war, If Karna ever said that he wont fight a war Dury wouldnt have waged a war.

Shakuni - The guy who poisoned the mind of Duryodhan from the very start.

Dritharstra-Gandhari - One was blind due to a stupid OATH, and the another one was blind in his sons love.

Kunti - If she would have accepted Karna when he came at hastinapur and let him be friends with Dury the whole war would have averted because Dury wouldnt have waged a war without Karna

Krishna - The person who could kill Duryodhan with his sudarshan to avoid a million deaths.

Pandavas - They should have protested while the Dury was ordering to strip draupadi, They should have protested atleast a little bit or stop Yudi from gambling their wife

Almost every central character can be somewhere held directly responsible for Kurekshetra.

people who consider krishna a reason behind kurukshetra just coz he didnt kill all the adharmis himself havent understood the message behind mahabharat or reasons behind krishna's actions.
