There's a misconception that Bheeshm Acharya's death was tragic. It wasn't!
His life was tragic, death was glorious.

Bheeshm Acharya imparting his knowledge to Yudhisthira and reciting Vishnu sahasranama brought him undying glory. This wouldn't have been possible without siding with the Kauravas.
