It surely appears way too harsh. But the Vasus weren't ordinary beings. Dyau's act of stealing the cow with the rest turned them all into thieves.

For me Mahabharata is the saga of Bheeshma's glorious yet tragic life.

Adityon ka tej, ghani chhaya jisko karta hai
Jiski dhanu ki pratyancha se nikhil bhuvan darta hai
Devon ka devatva, naman jis narata ko karta hai
Kaaljayi, us adi purush ko manuj kaun kehta hai
Nahi manuj tum Bheeshm, manujta ki tum nav asha ho
Nishtha, bhakti, pratigya palan ki koi bhasha ho.

What's the meaning of 'Pratyancha'? Line no. 2.
