Legend behind Bheeshma's birth:

Once the eight Vasus, headed by Prithu, landed upon the earth to enjoy its beauty. One of the Vasu, Dyau's wife spotted a celestial cow Nandini, belonging to sage Vasishtha. She began admiring her beauty and desired for the cow. Thereafter she insisted her husband to steal the cow for her. Dyau agreed, not thinking about the consequences he would face later.

Hence he stole the cow along with the rest seven Vasus. Sage Vasishtha got to know about their act through his ascetic vision. He cursed them all in wrath...that they all will take birth as mortals. The Vasus then rushed to him to seek pardon. The sage then uttered that the rest seven Vasus would be freed within a year but Dyau shall have to suffer on earth for a long period. He shall not beget children, he shall be virtuous and conversant with the scriptures, an obedient son of his father but he will have no pleasure of a female companionship throughout his life.

With these words, the sage sealed a fate.

Why did Ganga left only Bheeshma to Shantanu?

The eight sons of Ganga and Shantanu were the Ashtavasus. They took birth as mortals due to a curse, the first seven were freed soon after their birth but the 8th one had to live a long life on this earth. So he was the only surviving one. Check page 2, I've posted the birth saga.

This is one among the four short poems written on Bhishma by Alok Shankar ji.

I've no idea about any book's content...as I haven't got any. Trying to figure out related information.
