I recommend you to watch Peter Brook's version of the Mahabharat. It might need some getting used to, as it has a multi-racial and international cast, but in my opinion, no other version has been able to do justice to the epic like this one. A love story between him and Amba has been hinted at in this version, which never came to fruition. I have also read interpretations where Amba, spurned by Bheeshma's rejection of her offer of marriage, and hence by extension her love, vows to kill him. And Bheeshma, in turn, acknowledges her feelings by giving up arms when she enters the battlefield.
Of course this is just one way of looking at it.
