Yes the story posted by Sruti is correct. Only one thing - Shikhandi's father in law wanted to wage a war- but before that itself Shikhandi escaped to a forest where a Yaksha gave him masculinity and in exchange took Shikhandi's feminity.

But the yaksha said this would work only for 24 hours and after that time period, Shikhandi will have to come back to the forest and give back his/ her masculinity.

Shikhandi was happy and returend to Panchala just in time to stop the war and announce that he ws indeed a man. His father in law was relieved and so was Shikhandi.

But Shikhandi's relief was only short lived. King Hiranyavarma , Shikhandi's father in law- now wanted to celebrate his daughter and son- in law's nuptial night.

Shikhandi, quaking with fear was led to the nuptial chamber. But his wife discovered nothing amiss and the couple spent a memorable night. And the next day Shikhandi's wife went to her father to tell him there was nothing to worry about

True to his word, Shikhandi went next day to the forest to return his manhood to the yaksha- but looked so distraught and forlorn that the yaksha felt sorry for him and allowd him to keep his manhood for ever.

Uh, no, what happened was that the Yaksha was cursed by I think Kubera for exchanging his sex, and told that he'd remain a woman forever. Later, the curse was softened to last only Shikhandi's lifetime i.e. after Shikhandi died, the yaksha would get back his sex

It's in Udyog Parva, where Bheeshma describes everything to Duryodhan

Drupada had eleven sons along with Dhrishtadyumna. Their names were: Satyajit,Shikhandi( Shilhandi was originally born as a girl, and used to be the princess of Kashi, Amba, who wanted to take revenge on Bhishma) , Uttamauja, Kumar, Yudhamanyu, Vrika,Panchalya, Suratha, Shatrunjaya and Janamejaya.[7] Most of them died in the Mahabharata war. Dhrishtadyumna,Shikandi,Yudhamanyu and Uttamauja were killed by Ashwatthama on the last day of the war

I guess he must have killed them after the war was over, like he killed Draupadi's son when he thaought that the 5 pandavs were sleeping.

If I want to make changes of my own version, I will put Drishtadyumna since the Gurudhaksina war.. This will do 2 things for me:
1. We dont need magical son who suddenly born as a grown up (average) warrior.. So this will make him at least at the same age as Pandavas.(Draupadi doesnt have to be born many years later also, since after the war im Asramavasika Parva Section xxv she looks old already,among other wives.

2. This war will be a great consideration for the Pandavas to choose him later as supreme general of their 7 aukshouhinis combined forces. Maybe they won the war by capturing Drupad but should they continue, Panchala, orchestrated by Drishtadyumna would've turn the table.
Otherwise why it has to be someone who will kill Drona as Bhishma was more important at that stage. Why dont they choose Shikandi as suggested by Bheema?(yes Bheema knew Bhishma's secret from day 1 or Vyasa's knowledge as the writer got mixed up in his writing) The logical explanation must be they know Drishtadyumna as a capable war general before. He doesnt have to be best fighter, but best leader!

But Both Dhrishtdum and Draupadi came out of the Yagya fire at the same time First Dhrishtdum then Draupadi

True he was a capable strategist for planning and plotting war. He was an excellent warrior too.
He was an expert in weapons when he came out of yagya.

Yes they both came out of fire.. It's just "IF" i could make my own version, I'll make him (Drishtadyumna) participate against kauravas and pandavas instead of Shikandi in the tv show version. It's just that It works better without magic to me :)
How do they know he was excellent leader if panchala itself never did any digvijay or at least important war under Dristadyumna leadership. So I prefer to make pandavas experienced themselves.

I read somewhere twins prefered drupad and virat or the army general, arjun choose drishtadyumna coz he will kill drona, bheema wanted Shikandi coz he will kill bhishma and finally krishna supported arjun's option so D got 2 votes. Maybe Vrish can help to locate the exact verse here (he is the master of KMG version, right? :)
But of course it has to be from panchala as they gave biggest army and being the 2nd after pandavas to settle score with hastina..
