He was not cruel- just wanted what he thought should have been his and his sons. He was born blind but all his life thought he would be King. Then Pandu became King. He felt jealous ( as siblings do ) then when he got married- there was Sakuni poising his thinking.
Sakuni's influence nursed his insecurities. His children were influenced hence the family problems.

No he wasn't cruel or bad the way he's being portrayed.

But yes he was blind in his 'Putra-moh' which became the kingdom's curse.

Dhiritashtra knew about the plot to kill the Pandavas in the House of Lac. So yes Dhiritashtra was evil by then...

He was basically a biased man, and in a lot of dilemma, whether to choose his sons or to stick to the duties of a king... yes, he was easily swayed, and poor judgement over people's intentions, or look though a person... sadly, and quite ironically, he was truly blind, not just physically. They way he is portrayed is just OTT. I cant imagine why would they show him in such poor light? To show his failure as a king and a father?
