This is the part of Pandava history narrated to Janamejaya by Vaisampayana.. Can anyone clarify why Ulupi-Iravan and Chitrangada-Babruvahana are missing here? it cant be for the conditions of their marriages, Hidimbi-Gatotkacha being mentioned.. is this a miss or does this imply something else?

After that the Pandavas slew Hidimva, and then they went to a town called Ekachakra. There also they slew a Rakshasa of the name of Vaka and then went to Panchala. And there obtaining Draupadi for a wife they returned to Hastinapura. And there they dwelt for some time in peace and begat children. And Yudhishthira begat Prativindhya; Bhima, Sutasoma; Arjuna, Srutakriti; Nakula, Satanika; and Sahadeva, Srutakarman. Besides these, Yudhishthira, having obtained for his wife Devika, the daughter of Govasana of the Saivya tribe, in a self-choice ceremony, begat upon her a son named Yaudheya. And Bhima also obtaining for a wife Valandhara, the daughter of the king of Kasi, offered his own prowess as dower and begat upon her a son named Sarvaga. And Arjuna also, repairing to Dwaravati, brought away by force Subhadra. the sweet-speeched sister of Vasudeva, and returned in happiness to Hastinapura. And he begat upon her a son named Abhimanyu endued with all accomplishments and dear to Vasudeva himself. And Nakula obtaining for his wife Karenumati, the princess of Chedi, begat upon her a son named Niramitra. And Sahadeva also married Vijaya, the daughter of Dyutimat, the king of Madra, obtaining her in a self-choice ceremony and begat upon her a son named Suhotra. And Bhimasena had some time before begat upon Hidimva a son named Ghatotkacha. These are the eleven sons of the Pandavas.

Oversight from KMG...I presume...

I mean, the KMG translation otherwise gives details of Arjuna's exile and his involvement with Ulupi and Chitrangada, right?

Actually there are many such oversights in the KMG translation. Sanskrit is a tough language and lends itself to different interpretations and even monosyllabic words convey a lot so quite possible to overlook words and miss

In Udyog Parva, after Bheeshma narrated to Duryodhan the story of Shikhandi, Duryodhan agreed that it was proper of Bheeshma not to fight him.

In which case, why did anybody on the Kaurava side fight Shikhandi? It's not like it was okay for any man except Bheeshma to fight a woman

I'm just making a guess here, but was it commonly known that Shikhandi was a woman turned into a man?

Bheeshma told Duryodhan abt Sikhandi and Duryodhan to Dushasan just before the war begins.. so probably Dury Dushi and anyone who surrounded Dushi would know.. others might not..
My Questions:
1) Is Arjuna narrating Chakravyuha to Subhadra while she sleeps off from the epic or a folklore? can I have the section if the former?
2) Did time stop when the Gita was sung or was that an interpolation? I read that the war began after Krishna completed comforting Arjuna.
3) How did Satyaki end up fighting for the Pandavas? Isn't he a part of Narayani Sena which fought for Kauravas?

1) Just finished reading 'Haranaharana Parva'. No mention of her dozing off. Just states that Subhadra gave birth to Abhimanyu. Now, if KMG mentions elsewhere in the epic about the "midway dozing" thing, then I don't know. And if it's folklore, then I would be extremely interested in knowing about the origins of this folklore...because that is one of the first-ever things I learnt about Abhimanyu!

Oh, and in 'Haranaharana Parva', the birth of Abhimanyu is "mentioned" BEFORE the birth of Panchali's sons...though it does not state if Abhimanyu was born before any of the Upapandavas or not...

2) I would think that the events of Kurukshetra were in 'suspended animation' while Gita narration was in progress.

3) I have read that Satyaki was a Pandava supporter through and through despite being part of the Narayani sena. He was extremely devoted to Krishna, and shared a strong equation with Arjuna. Maybe on that account, Satyaki became part of the Pandava army, I guess. Need to search for evidence...

Thanks Shani..
1) Me too tired of searching preggy Subhi sleeping off.. so posted here.. yeah agreed Drau sons were mentioned after Abhimanyu.. but that does not evidence he was the first born.. I think as the story itself is about Subhadraharan so Abhimanyu was mentioned first..
2) is it mentioned in the epic? I dint find that.. also read a note in a book that the war began after Gita.. what I read exactly is Arjuna's chariot was in between the Pandava and Kaurava armies.. Gita was recited when the armies were arranging themselves..
3) Dint Krishna say either unarmed me or Yadav Sena?

no she did not doze off. but here is what says in KMG:

Abhimanyu said, 'Desiring victory to my sires, soon shall I in battle penetrate into that firm, fierce and foremost of arrays formed by Drona. I have been taught by my father the method of (penetrating and) smiting this kind of array. I shall not be able, however, to come out if any kind of danger overtakes me.'

Not seeing the son of Subhadra there, Arjuna said, 'Pale is the colour I behold of the faces of you all. I do not, again, see Abhimanyu. Nor doth he come to congratulate me. I heard that Drona had today formed the circular array. None amongst you, save the boy Abhimanyu, could break that array. I, however, did not teach him how to come out of that array, after having pierced it. Did you cause the boy to enter that array?

and you all know what was the carnage that teenage boy did during that single day :
10,000 warriors slain (kings including king Vrihadvala of Kosala)
1000 men on steeds and elephants
8,000 cars
900 elephants
2000 princes (children of kauravs and others, ousins to abhimanyu)

You're welcome...😊

My dad told me about the 'suspended animation' thing. Not sure myself though. Yes, Arjuna's chariot was bang in the middle of the battlefield...

But I would like to know how long did the Gita itself take to get narrated completely? I mean, if the Pandava and Kaurava armies were completely aware of this particular conversation in progress between Krishna & Arjuna, surely they would be wondering about how long it would take for the conversation to wind up so that the battle would finally commence...

Yes - the "me or Narayani sena" was said by Krishna. But if the reason for Satyaki being on the Pandava side is not stated in the epic, then I assume that his association with Krishna & Arjuna would've made him take the Pandava side...
