Vrish, what do you think about mb chronology on hindu net?

I think it says that after returning, pandavas lived in hp for five years while ip was being built.

Which was a distortion, since no one who claims parshuram was karnas only teacher provides any citation from any translation, southern, northern, critical e.
In adi parva, it is mentioned that radhas son learnt archery with kaurva, pandava, yadu vrishni princes and duri used to encourage him to spite the pandavas esp. Arjuna.
When karna gate crashed the rangbhumi event, all knew who he was.

agree medha but one more doubt in kmg when karna showed up at rangbhoomi did everybody recognize him" oh its our old buddy from gurukul" ?

I haven't seen the MB chronology - will have to look it up - couldn't find the link on hindunet.org - do you have the link? I don't think it unlikely that the Pandavas stayed @ Hastinapur while Indraprastha was being built.

The other thing about Karna being known - from my reading of both the Adi Parva & the Shanti Parva portions, it's clear that when Karna gatecrashed that event, Drona's students recognized him, but didn't know him. Duryodhan did not address him by name, but Arjun did.

In school, I knew the names of several kids in other classes, but nothing more about them. That may well have been the case w/ Karna as well - Arjun may have known him by name, but just that, and nothing more. The claim that Duryodhan was friends w/ Karna in Drona's gurukul is unsupported even by Shanti Parva: Karna became Duryodhan's friend after that tournament, and following that, he became Parashurama's disciple for the same time that Arjun & Sahadev did advanced training w/ Drona, and Bhima did advanced training in mace fighting w/ Balarama. That would be the period b/w the defeat of Drupada and the house of lac.

That is supported by Duryodhan addressing him as 'O mighty-armed warrior!', 'O polite one', 'O represser of enemies'... in the Adi parva account of their first encounter.

R.C dutt also did a translation and later P.lal did a complete translation of poetric translation of R.Cdutt, But is this unabridged?

Clay sanskrt libarary is also doing a translation ( 15 volumes done of 32) not based on the critical edition but on the version known to a famous scholar named Nilkantha.

Are there any other unabrigded translations in Hindi or bengali?

@ blue : Clay Sanskrit library became insolvent and shut shop some time ago. The MB project was abandoned halfway. The translations that were done- I don't know if they have been uploaded online anywhere. Since the entire library has become defunct, all my emails to them bounced back or have been lost in cyberspace.

Recently however, the library has been revived - and renamed- thanks to a munificent donation from Narayan Murthy. While earlier, the focus was on Sanskrit literature, now after its punarjanam, it has widened its scope to all Indian Literature.

@ pink : Regarding Neelakantha, the Sanskrit scholar and his association with MB, see my post here-

@ red : P Lal essentially followed KMG, so to that extent it would have been unabridged.

"Then Drona endued with great prowess taught the sons of Pandu (the use of) many weapons both celestial and human. And, O bull of the Bharata race, many other princes also flocked to that best of Brahmanas for instruction in arms. The Vrishnis and the Andhakas, and princes from various lands, and the (adopted) son of Radha of the Suta caste, (Karna), all became pupils of Drona. But of them all, the Suta child Karna, from jealousy, frequently defied Arjuna, and supported by Duryodhana, used to disregard the Pandavas. Arjuna, however, from devotion to the science of arms, always stayed by the side of his preceptor, and in skill, strength of arms, and perseverance, excelled all (his class-fellows)."

But how come if they were not friends, Duryodhana was supporting Karna in anything?
I would even believe that they were not friends, fast friends, brothers.
This doesnt sound like they did not know each other at all even as acquaintance, people who were inclined towards each other.

Well, you can read and make your assumptions :

Begotten by the Sun himself, he was tall in stature like a golden palm tree, and, endued with the vigour of youth, he was capable of slaying a lion. Handsome in features, he was possessed of countless accomplishments. The mighty-armed warrior, eyeing all around the arena, bowed indifferently to Drona and Kripa. And the entire assembly, motionless and with steadfast gaze, thought, 'Who is he?' And they became agitated in their curiosity to know the warrior. And that foremost of eloquent men, the offspring of the Sun, in a voice deep as that of the clouds, addressed his unknown brother, the son of the subduer

p. 288

of the Asura, Paka (Indra), saying, 'O Partha, I shall perform feats before this gazing multitude; excelling all thou hast performed! Beholding them, thou shall be amazed.' And, O thou best of those blest with speech, he had hardly done when the spectators stood up all at once, uplifted by some instrument, as it were. And, O tiger among men, Duryodhana was filled with delight, while Vibhatsu was instantly all abashment and anger. Then with the permission of Drona, the mighty Karna, delighting in battle, there did all that Partha had done before. And, O Bharata, Duryodhana with his brothers thereupon embraced Karna in joy and then addressed him saying, 'Welcome O mighty-armed warrior! I have obtained thee by good fortune, O polite one! Live thou as thou pleasest, and command me, and the kingdom of the Kurus.' Kama replied, 'When thou hast said it, I regard it as already accomplished. I only long for thy friendship. And, O lord, my wish is even for a single combat with Arjuna.' Duryodhana said, 'Do thou with me enjoy the good things of life! Be thou the benefactor of thy friend, and, O represser of enemies, place thou thy feet on the heads of all foes."

From the above citation, Duryodhan obviously didn't know Karna, which contradicts the excerpt on the previous page about Karna being encouraged by him to disregard the Pandavas

I tend to think that Narada was trash talking Karna in order to console Yudisthir, who was filled w/ self loathing @ that point: both Adi Parva & Shanti Parva contradict each other, and cannot be simultaneously accurate. However, the reference to what got Karna to go to Parashurama clearly indicates that those events happened after that tournament, not b4, as shown in ⭐️bharata

Medha

I looked @ the chronology, and the years seem way off. Abhimanyu couldn't have been 46 when he was killed. Also the stats - as great as Karna was, he was commander for just 2 days, and fought for just 6 days. He couldn't have killed more warriors than Bheeshma, Drona or even Ashwatthama. If one sees the list of Pandava warriors killed, the bulk were killed by either Drona, or Ashwatthama. In some rare cases, Bheeshma killed a few, like Sveta or Shatanika, and Shalya killed Uttar, Karna Ghatotkacha & Panchala, but otherwise, the bulk of warriors were killed either by Drona or Ashwatthama.

Somehow, it's hard to get the stats straight in the MB. Even the facts are difficult, given how Vyasa freely contradicts himself in various places.
