Chapter Twenty-One - The Bullet
I slowly opened my eyes. My eyelids felt like a million pounds as I attempted to open them. I noticed a bright, flaring light above me and I closed my eyes tight in response to the light. Then I heard a voice.
"She's waking! Bittuji, the light!"
His voice. I noticed the room go dim from behind my closed eyelids and then I attempted to open my eyes again. This time I was successful. My vision was blurred at first, so I had to close my eyes again. I slowly opened them again, blinking a couple times, and then looked around at the room. For some reason, I was seeing the room as if I were the patient. I noticed a figure to my right and I instantly glanced towards my right. He sat there, a smile on his tired-looking face. Had he not slept?
I instantly remembered him nearly being shot. I looked at him and he looked healthy, but maybe he had been hurt, maybe he wasn't okay. I instantly began to try sitting up but he held onto my shoulders and slowly placed me back down.
"Madhu! Don't get up...do you need something?!"
I shook my head, a tear falling from one of my eyes, and then I opened my mouth. I tried to speak, but at first just odd noises came out of my mouth. Finally, I managed to get one word out of my mouth.
"Gun..."
His expression was full of confusion at first and then he seemed to guess at what I meant.
"You're okay now Madhu, there's no guns..."
Why was he comforting me?
It took me a moment, I closed my eyes again. I thought back to what had happened at the scene that day.
The gun was pointed at RK's forehead. Harry readied himself to pull the trigger. My feet pulled me forwards and I ran, I ran as though my life were on the line if I didn't save him. I jumped and pushed RK out of the way, in the process shocking Harry, causing him to fire his gun. I felt a pain, a sharp pain...on my right side of my chest...a sharp...dreadful pain...
"HER HEARTRATE'S INCREASING! CALL THE DOCTOR! MADHU!"
I heard his voice and I gasped. My eyes opened wide as I attempted to breathe. It felt as though I were suffocating. A terrible feeling. One I never want to feel again. Then I just remember falling back and nothing else.
I didn't know how much time had passed when I finally began coming to my senses again. This time, opening my eyes wasn't so difficult. I looked towards my right and RK sat there in the same position, wearing the same clothes. He was leaning his head on his hand, his eyes closed. He had formed dark circles under his eyes and it was more than obvious that he had been depriving himself of sleep. It felt good to know he cared.
I began trying to sit up when he opened his eyes.
"Madhu?"
He helped me sit up this time. He took his seat again and just stared at me as I stared back.
"Y...you..."
"I'm okay Madhu."
I smiled, a faint, tired smile. I looked around at the room as I felt his eyes on me. I looked back at him and then wondered what had happened after I had been shot. I creased my forehead and tried to remember but couldn't.
"How do you feel now Madhu...?"
I slowly nodded my head up and down, gesturing that I was okay. Then my eyes landed on my hand. I hadn't even noticed that his hands were holding onto mine. It was sweet. He looked down at our hands and didn't pull away. That was a first. I looked back up at him.
"What...hap...happened to..."
He sighed and looked down at our hands while he spoke slowly, I could sense the tinge of anger in his voice.
"They died in the fire...the fire got out of control and the police stepped away, asking me to leave with them. I quickly picked you up and ran out. I turned around to see only flames...nothing else..."
I smiled. It felt good knowing they got the same fate, if not worse, than our families. Karma. It always comes to bite you in the end.
"Madhu, you should rest."
"I...I want to...go home RK."
"Tomorrow. Rest."
"You...need to rest...more than me..."
"I'm fine."
He stood, helped me lie back down, and I couldn't help but close my eyes.
