This is something so different from what I have ever done.. And am enjoying the darkness too much..

I am a sucker from tragedies. So, you have my *unsolicited* permission to go all out.

Chapter 3

As usual as soon as he walked into the dining room the room went silent. There was not a peep from anyone. None of the children wanted to bring any attention towards them. They sat silently with bowed heads waiting for him to eat the first morsel. That was the indicator that they could start eating. They ate whatever was served to them, whether they liked it or not, whether it was cooked well or not, whether it had any taste to it or not. If they didn't they would have to face his wrath.

His chair creaked as he pulled it back to sit down. As he sat down on his chair at the head of the table, he looked around the table at all the children and then at his wife who sat at the other end opposite him. He raised his spoon and scooped up a spoonful of soup and brought it to his nose. "Hmmm... Smells delicious sweetheart", he announced to his wife before he gulped down the soup.

The children went to work on their own bowls of soup, each one trying to finish up their dinner faster than the other so that they could get out of the room as soon as possible. No one wanted to hear their name being called out.

Rishab gulped down his hot soup not caring about the burning sensation he felt as it went down. It is still better than what he would have to go through if his name was called out.

As soon as he had finished his soup he rose quietly gathering his plate and bowl and walked towards the kitchen to leave it at the sink. He was happy that he was one of the first ones to finish and a few more steps and he would be out of there, safe. But this Lucky One was out of luck tonight.

"Rishab.." he called out calmly. Rishab froze in his spot as soon as his name was called out. "I would like to see you in my office after dinner boy." That one sentence sent chills down his spine. After that it was like he had switched off or rather running offline. As if on auto pilot he walked into the kitchen and placed his plate and bowl into the sink. He washed his hands and face in the nearby wash-basin and slowly walked towards the office, which was in the basement of the house.

The other children breathe a sigh of relief as soon as Rishab's name was called out. Every child got a turn some time in their life to go visit the office. But Rishab and Madhu seemed to be called into the office pretty regularly, after all they were the Lucky Ones.

Rishab didn't knock as he entered the office. He had not finished his dinner yet so he was yet to arrive. Rishab walked into the office and looked at the big bouncy couch placed in the center of the room with hatred. It was the same couch which couples used to sit on when they came to see the children, basically glance at them as if glancing through a catalogue of some kind, deciding which of them is cute and healthy and will be the right fit to introduce into their social circle as their son or daughter. But given their current situation, that life would be any day better than the one they were leading here in Heaven's Angels Orphanage. But that was not the reason for his hatred. It was what happened to them on that couch all the other times.

Rishab heard a sound at the door and rushed to take a seat on the couch. He entered grinning ear to ear. He locked the door behind him. He took a cigarette out and lit it up, puffing up smoke in the air as he dragged a chair and place it in front of the couch facing it. "Boy... what are you waiting for? Do I have to tell you what to do every time?" he asked annoyed.

"Sorry Sir" he answered meekly before he closed his eyes, numbing himself for what was to come. He stood up slowly, unbuttoning his shirt with shivering fingers. He sat there on the chair waiting, watching every move, taking pleasure in his sufferings. Rishab's exposed frail body not just revealed his nakedness but the abuse that had been going on. Burnt cigarette marks on his arms and legs, bluish red marks on his back revealing the belting he received regularly, the blackish marks on his inner thighs had a story of its own.. but these were only some of the physical reminders of the ongoing abuse. The marks eventually fade away till more marks are made in their place but the mark it left on their soul might never heal.

Rishab never screamed, never struggled. You wouldn't even hear a whimper from him. He just lay there, motionless, waiting for the ordeal to end. Making a noise, struggling, only made it worse. Every child had learnt that lesson early on, during their first few times. They learnt that it was best to numb themselves to the ordeal, block it out, just lay there till it was over and then get up and get on with life. Pretend that it was all a dream. If you don't talk about it, it never happened.

Rishab rose from the couch and gathered his clothes which he had folded neatly and placed on the side table. Putting them on he hobbled towards the door, a little sore, more bruised than before, unlocked it and just before he walked outside, he heard him say satisfyingly, 'Well done my boy.. my Lucky One..Well done!!'. He joined the other children in the dormitory where they were getting ready for bed. No one looked up when he walked in. But the sudden silence in the room indicated that they knew of his presence. As an unspoken rule, the bathroom was cleared immediately for the one who returned from the office.

Rishab stepped into the shower and turned it on letting the burning hot water spray on his tiny frail body. He stood under it letting everything wash away. Usually you could hear the child who just got back from a visit to the office cry in the bathroom. But not Rishab. He visited the office too many times to have any tears left. There was one more like him. She too was one of his favourites. Madhu. Rishab and Madhu - the 'Lucky Ones'... his 'Lucky Ones'..

That is what usually happens... People refrain from even acknowledging the fact that stuff like this happens.. Everyday ..Everywhere... And because we do not want to believe that something as evil as this exists... we ignore it or turn a blind eye to it...
I want people to be open... acknowledge its existence.. because only when we acknowledge that it happens we can progress towards doing something to stop it..
