Part 16
RK took Madhu straight to his mother's room and after knocking the door twice he entered before gaining an approval. "Maa?"
"I don't want to talk to you Rishu till you bring her here." Radha, mother of the superstar RK was lying on her bed, her eyes shut and some old song playing in the background.
"Maa open your eyes. Madhu is here to meet you." He announced taking Madhu inside the room further.
Madhu had been dreading the worst scenario the whole way. The only relief she had gotten when RK had offered his hand and had squeezed it gently to calm her down but as soon as she had heard his mother's voice she knew she had made a mistake. Her voice had a calming effect on her nerves but it fueled the heat that was spreading in her heart. Her feet felt numb and fingers cold but the pressure on her hand made her stand where she was if not she had fainted right there. It was wrong to cheat a mother but there was no way she was backing away now and that too when she had promised him that she would help him no matter what the circumstances would be.
Radha sat on her bed and saw her for the first time, dressed in a dark blue suit. One glance at her and Radha knew she was the one made for her son, call it a motherly instinct or something divine but she felt the connection in that moment. Getting out of the bed slowly she took something out of the drawer of the side table and turned around looking at Madhu intently with a face that showed nothing, not even displeasure at Madhu's presence. It made Madhu more nervous and anxious for her reaction. RK had been standing silently, watching his mother promptly but he had to say his mother was playing fair. He knew what Radha had taken out from the drawer but he wanted to see Madhu's reaction to that.
"Namaste." Madhu said but Radha didn't acknowledge it let alone say anything and Madhu knew she was doomed. In the car RK had told that his mother was a loving and caring human and she would accept her as her daughter-in-law. He had told that his mother wanted a girl for him no matter how she was and Madhu had made a face on that remark thinking that he didn't consider her as a nice girl.
"So you like my boy?" Radha said wrapping the end of her saree around her palms.
"I do." She said her voice confident. It was truth. No matter how you tell the truth it would sound confident and Radha being a mother was capable enough to read the truthfulness in her words.
"You don't love him for his status or money?" Radha knew she was being harsh but it was for the best for both her son and Madhu. She wanted to confirm that they were feigning as lovers but she was sure there was something between them when she had seen the clip. And here in her room the way they were looking at each other was enough to know that there was a spark in their eyes. She was now certain that RK might have forced Madhu to act as his lover but what was the benefit for Madhu in all this. She wanted to know what her motive in all this was and there was no way she was letting that opportunity pass by.
"What?" Madhu was astonished to hear those words from her mouth. She couldn't think of anything than this and it came out little louder than she had expected it to be but now the damage was done. Her mother would reject her and RK was doomed now. He had to marry someone else.
Radha stopped near Madhu and took her hand in hers surprising her to the core. She slid the bangles on Madhu's each hand lovingly and smiled suddenly, exact opposite of what Madhu had anticipated. "Welcome to the family Madhu Beta. I am an actor's mother so it was your welcoming speech." She laughed and caressed Madhu's cheeks lovingly and Madhu didn't know why but she bent down to take her blessing on instinct. In that moment Madhu wanted nothing else but blessings of that woman who had given birth to the only friend she had in this world apart from her own family in spite of fact that just a minute ago she had accused her of being a gold-digger.
"These are the same my mother-in-law gave to me. It's yours now." Radha said.
"Okay if the scene is done can I have a proper dinner? I am hungry and haven't eaten anything since morning." RK complained.
"Why didn't you tell me then?" Radha almost shouted at his carelessness but controlled herself in the nick of time. She didn't want to shout on his son in front of her future daughter-in-law. "Com'on let's go down." She caressed Madhu's face again and asked. "Was I good?"
Madhu knew what she meant and decided to go with the truth. "Extremely. I was scared for a minute there. I thought you were the new version of Lalita Pawaar." And Radha burst into laughter watching the play of emotions on her face. Really this girl had been afraid of her, she thought. Now she had an important task in her hand to do. To keep an eye on her son and Madhu and she knew it would be difficult to know what was going in the heads of both of them. But most of it all she wanted to know Madhu more, to be certain of the intuition she had when she had first set her eyes on her. She knew if ever her son told the truth of not in a relationship with Madhu then she would make him to marry her.
