CHAPTER 6 " Does He Or Does He Not?
September 2009,Motihari
Dear Rishabh
Hmphh! Don't stare! I am both upset and angry with you. When I, due to my magnanimous nature and kind heart decide to forgive you for not sending me a wedding anniversary present you have the nerve to forget my birthday present as well?? It wasn't even as if you didn't know what I wanted. I told you in 3 separate letters that I wanted a journal bound in leather with M.K written on it for me to practice my English writing. Is that so hard? That's it; I wash my hands of you
Weeell I'll forgive you again
As part of my 17th birthday I have made a decision. I am quitting school. Before you start frowning , you have to understand that I am the one running our farm and fields now and therefore I can't find the time to attend school anyways. So why keep myself enrolled?
That is what I told Ma and Sarpanch kaka. In reality I came up to my room and cried. Psst-Don't tell anyone. You are the only one who knows that. But then you know everything about me
This I think is why I keep writing to you despite being snubbed by you in this royal manner. I can tell you anything and I know that even though you don't reply you are there for me. I can feel you with me, especially when I have to do something difficult
Enough about me! I have exciting news. A new theatre is being built about 2 km away from Motihari! Imagine, I can see every one of your movies the day it comes out. Aren't you glad? I was THRILLED
The media finally dubbed you Superstar, I see. All I can say was it was overdue. Humph! You are much better than all those buddhas on screen. I was very proud though. I heard Rajeev praising you to Naina Didi who lives next to the school. If they only knew that RK the superstar is the same Rishabh who passed through our village and staged a live drama last year?
Lots of Love and Hugs
Your Madhu
****************************************************************************
Mumbai, Present Day
Madhu paced outside the hospital room, wringing her hands and trying to tamp down the panic rising in her heart. He was all right wasn't he? Once the crowd had found out that it was Superstar RK underneath the car they had immediately called an ambulance She had helped the bewildered secretary to load him into the ambulance and had followed them with a groggy Mukund in an auto. And now all she could was waiting for news as she had been for the past 4 hrs
He would be all right, Of Course he would be all right! He was indestructible, this wonderful annoying man and she would be damned before she saw anything happen to him on her watch. Nevertheless...she gnawed at her fingernails anxiously
The sound of footsteps caused he to look up eagerly. A doctor had appeared behind her, his face creased into a reassuring smile. "How is he" she demanded eagerly not wasting time. "Your friend? He is fine my dear barring a nasty headache. Once he sleeps it off he will be fine"
"Not him!" Madhu stamped her foot in frustration "RK! How is he?"
The doctor looked surprised before saying "Mr. RK's condition has improved too. He is now conscious and talking normally"
Madhu heaved a sigh of relief, unbidden tears rising to her eyes. If anything had happened...
"Can I see him?" she asked hopefully. The doctor who had by now lost his smile and looked intensely suspicious instead asked in a voice, tinged with cold haughtiness "I'm afraid you need to be a relative of Mr. RK to do so Madam. Are you?"
Madhu flushed. Who was she to him? What relation could she give to this man and the rest of the world? Suddenly overcome with her emotions and the events of the day she sat down, her legs giving way
"Doctor Saab" a voice echoed behind them. Both Madhu and the Doctor turned to see the plump bird like secretary hurrying up, a harried look on his face. He pulled up short at the sight of Madhu. Smiling wanly, she stood up and murmured an excuse to leave when he opened his mouth and said
"Miss Malik, my Chief would like to see you right now"
Madhu stood stock still. RK wanted to see her? Her? He had recognized her name!!
For a moment the world stood still. He had recognized her name, she told herself again a shock of dazzling joy sweeping through her. He KNEW her. She felt herself shaking
"Get a grip on yourself! "Scolding herself mentally, she lifted her suddenly radiant face to Bittuji and said "Give me a minute. I will be right with you"
Bittuji nodded, his face impassive, successfully hiding his inner confusion. Who this girl was and how she was related to the Chief he didn't know. She had suddenly swept in when the accident had happened, directed 4 men to carry his Chief out of the wreckage, had whipped off her Dupatta and pressed it to the unconscious RK's bleeding head and within 10 minutes had RK safely placed inside the ambulance. And once she had assured herself that her companion was fine she had spent all her time outside RK's room, looking even more worried than he himself was. Bittuji shook his head. Probably an incredibly devoted fan
Madhu meanwhile had located the rest room and was surveying herself critically in the mirror. When RK had been lying injured she had no time to worry over trivial things such as her appearance. But now that she was about to meet him, a conscious healthy RK who REMEMBERED her, her appearance suddenly seemed of paramount importance. She stared at herself in the mirror and sighed
Her hair was currently mimicking a bird's nest. Streaks of mud and blood disfigured her face. Her Kurta was in a similar state. Sighing again she set to work.
Sometimes she wished she had been gifted with a quarter of her sister's beauty. Or even a tenth would have been enough. Savagely retying the ribbon in her hair she brooded over the injustice shown by the Universe
There. She stared at her reflection. She looked presentable. With her best smile, she almost looked pretty. Darting a glance around guiltily, she removed a bindi stuck to the mirror and placed it on her own forehead before marching out, the small inner bubble of joy expanding with each step
Reaching at RK's door, she knocked gently. A loud "Come In" encouraged her to open the door and slip in.
He was lying on the white bed in the corner of the room frowning at some documents in his hands. She stared at him, absorbing each line, the way he sat, the curves of his face, the planes of his body, her eyes turning soft involuntarily. The 5 yrs had changed him a little, there were more lines on his face now and the angles of his body and face were sharper. He had been a man just out of boyhood then, now he was a grim looking stranger. She gulped
As if they had heard the tiny sound, two dark eyes suddenly snapped up to meet her gaze. For a moment she stood transfixed
This was no stranger! This was Rishabh, her husband, the man who had saved her from a horrible fate all those years ago. He might have acquired a few extra lines but the eyes, those glorious dark eyes still remained the same. She smiled then, a wide beaming smile
The face remained impassive. He seemed to be looking her up and down, assessing her. Her smile fell down a notch. She frowned
"Miss Malik, I presume?" he asked brusquely
Madhu stared. The happy little bubble had abruptly disappeared and in its place something cold and clammy was working its way through her body. In a slightly wavering voice she said "Yes, but"
He cut her off "What is your full name?"
She was panicking now. He hadn't recognized her after all. But surely, surely he would recognize her given name, the name he himself had called her all those years ago?
" Madhubala...But people call me Madhu" she said as loudly as she could staring intently into those eyes. Dear God...
There wasn't a flicker of recognition in them
Madhu suddenly felt the whole world go black
