OK as to why RK doesn't reply, we aren't even sure the letters are reaching him. Most of the story for me , I see it through Madhu's eyes and very little through RK's eyes, so I have very little idea about his actions as such.
For him this marriage was a formality to save a young child so we don't know whether he is even getting the letters or reading them
