Chapter 38

Abby glanced at her friend when they rejoined the group. Hmm, did he tell her the truth? Madhu caught her eye and decided to sit next to her for now. "Hey," she said as she sat down. "Hey back. So...?"

She bit her bottom lip and hesitated looking around. Abby shook her head. "Let's talk later, okay?" she said when Akash sat down as well.

Harpreet glanced up when Rishab crouched down next to the fire to warm his hands. "Hey, man, where'd you go?" "We were just enjoying the view at night," Rishab said, not really interested in sharing anything else.

Adam looked at Madhu intensely trying to gauge the situation. "Hey, we were just talking about tomorrow... you ready for another day?" "Sure, what's up for tomorrow?" Madhu asked and waited for one of the guides to speak up.

Rishab glanced at Harpreet and grinned when he saw the way the younger guide was fidgeting. He motioned for Harpreet to go ahead and start talking. "You get to scale the side of a glacier tomorrow!" Her tone gave away her excitement. It was usually one of her favourite parts of this climb.

"Yeah, and hopefully the weather will stay calm tomorrow," Akash added. "I checked the weather report and so far, everything seems to be cool." Rishab nodded. "We'll get a bit of a later start tomorrow, but you'll appreciate the extra rest. It's gonna be a very physically demanding day."

"Who's gonna bring Deepali to the pickup point?" Madhu asked.

"Rishab and I will take her and Sikander and we'll leave you guys with Akash... do us a favor and don't push his annoying ass off the mountain or anything before Rishab gets back."

"Uh-huh." They replied through bouts of laughter, while Akash tried to give everyone the 'Rishab glare'.

Rishab looked at Madhu, noting her silence and wishing he knew what to say or do to fix things between them. Madhu glanced up and caught Rishab's gaze, wondering what he was thinking right now. Could they really figure things out between them? Talk about the past, the present and the future... everything?

"I'm gonna get my tent set up," Akash said as he stood and stretched. "Much as I love the thought of sharing with you guys I think I'm gonna pass."

Rishab rolled his eyes. "Same here." And the worst thing was that Deepali was lying in his tent, which meant he had to sleep somewhere else. "Deepali's not in any immediate danger, so there's no reason for us to camp out with you, Harpreet, to keep an eye on her. Plus I think Sikander is not going to leave hers or your side tonight."

Harpreet glared at him for a second but a small smile slowly made its way to her face as she thought about Sikander and how he is so concerned about Deepali and is even going back with them to care for her.

"You can sleep in my tent, Adam and Abby are already settled in the other tent." Madhu said to Rishab. For a brief moment his heartbeat sped up, but then he realized that she didn't mean that he could sleep in her tent with her. "Something better than nothing," he muttered to himself as he nodded.

"Alright, you guys," Adam yawned, "we're gonna call it a night." Abby held onto Adam's shoulder as she stood up. "Be back in a few... gotta talk to Madhu before she bunks for the night," she whispered.

Adam nodded and then glanced at Rishab, the only guy left at the fire with him. "Chick talk," he said when he saw the guide's eyes follow the girls. "They won't go too far, don't worry." Rishab lifted his coffee cup to acknowledge the other man. "So, you and Abby... good friends with Madhu, huh?" "Yeah. Best Friends. So, you and Madhu... just friends?

Damn, it was that obvious, huh? "Yeah, kinda..." Adam grinned, turning the heat on under him. "Be more if it was up to you, huh?" "Would ya believe me if I said no?"

Ah, denial... that was turning into a good friend recently. Adam shrugged as he stood and emptied his cup. "Regret's a bitch to live with." was all he said. As Rishab stretched and turned to watch Madhu climb into her tent ahead of Abby. "Looks like they're gonna be there for a while."

"Yeah," Adam shook his head, "when they get started... it can take hours for them to stop talking. They met at while volunteering and Abby immediately fell in love with her. She took Madhu under her wing and very soon Madhu turned her into a chatterbox too and from that point on... Man, they'll find something to talk about for hours every damn day."

"But I guess that's a woman thing in general," Rishab added. "Yeah, I think you're right about that." He sat down on the stool Abby had been using and scratched his chin as he debated the intelligence of what he was about to do. "What do you think I should do?" he asked after several minutes of internal debate.

Adam considered the question for a while and then answered, " Madhu is not like the average girl. You haven't gotten to know all the facets of her life. If I were in your place I would take it slow. Get to know her first, learn her likes, dislikes, her way of thinking. Be her friend."

Interesting... but definitely worth considering. "Those are some important points. Never thought I would take these kinda pointers from someone studying law. Damn.. I can no longer call you Adumb or Dum-Dum in my head can I?" He said biting back a grin.

"Hey!! We're cool like the Boston Legal people." (FYI - Boston Legal is an American Legal Drama - TV Show) Rishab laughed and slapped Adam on the back. "Yeah, you guys are pretty cool."

"So, what about you? What do ya do when you're not building your business empire?" Rishab shrugged. "I spend most of my free time on the mountain." Keeping busy was the only way to keep his mind occupied and off of everything he was missing in his life. "When I'm not up here I'm either working my ass off, painting or going out for the occasional date, which I haven't done for months."

"So, no current girlfriend?" "No..." "Well there used to be someone I saw on occasion."

Adam smirked. That didn't sound like anything really serious. "Bet you have a lot of girls who're all too willing to throw themselves at you."

"There's no shortage of opportunities." He shrugged one shoulder. "They come and go..." he smirked. "But nothing worth getting serious about. Most of those girls were good enough for a night, but if you have to spend much time with them and actually talk to them," he made a face.

Adam laughed. "Yeah, not sure about the women. But I can sure say the same about the guys."
