You cannot come dressed in rags, shaggy and disheveled and expect the world to be wowed away by your acting skills alone - except if you are auditioning for the role of a beggar! Even Rani in KKHH, Vidya in Parineeta, Bhool Bhulaiyya or TDP and Kajol (DDLJ, KKKG etc) had to change their style statements to fit into the B-town. Not so good looking actors like Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt etc ... work on their physique, dress with care and act well to fit in.

Acting well IS important though...you cannot sustain the industry on good looks alone - otherwise 100s of beefed up males and plastic surgery-ied females would be rich and famous. But that is not so. If one can couple good acting with an attractive and charming persona, then statistics say that those actors are successful.
