Hi all!
I'm going to be traveling this weekend and this is a very hurried update so I apologize for that- but this is the final stretch and the next chapter will be the last. Please read and comment!
Chapter 8
"May the Gods bless you." Dadima intoned as Madhu and RK bent to touch her feet, RK rolling his eyes discreetly at the melodrama. Madhu jabbed him with her elbow subtly as they stood up, though she could not disguise her tears as her mother moved forward to bid her farewell.
"Take care of yourself, my child." Padmini murmured, pressing a kiss on Madhu's smooth brow. "Be happy and prosperous for the rest of time."
"She's not going to Mars." RK's voice interrupted the tender moment. "In fact, if I remember correctly, Mumbai is not that far away." He continued.
Padmini sighed at her strange son-in-law. "Madhu is no longer ours, RK. She is yours. As her mother, I have the right to mourn that."
"And you have the obligation to sit and listen to it." Yuvraj sotto whispered to RK.
RK grimaced, leading his wife to let out a tear-stained laugh from her mother's arms.
"Lets go." She said finally, leaving her mother's embrace reluctantly. RK nodded, solemly meeting his mother-in-law's eyes.
"I'll take care of her." He promised.
Padmini nodded in return.

"So you live with your mother, and her new family." Madhu commented, taking note of the fast passing scenery. RK scowled at the statement, nodding unhappily.
"You should also know that my sister in law was my ex…"
"Ex…?" Madhu questioned, confused.
"Ex." RK replied firmly. "She might talk a lot of rubbish towards you. Just ignore her and she'll go away."
"You know, RK." Madhu said, irritated at his dithering. "I think I would be better prepared to meet your family if you told me more about them. You've talked about your father but never…"
"They are not my family." RK interrupted her harshly. "They are burdens that my mother had seen fit to latch on to herself. But they have nothing to do with me."
"They live with you." Was the soft answer.
"But I endure them. As you will. But you won't interact with them Madhu. You are my wife. You have no relations with those Bhatia's. Including the woman who bore me."
Madhu closed her eyes, frustrated at her new husband's attitude. She resolved to meet this new family with an open mind. At the same time she didn't want to argue with RK without a good reason.
"Alright." She said gently, snuggling into his arms, closing her eyes as his scent surrounded her.

The resolution to keep an open mind lasted only as long as her step-brother in law kept his mouth shut. The minute Madhu heard Sikandar Bhatia speak all her good intentions went flying out the window.
"Wow." He whistled, ignoring the fuming looks both husband and wife shot him. "She's hotter than the picture on TV. Man, RK! How did you find such a treasure in the middle of nowhere?"
"Sikky, don't try to dialogue. It's only good for people who can actually deliver them." RK gritted out caustically. He had never held much anger towards his step-brother, even when Dipali married him. But the way Sikky was watching Madhu made RK's blood boil.
For her part Madhu was tired and Sikky's talk was not helping her headache. First they had been accosted by papparazi the minute they entered Mumbai (she had suspicions they had been following since Madhu and RK had left Motihari). The evasive manuvers the driver had pulled off had left her feeling nauseaus. Then, to top that off, as they had come closer to his house RK had started feeling more belligerent, barking of instructions on how she should act around his not-family (which boiled down to: Madhu, you must ignore them.). Needless to say, Madhubala Rishab Kundra was not in a good mood.
"You have to forgive us RK." The slitering tones of her sister-in-law broke her out of her musings. "We were just so shocked that you managed to find someone. From a small, Podunk, hick town also." The last sentence was said with a sneer, Dipali's gaze over Madhubala making it clear that it was not a compliment.
Madhu snapped.
"You must excuse me." She said tightly. "But manners are something we are taught to regard very highly in my small, Podunk, hick, village. Which means introductions. I'm RK's wife- Madhubala Rishab Kundra. Who are you again? The housekeeper?"
Dipali went red with anger as RK guffawed.
"I'm Sikky's wife." She said, tossing her hair.
"Well, then, maybe you can tell your husband he should watch what is coming out of his mouth. It reflects so badly on a wife when she can't manage her husband, doesn't it?" Madhu replied in a saccharine tone.
Let it be said that Madhu did not actually believe a word of what she was saying. But Dipali Bhatia had pushed all the wrong buttons and all Madhu wanted to do was to see her lose her composure.
And she succeeded.
"You-!" Dipali was interrupted by Radha and Kuku Bhatia entering the room. RK sighed and rolled his eyes at the tears in Radha's.
"Drama, scene 2" He muttered to Madhu.
"Rishu." Radha said, coming close to him. He remained poker faced as she made to hug him, and she hesitated, turning instead to Madhu, who made to touch her feet.
"RK!" She hissed as she was hauled upwards instead.
"I told you that she is nothing to you!" He hissed back. Madhu rolled her eyes, pinching his wrist subtly to get him to let her go. He did so.
"As I told Dipali, I was raised with manners. Whatever you think she is your mother and my elder. Now let me take her blessings."
RK scowled as Madhu went and touched Radha's feet, getting blessings from her teary eyed mother in law. However as her step father in law made to bless her, RK stopped him.
"She is not related to you in any way." He said heatedly. Madhu remained silent, knowing that she had to pick and choose her battles. "So she's not getting any blessings from you." RK contined. "They would be tainted anyway, coming from such a man." He finished with a sneer.
Kuku Bhatia remained unaffected outwardly, though inwardly he seethed.
"Well, we've organized a reception tomorrow night in celebration of your marriage. Perhaps you'll say a few words to make sure there are no misunderstandings as to why we were not invited to the wedding."
"Whatever." RK muttered, taking Madhu's hand and moving up the stairs.
"RK!"
"Oh don't worry." RK drawled. "I would never miss a party thrown in my honor Mr. Kuku Bhatia. Rest assured, I'll make it a night to remember."
Taking Madhu in his arms, smiling at her smothered laugh, he took her up the stairs.

Well, are you also planning to end this FF?
