Part II
Naina looked through the window.
And - yes - Captain was lying there with his back towards the window, hands and leg spread out.
Naina's heart stopped beating.
Oh God. Is he ......
She could not even think the dreaded word - dead.
Naina looked down and signaled to Alekh that she has found Rajveer sir. Alekh nodded an dwaited. He knew he must wait and give some time to the lovers alone.
Naina cut the wire mesh which protected the window by her the knife out of her toolbox and jumped into the room.
She quickly ran to the door and bolted it from inside.
She strode back to Rajveer and slowly sat beside him.
She tried to feel his pulse - the soft up and down movement of the artery in his hand. She missed it. Her throat dried up, she wanted to scream.....
She remembered that fatal day on the truck- Rajveer lying on the floor, wounded by the bullet from her gun. Then she had kicked him back to sense.
Now she held him softly and carefully turned him over on his back. While doing that she felt the life in him. She unbuttoned his shirt and jacket, loosened his belt and holding him tightly, put her left ear on his chest.
Yes, she could here the heartbeats. Rajveer was a very strong man and could endure a lot. Naina's eyes were filled with tears, tears of joy as Raj was still alive, tears of sorrow as he was badly hurt and in danger, tears of guilt as she remembered the encounter on the truck, tears of remorse as she understood Rajveer's state was linked to something to do with the red box and tears of relief as now she would be able to save him. She lovingly caressed Raj moving her hands over his head and shoulder.
Naina raised Raj's head very carefully and put it on her lap. She felt the wet sticky blood on his hair. Two drops of tear fell on Rajveer's closed eyelids.
She took out the gauze roll from her bag, moistened little bit of it and with great care rubbed the blood out from his hair. She thanked Dr. Shalini for teaching them the first aid techniques so well. She bandaged his wound expertly.
Naina could not take her eyes off Rajveer, cradling his head within her arms, close to her bosom. Love just flowed out of her. She tenderly kissed his forehead and eyelids.
Now that did not bring him back to consciousness.
What should she do?. Will she and Alekh be able to carry him back to the car? Should she call Alekh now?
Should she try kicking him? She smiled, that brought him back to sense out on the truck.
"Main itni buddhu kyun hoon ?, simple si baat mujhe yaad nahin, Sir bhi na, mujhko lattoo barabar bana diya."
Naina quickly took the water bottle out and sprinkled water on Raj's eyes and face while remembering how she threw water on him when driving on the truck with Huda.
That brought Raj back to consciousness. He opened his eyes trying to figure out where he was. The natural alertness of the soldier has not come back yet. But he felt like he was in heaven. He wanted to be in that state forever. He could feel that love was reaching him from every side, from under his head, from his right side, above him was the face which he loved more than anything in the world. He doubted, is he dead? Is this what heaven is like- to be completely encircled by love.
He looked at Naina's eyes and smiled at her.
"Am I dreaming?" Is this really Naina here? He touched Naina's face with his finger.
Naina read her lover's mind like an ABC book. "Yes Sir it is me and You were very badly hurt. '
That brought Rajveer back to complete alertness and clear mind. Naina understood and loosened her grip. Rajveer quickly got up. "Naina we have to go from here, Quick"
Naina got up too and stood in front of Raj. This time she was determined. She must hear those three little words out from him.
Rajveer started to button up his shirt but his fingers were not steady yet. He kept on fidgeting with the buttons. Seeing that Naina came forward, "May I?" she said aloud, "have the pleasure " – silently to herself.
Raj gave up to her. Naina put the buttons one by one starting from the bottom, moving upwards. As she moved upwards, her hands began to shake too. She became conscious of being so close to him, her cheeks started to get a crimson hue.
The tired face, ruffled hair, tear-dried eyes, sweaty body and to top it all the sudden rosy cheeks - Naina was looking beautiful. Raj was astounded by her beauty; this is not the sari-clad made-up Naina whom he praised few days ago. This beauty is bestowed by nature to every woman and only beheld and admired by her very own mate.
Raj could not take his eyes off her. He wanted to take her in his arms, kiss her and tell her – "Naina, precious, I love you ".
Naina looked up at his eyes, her fingers still fiddling with the top button. She could read passion, love and admiration in his eyes. Her woman's intuition told her he loves her.
"Lekin wo izhaar kyun nahin kar dete ? !", she pondered.
"Darpok kahin ka „", - aisa achchha soldier kaise bana unhone ?" Naina said to herself.
The moment of confession was about to come ….but suddenly there was some kind of sound outside the door. Quickly Raj pulled Naina to the window, threw the rope down, and signaled to Alekh. He first let Naina down and then he slid down the rope. Both of them landed on the ground safely. Raj patted Alekh and all three of them crawled to a nearby bush.
Raj whispered to Alekh and Naina, " We must get out from here as quickly as possible. I have some important documents hidden somewhere by the road where I have left my jeep, we must get those papers immediately and return to KMA, By the way how have you come to this place"
"By your jeep, Sir" stated Alekh.
Raj raised his eyebrows and gave a quizzical look. Naina quickly explained how thy came across his jeep. While telling about the handkerchief she started to blush and stammer. Raj put a hand on head and said, " Cadet Singh, you are a brave girl".
"And Naina, Sir? Isn't she brave too?" Naina quipped.
Rajveer was little taken aback and looked straight into Naina's eyes. He saw her determination reflected in her eyes and voice. He knew he has to face the "encounter" soon - the encounter of love. It is strange how a brave soldier like him who is never afraid of any fierce battle or dangerous confrontation with the deadliest enemy can be so helpless where love is concerned!!
Three of them crossed the boundary wall. Raj looked back at the bungalow. He knew he would return soon. But first thing first – Navin must get his honor back and for that to get the hidden documents is critical.
Alekh showed them the way back to the jeep. Raj tried to climb up to the driver's seat. But Alekh stopped him " Aap ko bahut chot lagi hai, aaram ki zarorat hai,. back seat pe jaiye, main jaanta hoon kahan se hum ye jeep churai , Main drive karu.
Raj consented and went to the backseat. When Naina climbed to the seat next to Alekh's , " Tu pichhe ja, Sir ki teri zarurat hai ," Alekh winked at Naina ". Nail smiled shyly but willingly skipped to the rear seat.
As the jeep went rolling over the uneven road, Raj could feel the pain in his wound on head. He raised his hand to hold the wound spot. The bandage is newly soaked with blood. Naina patting her shoulder said to him , " Aap lait jaiye Sir. "
Rajveer hesitated., "Rahne do Naina, aisa chakkar a giya, abhi thik ho jayega. "
Naina did not listen. She just pulled Raj's arm and literally forced his head on her shoulder. She held him close., her cheek lightly touching his hair and wound.
Raj knew he was entering the no-return zone. But he also willingly surrendered to the spirit of Naina. He relished every bit of his closeness to Naina.
At last they came to the point from where Alekh and Naina got the jeep. Alekh turned back, " Sir hum aa……." ,
He saw Raj and Naina sleeping very peacefully against each other. Raj's head was against Naina's shoulder, his left hand behind her back and with his right hand was loosely clasped in Naina's hands. Naina's head was resting on Raj's head. Both their faces were calm but radiant with love and peace. It was a heavenly sight.
Alekh thought of not disturbing them right now. He got down from the jeep and walked away into the bushes.
The swaying of the running jeep stopped and woke up Raj. He was feeling very happy but apprehensive. . He knew Naina loved him as much he loved her. He knew Naina was waiting for him to tell her that he loves her. .He gently took his right hand away from Naina's grip. Gently giving support to Naina's head he moved his head from her shoulder. The short nap had invigorated him and he felt much better now.
Now it was his turn to put Naina's head on his shoulder and to hold her close. He kissed her forehead, the first kiss ever – the first touch of his lips on her skin. He shivered . He has never felt like this before. Yes, he had had his share of routine adventures with young girls that every normal and healthy young man has. But this was something special, on one hand he loved Naina, wanted to protect her from any evil, on the other, he wanted to enjoy touching her, kissing her , caressing her.
Touch of lips was like an electric shock pierced through Naina's nervse. "Jhatka laga diya." She woke up and instinctively looked up to him, tilting her face, her lips quivering with expectation just below his lips. Each could feel the warmth of other's breathing.
Raj encircled her within his arms, pulling her closer, closer, till their lips almost touched.
Raj whispered, " Naina . main tumse bahut pyar….nahin … tum mujse...nahi i mean mai tumse....no...hum dono ek doosre se....pyar....i mean pyar hum dono se........," he started to stammer.
Naina shied away - "Aap na…." She turned away – smiling to herself ," Yeh to kabhi nahin sudhrega."
" Main tumse bahut pyar karta hoon – I love you naina ," Raj's desperate voice was distinct in the calm wilderness.
The sound of his own voice strengthened Rajveer and rendered him courage. . "Naina , I love you ."
Naina turned into his invited arms. "I love you too" was all she could say.
Raj again kissed her forehead and cheeks.
This part is viewer's imagination. The camera was only on RAj's back. He tilted Naina's face towards him with his right hand under her chin. And moved his face closer to hers. Naina's heart began to beat very fast. As she closed her eyes, she felt his warn lips touching her lips . At first it was a light touch - almost a peck. Then Raj's lips pressed hard on hers and Naina got lost in a different world ,yet unexplored by her.
We see Alekh approaching Alekh approaching towards them brought them back to reality.
