Doing it differently

(Posted on 15 December 2006)

It might just turn out to be the year of the dark horse. If someone had, at the beginning of 2006, said that Sony's new sibling Sab, would turn out to be a more interesting effort at programming than Star's relatively new offspring Star One, I would not have taken it seriously.

But as the year draws to a close, I realised that I have been turning more to Sab for 'different' programming. On the other hand, Star One, that started with similar potential, now seems cluttered and burdened with the Nimmos, the Saathi Res and Paraya Dhans. It's the rare occasion when I turn to the channel for a few laughs (The Comedy Show Ha Ha Ha or a Naya Office Office). Sab, on the other hand, has attempted to carve its own image, although the ratings may not have started flowing in.

Tony and Deeya Singh's Left Right Left is a good example. It's racy, does not meander into meaningless sub-plots, the cast is good looking and acts reasonably well. The story, about life at a military academy has not succumbed to being merely a love story, and the stunts are very real. This week, Shweta Salve had to hang upside down swinging from a tree branch during a training programme gone sour, till she is rescued by a colleague. There were no excruciating close up shots, no ear splitting sound effects. Shot straight, nevertheless, the episode had potential to make you sit right through it.

Then, there is the newly launched Mohalla Mohabbatwala. Those who have watched Star Bestsellers may sense deja vu, watching this repackaged version of the long dead, lamented Nukkad. No wonder, since Mohalla is directed by filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia, who made some of the most enjoyable Bestsellers.

Dhulia's forte is portraying the small town common man's daily life, tinging it with wry humour. It works well, particularly as Dhulia is able to draw out good performances from lesser known actors, giving the show a realistic feel. Mohalla, true to its name, is currently tracing the love stories of a band of youngsters living their life out in a lane that could be anywhere in Hyderabad or Haryana. People move about on cycles, drink lassi and converge at hair cutting saloons for a chat. A lot better than watching overdone aunties living dreary lives in unreal mansions.

The only show that didn't click on Sab was the ill fated Twinkle Beauty Parlour, where the channel apparently succumbed to commercial demands. The plot went awry after the original cast was dumped and the show just went downhill from there. But Twinkle was the most promising of the lot, with the potential to tap endless emotions that affect any small town woman. It needed time to flower, but perhaps the channel didn't have that much time to spare.

Although its comedy band needs a bit of tightening, a couple more shows on original themes, and Sab could become the channel the discerning viewer has been waiting for.

Good Samaritan Aparna!

Being afraid of dogs need not be a deterrent to help a hapless canine. This was proved when Aparna Tilak found a wounded Labrador pup, ill-treated by its owners, lying in the colony where she stays. She picked it up and went searching for the right person to take care of the puppy.

Says a concerned Aparna, "I was so furious as to how could anyone treat a small, helpless animal like that. So, I called up some so-called animal lovers and when they did not respond, I thought of Anju Mahendroo who works for the animal society but I could not reach her. Then it suddenly struck me that Chandana Sharma of Yeh Dil Chahe More fame, is a dog lover."

Now, after handing over the injured pup to Chandana, Aparna is at peace, as she heaves a sigh of relief, "at least the dog is in safe and loving custody!"

We say the pup was lucky to have under Aparna's purview or else.

Shveta Salve: The new stunt women?

Shveta Salve is quite an action girl. Recently in her show SAB's Left Right Left, the dame herself pulled off a few stunts for an action sequence. Shveta has always been a little adventurous and sporty since childhood. And now she is also doing dangerous stunts and moves without taking the help of any double. "When we were supposed to do this shot, I was pretty fascinated. I thought why not I try it out myself. And that was it, I ended up actually doing it." says Shveta. Way to go Shveta, from acting to dancing to stunts now. You have never stopped surprising us.

Biggest no shows of 2006
By: the Hitlist team
December 27, 2006

Different. Ground-breaking. Unusual. These were just some of the many adjectives that were used to describe these shows. But in the end, they all towed the 'been there-done that' line and ended up as the biggest turkeys of the year.

Fame X

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs
9 pm, Friday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Just like Indian Idol 2 couldn't recreate the magic of its first season, Fame X too failed in its new avatar. Trying too hard to be hip, the show fell flat in entertaining the audience in any way. The set is tacky, the judges (Daler Mehendi, Ganesh Hegde) are icy cold and the contestants too have nothing to cheer about.

How long before it shuts: With zero interest from viewers, it shouldn't be long before this Fame wraps up its game!

Left Right Left

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs,
9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Rajeev Khandelwal stepped out his comfy Sujal shoes and turned to a fresh concept to boost his sagging career. Set against the backdrop of a military school with six new faces, LRL was a welcome change for those bravely suffering saas bahu shows.

Making a debut with some stellar ratings, the show soon became tangled in the confusion of taking a risk as a youth show or playing it safe with the usual drama.

How long before it shuts: In spite of trying new formulas and twisting the plot, LRL hasn't been able to win over the audience it wooed in the beginning.

Twinkle Beauty Parlour

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Off air

Kyun nahin chala: Coming from the same production house that brought us Remix, this show was definitely well publicised, to say the least! The channel went on a full throttle promotion and marketing strategy with giant billboards plastered all over the city showing mustachioed women waiting for Twinkle's parlour to open.

After it started, the audience realised there was nothing funny about this series. Neither seriously dramatic nor witty, the channel gave up on this baby even before the audience could make their decision.
How long before it shuts: The show went off air within six months.

Karam Apna Apna

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Mon-Thurs, 9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Touted as Balaji's next big show after Kavyanjali, this drama set against the backdrop of Kolkata, looks like it is suffering from a Parineeta hangover. Starting off on a fresh note, the show didn't take too long to walk the hackneyed road of every other K-soap. There seems to be an ongoing fight between the background music and characters to decide who is the loudest!

How long before it shuts: With Iqbal Khan already out of the show, it won't be long before the audience gives its final verdict on the karam of this show.

Akela

Saw it on: Sony
Time-table: Saturday, 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Promising to be thriller of sorts, Akela (like its name suggests) became a lone ranger in the slot it was put in. Neither was it engrossing nor did Sudhansu Pandey lend any charm to the project.

How long before it shuts: The buzz is that Sony plans to pull the plug off this turkey soon.

Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Sunday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Smriti Iraani breaking out of her Tulsi image to attempt something new was the biggest reason to tune in to this show. Starting off on a fresh note with an interesting ensemble cast, the soap soon lost its charm somewhere down the line. The weekend time slot also hampered it from reaching a wider audience.

How long before it shuts: We don't think this show will be around this time next year.

The gloves are off

Ranjib Mazumder

Rajeev Khandelwal and Vikas Manaktala in Left Right Left

The set of Left Right Left recently turned into a battlefield while shooting a boxing sequence. Actors Rajeev Khandelwal aka Rajveer and Vikas Manaktala aka Huda kept hitting each other even after the shot was over. The platform, where they fought, broke down twice and as a result, the shooting continued for two days.

Anshuman Singh, the director of the show recalls, "It was supposed to be a kickboxing match between Rajeev and Vikas. With several people cheering for the two contestants, nobody could hear me say 'cut', and the actors continued with their fighting act. Sometimes, I had to jump into the ring to ask them to stop. But every time, the noise made my task difficult."

So, how difficult was it shooting the sequence? "It was not a choreographed scene, and therefore looked real. But, having to jump into the ring to say 'cut' was the worst part," he adds.

The funniest part was that the platform broke down twice while the sequence was being shot. Says an amused Anshuman, "I think that the platform was not built properly; the planks were weak. Vikas weighs around 70 kilos; the platform could not bear their weights together."

Was he miffed? "Sometimes, I felt frustrated for the mishaps. But, I was happy with the final result," he says.

It was a year of debuts. When it came to making an impact on television's prime time these youngsters were the clear winners. A.L. Choughule presents the year's best debutants who have made a mark.

Mouni Roy
As Krishna Tulsi she is the mini version of Kyunki's powerful Tulsi. Ekta found her second Tulsi in Mouni Roy, a post-graduate in mass communication, when she went for a Balaji audition to Delhi. "I was keen on doing theatre and choreography," she says. But the audition helped her get a role in a show that was to be launched a few months later. But Ekta decided to cast her as Krishna Tulsi. "I am really lucky to get such an important role in a popular serial. Destiny has played a major role in it," says Mouni adding, "Whatever success I have got so far has made me more confident."

Priya Badlani

The bratty, selfish, impulsive and demanding Ananya Shroff of Jab Love Hua who lands up in a village may have discovered true love in the village bumpkin Raghu. But it's for sure that Priya Badlani is a successful television debutant. A popular face in the world of advertising, Priya says modelled for the Coke commercial with Aamir Khan which was the turning point in her life. "Ashutosh Gowarikar, who directed the ad told me to take up acting. says Priya adding, "Acting gives me a high. It's my life, it keeps me alive," she says.

Rajashree Thakur
Quite unexpectedly she came and conquered it all. With her dusky complexion and average looks, she became the face of Zee's prime time simply because her personality suited the character and the story. Saloni, the protagonist of Saath Phere, became the darling of viewers. And Rajshree Thakur who had done an Indo-French film Hawa Aane De before Saloni's role came her way became a television star overnight. "Purnedu Shekhar, the serial's writer, approached me to play Saloni," recalls Rajshree, adding that she did not expect so much name, fame and success. "But behind the success there is lot of hard work. I have done my job very sincerely and genuinely. When you work hard success follows," she says.

Gauri Negudkar

A post-graduate in chemistry, Gauri also wanted to do her doctorate in the subject. She had acted in a National award-winning Marathi film Uttarayan which made Gauri gravitate towards acting. "I decided to work on television because I was getting a lot of offers," says Gauri who chose Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan for her television debut.

Prachi Desai
She is soap queen Ekta Kapoor's major discovery who has made her presence felt on prime time television this year. "It's very rare that a starter gets to play the lead role in Ekta's serial. I didn't even dream about it," gushes the petite starlet who had not even dreamt of playing the lead role of Bani in Kasamh Se. In fact, she gave her first audition for the role in Pune where she was studying for her HSC exams. But when Balaji called she couldn't even wait till she finished her higher secondary exams. "I got something for which people struggle for years. It's a dream-come-true for me," says Prachi.

Pallavi Subhash

Like Rajshree Pallavi Subhash is yet another example of unexpected prime time success. She was happy doing regional theatre and television till Ekta Kapoor who was desperately hunting for an actor to play Gauri in Karam Apna Apna saw her in a miniscule role in Tumhari Disha. Ekta didn't wait and Pallavi didn't get much time to think before saying yes. "It was as if I was destined to play Gauri," smiles Pallavi who had never imagined that a central role will come her way in a Balaji show without even trying for it. "I get recognised easily and people want to talk to me which was not the case before," she smiles. "My phone keeps buzzing and known and unknown relatives visit my home." Her life has changed completely. "I go home only to sleep. There is no time to meet my friends but I'm not complaining," says Pallavi.

Pulkit Samrat

Post-generation leap, as Laksh he plays the central character in Kyunki's third generation of spoilt brats. Sahil and Ganga's son, in terms of character importance Laksh is only next to Mihir. A graduate in advertising Pulkit Samrat who plays Laksh gave an audition for the role in Delhi. The next thing he did was to travel to Mumbai to play the role. "There was lot of pressure in the beginning but now I have got used to working in a daily. It is great fun," says the young actor ading, "But this is just the beginning and I have a long way to go. Right now I am concentrating on my role totally. Laksh is a very important character and I am doing my best to do justice to it. Television is here to stay so there will be no dearth of work," he quips.

Vikas Manaktala

He believes in being at the right place at the right time. As a fashion model he has walked on the ramp besides doing quite a few commercials, including the prestigious Reid and Taylor with Amitabh Bachchan. Vikas was getting lot of offers for serials. "There was no dearth of roles for me but I wasn't very keen on working in serials," he says. Having rejected several roles he found the role of Hooda in Left Right Left appealing and interesting. "But I had to give several auditions before I was finalised for the character," reveals the actor who has seen his popularity soaring in the last couple of months. "This is just the first step. There is a long road ahead and I will make my moves slowly and wisely," he adds.

How Aparna Tilak rescued a pup...

The actor, with help from friends, found a home for an abandoned dog

HARSHADA REGE

In spite of not being an ardent animal lover, actor Aparna Tilak felt the need to intervne when she found that a friend of hers was mistreating his pet dog. "My friend's girlfriend gifted him a puppy on his birthday, but she didn't find out whether his family was ready to make place for a pet," she fumes. Two days later, a common friend called Aparna to check if any one would adopt the puppy. "That's when I got to know that the dog was kept in a room for long hours. And when I asked them to give me the dog they refused. Finally, we managed to convince them," says Aparna, who then called friend Chandana Sharma for help. SInce the actor didn't know what to feed the pup, she called friend and actor Shveta Salve for help. "Shveta has pets at home, so she knows a lot about dog food and stuff like that. She helped me out with buying the correct food," says Aparna Speaking about the incident Chandana Sharma says, "I am a bit uncomfortable talking about this as it's a part of my life. There are many volunteers who are doing such acts selflessly." She adds, "But yes, we have managed to find a house for the dog and he is doing well now." Aparna adds that she would like to be involved in such causes in the future too. "I think that when one does something without expecting anything in return, it gives one immense joy. But I can't take credit for it because Chandana and Shveta helped me out," she says.

Priya Arya's maun vrat
By: Vickey Lalwani
January 4, 2007

Sshhhhhh!
Priya Arya
Unlike her contemporaries who started 2007 with either revelry or work, TV actress Priya Arya (Lolita Sen of Left Right Left) began the New Year in a quiet note.

The actress left for Igatpuri to undergo a 10-day course at the Vipassana Research Institute.

It's a course of 15 days where the participants are cut off from the rest of the world.

There are no papers, no music, no telephone and no conversation either. Meditation and introspection is what Vipassana is all about.

Liar, liar

This will be Priya's second attempt at the same institute. Seven months ago, she had joined the same course but had given up and returned after just three days. "I lied to them saying a family member was not well and they should let me go.

I was not able to handle it beyond two days. I had even sneaked in my cell phone and used it very often. In short, I was not observing the silence one is required to. It is very tough out there, but this time, I am determined to make it happen," says Priya candidly.

The actress further informs, "Meditation has always intrigued me and I have learnt a lot of techniques which I practise on and off — with successful and unsuccessful results. Now I am looking for something else. So I decided to give Vipassana another shot and I filled up the form."

Is guilt the reason behind her second visit? Pat comes the reply, "I underwent a lot of suffering when I returned from there last time. I knew I had done a wrong thing.

I went into a 15-day deep meditation to cleanse that guilt. I am going back not in repentance, but with the aim of discovering myself in me, which comes only by observing complete silence and being just with yourself."

Cleansing act

Elaborating on the need of Vipassana, Priya says, "There's so much of unnecessary chattering over here. The wandering of the mind, even in the negative direction, happens frequently.

So why not have 10 days in your life when you completely surrender your materialistic wants? Add the intake of healthy food and the strict regime of getting up at 4 am and going off to sleep by 9.30 pm, makes all the more sense.

Over and above, I have become a bit aggressive and hot-tempered, which I think would be eliminated by Vipassana."

Priya will be in Igatpuri from January 4 to 13. "My track in LRL is not happening these days. So I might as well go now. I have informed the production officials and taken their permission," she concludes.

About Vipassana

Vipassana meditation is a technique, which was taught by Gautam Buddha about 2,500 years ago. It was Vipassana that led him on the path of Nirvana or salvation, the ultimate aim of humankind.

After Buddha, S N Goenka, an Indian industrialist residing in Myanmar, rediscovered the technique. He came across it accidentally. In 1969, he began a mission to spread Vipassana along with his 11 disciples.

Today, there are over 30 established centres and many more in the making around the world. Thousands of people have benefitted from the technique.

Rajeev, Aamna in splitsville
By: Sandipan Dalal
January 8, 2007

Aamna Shariff and Rajeev Khandelwal

After a whirlwind courtship that started on the sets of their debut serial Kahiin To Hoga, Aamna Shariff and Rajeev Khandelwal are in splitsville.

The couple may not have spoken about their relationship in print, but there is no denying their chemistry, their regular escapades and Sunday shopping sprees together.

However, there was trouble in paradise after Rajeev landed a role on the SAB show, Left Right Left. Apparently, his special bonding with co-star Priyanka Bassi (Naina) didn't go down well with Aamna.

Says a reliable source, "Rajeev is very popular on the sets. He has his own gang of friends and hangs out with them throughout the day. Aamna is no longer a visitor on the sets. All is not well between them."

Breaking the rules

Recently, the couple even refused to attend a New Year's bash at a friend's place thanks to their differences. Says a close friend of the couple, "Of late, Aamna and Rajeev have been having major differences of opinion.

Unable to come to terms with it, they decided not to be together for New Year's Eve. Aamna is tired of following Rajeev's rules about keeping their relationship under wraps."

Says another actor friend, "Aamna is a very private person. Even though she has never acknowledged her romance with Rajeev, it was evident that she was in love. Now that they have broken up, Aamna is finding solace in her close friends."

Project shelved

The biggest indicator of the romance going downhill is the reduction in the number of calls Rajeev gets from Aamna. Informs a crew member of Left Right Left, "She used to call him throughout the day.

Now, he is hardly ever on the phone. Rajeev spends more time with his co-stars than chatting with Aamna the way he used to until sometime ago."

What's more, the couple are not longer part of Hum Do Aur Hamare Nauh, scheduled to air in April. The couple, who had shot for a pilot episode together, has begged out of the project now.
