Hi Rosie, many apologies for a late response, although have to admit many a times I was tempted to peek into your post, but was involved in doing my FF. However now that I have had the chance to read your brilliant post, may I say that it an interesting exposition of Ganpat's character.
Ganapat to me than is one such character who is not an out and out offender due to which he slips out of the net. Yet we know he is of ill worth and charred with a degree of disrepute, due to his misdemeanours. People like Ganpat can be easily identified in various stratum of societies and cultures. Such a man tends to prey on the vulnerable to lead a comfortable life. To make an honest living is out weighed by the desire to live off others. In short such a character tends to sponge of the available vulnerable source. Such a character tends to be free of moral qualms and issues of integrity, thus having the guarantee, that others around him would continue to cater to his wants and needs. Such a character as can be seen in Ganpat, within their own living environment can also be deemed as the man of the household, living with a possible trauma of unemployment, which his wife and step daughter support him to deal with. Such a person with parasite like tendencies also have certain weakness of character that becomes evident more so in a sudden change of circumstance i.e. losing their job, which then leads them to grasp easy options such as a variety of addictions , as we see in Ganapat and his alcohol issue. But because he is inherently one who would rather have someone else carry his burden he continues to take each day as it comes. So although, Ganpat is not a likable character at all, yet to me he is very credible , for whom I could say, "oh him I know him he is one of those who in simple terms in my language is " a bagherat ju apne biwi ke kamiye pe pal raha hai"...
Thank you Rosie for an excellent characterisation, enjoyed it thoroughly. Much love xx hammie.
