"Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything."
William Shakespeare (As You Like It Act 2, scene 1, 12'17)
These thought provoking lines may have been used by Duke Senior after being deposed by his villainous brother in As You Like IT to describe his views to his apparent suffering after being exposed to the elements of nature which was in the above case the ugly toad which as per the legend had a "precious jewel" with healing qualities in its temple. The jewel in his case was to be interpreted as profit, freedom from "public haunt" or society and he concluded that in nature lies the powers to heal more eloquently and truly than tongues, books, and sermons as stones turn out to be better company than courtiers.
How very true and what could be more fitting for Nakusha, pushed to the deepest recesses of the wall with a husband not prepared to offer her one single chance to prove her innocence and an evil sister in law who has decided to declare an open war, for nothing, but the sadistic pleasure of seeing her prized enemies fall to the grounds in ashes. From these ashes, will rise tomorrow the resilient fighter (Naku), who plagued and almost broken by the physical, mental and emotional barriers erected by Dutta, had forgotten momentarily that she had it in her to fight for what is the ultimate truth and reason of her existence. And that is her unswerving, long-suffering love for a friend turned foe/husband, who she knows is not weak, physically, but too jaded by a multitude of circumstances, betrayals (including Nakusha's) to be able to see the light any soon. Up to that point, LTL did not deviate from its initial innings of that of the fairy tale telling the story of two individuals wounded to the core because of their implicit trust in their respective families and their inherent goodness.
And the fairy tale continues with Kala (We needed the evil queen) who did not hesitate today to declare her sadistic obsession to destroy all that is apparent and inherent to any form of joys in Dutta's life by revealing her conspiracies to Nakusha. This was great as all of us have been wondering as to what would be the catalyst that would direct Nakusha towards the first steps in her battle to win back the love and trust of her husband. More than love and trust, she has been given the powers to vindicate herself in the face of adversity and we wish that she makes good use of Kala's privileged confessions. We "love you" Kala for the most precious gift you bestowed upon Nakusha. We understand your raging needs to assuage for the loss of your father (right), for having been compelled to suffer in silence the presence of a "brother" who was the son of your dad's involuntary manslaughter by Damodar (you may not agree but we need our own punch bag), for the personal affront of being unmasked in what you consider "your house" and subsequently asked to leave by your own mother.
But you made a fatal mistake and, that started yesterday. You have misjudged the inherent weaknesses of your own surroundings and arrogantly advocate that Nakusha can only flounder because of her total isolation and lack of support from all that matters to her, Dutta, her family, Baaji and AS. You have forgotten that Sudarshan has already expressed his fears and insecurities about being found. Leela loves the good life to the extent that she will not hesitate for a second to let you down and be party to your ultimate disgrace, when you will leave Patil Niwas in tatters. You may have given wings to Roops but not assessed the degree to which she could turn out to be shallow and ineffectual. And lastly you have not reflected on the fact that, however much, Dutta taunts and hurts Baaji, the latter will never give up on his love for the only friend he has ever had, nor have you realised the extent to which he will stretch his loyalty for Dutta by embracing Nakusha as his Vayhini in the real sense, even incur Dutta's wrath for his ultimate salvation. How will the mighty and evil fall one day? We will wait and rejoice on that day.
For all of us, who may not have wanted LTL to adopt the same boring routines of a wife standing up to strike back at her detractors (including her husband) in order to save her love and soul of her life and, eventually, save her husband from a spiral of destruction, this is what Nakusha knows best.
So Arise Nakusha, the Tigress. You are so much "like the toad, ugly (no more)----(would not equate you with venomous) but "Wears yet a precious jewel" in your head, that of the powers of healing . We do not want to see you becoming a martyr at the altar of oversized egos (including that of your husband) and show us that the loyal servant who once revived hope and tenderness in Dutta will prove to be the righteous, dutiful and deserving wife of the Don with a golden heart (in spite of his occasional lapses into a world of utter cruelty).
Adversity brings out the best and the worst in man. Nakusha has proved many times that it has made her stronger and wiser whereas Dutta has always proved us right in our belief that his character is seriously flawed and will always need a genuine support system to realise the importance of those who matter the most in his life.
PS: I was tempted today in indulging in another bout of fantasy by ranting against Sudarshan, the ineffectual Madhu, "Anna's farcical twin" and finally decided that Nakusha needs our support to bring back her (or shall I say our) Gadha.
