When she finished, she had quietly stood up & turned to go when his voice stopped her, "thanks" he whispered. She had been too shocked to say anything & stood there a good minute or two before she quietly nodded her head & left. She knew that he was watching her so she didn't turn around but before she disappeared behind the side wall of the house she slowly turned around to look at him. She didn't expect him to be still watching her so she instantly turned around & when she knew he couldn't see her anymore, she ran into the house.
Continued:
Before she had gone to bed, she had peeked outside her window to look at the stars like every night. For some reason, the stars didn't seem to be shining like they usually did. In fact, there weren't many stars to be seen. She looked at the sky a minute longer & then as she turned her eyes caught sight of Manthan still sitting outside. She squinted her eyes to see what he was still doing there and what she saw shocked her. Was he crying? No, he couldn't be crying, she told herself, he's not the emotional type. But then…why? Why was he crying? She thought over the events that had taken place earlier that day and then it hit her. Karan uncle! She had never seen Karan so close to Manthan before. Is that why he's always so cold with everyone? Because he feels that he has been deprived of his share of love? No wonder I have never seen him share his feelings with anyone. All of a sudden she found herself feeling sorry for him. And she had never thought that of all the things she would feel sympathetic towards the one person she had disliked the most in this house. Her heart told her to go to him & comfort him but her head told her otherwise. She knew Manthan well enough to know that he would hate it if someone saw him this weak. Even though he had been much nicer to most lately, he still wasn't a completely changed man. For one, he still didn't have full control over his anger. So, she stood there watching him instead. She didn't leave till she saw him recover and slowly walk back inside. She heard him pass by her door and peeked out to only catch the sight of his back as he entered his room and closed the door without turning around. Manthan haunted her thoughts that night and thus, she had not been able to sleep well.
KT was still deep in thought watering plants when Tulsi noticed her. As she approached KT she realized that something was on her mind. Smiling, she placed her hand on KT's shoulder. KT snapped out of her thoughts the minute she felt someone's hand and turned around to see Tulsi smiling at her. She smiled back & asked, "Yes Baa? Did you need something?" Tulsi shook her head, "No, I don't need anything but don't you think that you've watered the plants enough? Too much water can hurt them too you know, said Tulsi with a touch of playful sarcasm. KT widened her eyes and realized that Tulsi was right. She had been watering the plants for a while now. She slapped her hand on her forehead and throwing the water hose rushed to turn the water off. She came back to where Tulsi was & smiled, "Sorry Baa. I didn't realize how long I had been doing it." Tulsi replied, "I see that. Now tell me what were you thinking about? It must be something big as my KT never gets distracted this easily." KT smiled back & wondered if she should share her feelings. Maybe she can help me understand Manthan better? KT hesitated a little but when Tulsi prodded her again she said, "I'm confused. I don't know what to think or what to believe." Tulsi smiled and led her to the swing in the garden and sat KT down next to her.
She began, "Now tell me openly what it is that's bothering you." KT smiled as she didn't know where to begin. She finally managed to utter, "Manthan," and looked away. Tulsi was surprised to know that she was thinking about Manthan as she knew that KT disliked him a lot. She pondered over what KT might be trying to ask and then it hit her. "I don't know either KT." KT looked back at her as she continued, "I don't know what brought about this change in him. I myself am desperate to know." Tulsi smiled at KT's surprised expression and said, "Why do you look so surprised? I am like your mother and a mother can always guess what's on her kid's mind." KT smiled back and questioned, "But Baa, why is he or rather was, like what he was? So… rude, cold & obnoxious?" Tulsi smiled sadly & said, "When children don't receive the love & attention that they deserve then they learn to hide their emotions as they constantly are neglected. And they can only do this by pretending that they don't care for anyone or anything. They behave a certain way to get the attention that otherwise they think they won't get." Tulsi looked over to see KT's confused expression & said, "Yes, despite being a son of this big Virani family he was neglected & ignored often. As you know he's younger to Bhoomi and Tanya wanted to give all the love she could to Bhoomi so she didn't feel that Tanya wasn't her mother. Tanya always had a soft corner for Bhoomi even though Bhoomi wasn't her own child. And Karan…well, he was so broken up at that time from Nandini's departure from his life that he was not capable of loving anyone at that time. Slowly he started to love Bhoomi and accepted her as his own daughter. Then a little later Manthan was born. Karan had still not recovered much but Bhoomi was his only hope. And Tanya, she loved Karan and couldn't see him hurt so she spent most of her time making sure Bhoomi was happy so that Karan would find some peace. Tanya loved Manthan too but her blind love for Karan & concern for Bhoomi didn't leave much time for Manthan. Karan also loved & still loves Manthan but I guess he never was able to connect with Manthan as he had with Bhoomi. I guess Karan felt a connection with Nandini through Bhoomi. Pretty soon, Manthan started to feel neglected and started to keep himself distant from everyone. But Bhoomi loved him & protected him. Manthan was initially very jealous of her as she got all the love & attention from both Karan & Tanya and soon started to dislike her but Bhoomi being as stubborn as she is, kept trying to get closer to him. He finally realized that Bhoomi never meant him any harm & actually lover him. He started to get the love & attention from her that he never got from his parents. And on top of that, Nakul & Lakshya always got the love & attention but they felt financially inferior to Manthan. And you know how children are. I guess they used to tease Manthan about how no one loved him or cared for him. I guess Nakul was jealous of the fact that Manthan had everything…new & expensive toys, clothes and the like and I guess Manthan knew of no other way to get back at them then to make fun of their financial status. I guess the dislike between the cousins began there. And since he felt that Bhoomi was the only one showering him with love & attention & actually cared about him, he let his guard down around her. And Bhoomi didn't like Nakul teasing her brother so she also started to dislike Nakul and since Laksh was Nakul's younger brother he had to face Bhoomi's & Manthan's dislike as well. And that is why Manthan is like this, finished Tulsi with a sigh.
KT pondered over what Tulsi had just told her and after a while said, "But Baa, what's the explanation for Manthan's sudden change?" Tulsi looked at KT & smiled, "I don't know either. But whatever it is, it's a good thing. I would be worried if he was being polite but still kept to himself. Initially he did but I am relieved to know that he's opening up now. For example, Joydeep. He used to dislike him so much but now they are like friends. And he's actually helped to bring Bhoomi & Joydeep together. I just pray that the positive change is here to stay. And I will do anything that is possible to keep that smile on his lips, said Tulsi with a smile. Then she continued, "I didn't know that I would be able to see my grandsons embrace each other with love & affection but now I don't feel that I'll have to wait much longer to see that day. I'm sure that Manthan will be able to win Nakul's trust soon and Shantiniketan will be blessed with true family happiness once again.
Tulsi left KT with her thoughts to attend to the afternoon chores. KT had always wondered why only Bhoomi & Manthan were the odd ones out of the rest of the Virani kids, who were all very loving and kind but now she understood. She understood that anyone who supported Nakul or Laksh automatically got free admission to Manthan's hate list and no matter what they couldn't come off it. But then, Manthan had changed. He had apologized not only to the whole family but to Nakul & Laksh exclusively. It was another story that Nakul hadn't forgiven him thinking that Manthan had another plan up his sleeve but KT didn't agree with Nakul. She had always watched Manthan closely, only because she never understood his behavior, and had studied him enough to know that he wasn't playing a game with anyone now. He had changed, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. She smiled at the thought and hoped that maybe Manthan will also be a little nicer towards her too. KT frowned at the thought, "but wasn't he "nicer" last night when I applied that medication? He didn't say anything to me…infact…he said thanks!" KT smiled as she remembered the moment again. And unknown to her someone clicked her picture & captured the innocent look & smile on her face. "I love you KT," whispered the person as he lowered the camera from his face.
