Chapter 33: Main Hoon Na
It took the combined efforts of Nakul, Barkha and Bhumi to shove a verbally and physically uncooperative Manthan into the car. "We cannot take him back to Shantiniketan in this condition, Nakul." "No ofcourse...We'll take him to the Ramada..." "We're taking him to Doshi house." Barkha interjected softly. "Your brother's elopement and wedding news would already be all over the papers tomorrow...Manthan does not need any more adverse publicity." "Its past one'o'clock Barkha, It wouldn't do well to inconvenience your aunt at this time." "It'll be all right.....I have a spare key." Barkha said reassuring Bhumi and Nakul.
Ganga opened the door just as Barkha was about to insert her key into the lock. She looked at Nakul and Bhumi supporting a not-in-his-senses-and-swearing-profusely Manthan and wordlessly pointed to the guest room adjoining the main hall. They put him abed and Barkha put the comforter over him. "You can sleep here tonight....that is if you think you can sleep." Ganga said. Bhumi and Barkha sat down on the sofa, effete. "Thanks auntie....I'll just call Mom and ..." "I did that already...I called up Tanya and told her you all were here with me......You should have let her know sooner." she admonished the trio. "Sorry massi...But we..." "We can discuss this later. Bhumi, you and Barkha can take the master bedroom upstairs. And Nakul, if you don't mind, you can take Barkha's ...Its on the left. " "What about you massi...." "I...I have some papers to read up on....I'm going to be in the library. Goodnight."
Weary though he was, sleep proved elusive for Nakul. He went down to the library to get a book. Ganga was sitting on a chair, her back to him. He tiptoed towards the bookshelf, hoping she wouldn't take notice. But she seemed to be in a different world altogether, staring ahead with a voluminous book open in her lap. Through the solitary, dim light of Ganga's table lamp, Nakul tried to identify the book titles. Unsuccessfully. Frustrated, he had turned to go back. "The classics are on the second shelf, Nakul." Ganga said calmly, facing him now. "And the mysteries right next to them. Unless you've outgrown both genres." "Thanks...." Nakul said, smiling sheepishly now. "Its been a while since I read this.." he said, picking up Shakespeare's Othello.
Nakul did not know what triggered it off but suddenly he was reminded of an incident when he was five. He had been to the circus and had been terrified rather than entertained by the whip yielding ring master and his feral wild cats. His sleep would have been a kaleidoscope of nightmares and frantic shrieks had his 'fairy - mom' not assuaged him with a recurrent, soothing "Don't worry beta...Mama's not going to let any harm come to you....I'm going to be here the whole night....Just sleep .....Main Hoon Na."
"Nakul....would you care for some tea?"Nakul came back to the present with a jerk. "Yes....mint flavored black tea please....". "I'll just put the kettle to boil then...." Ganga left the room, suggesting tea only because she knew that once Nakul's regular bedtime was past, it was near impossible for him to go to sleep. Nakul pensively walked up to the main table in the library with the relucatant cognizance of the fact that his supposedly fictional 'fairy-mom' was no other than the woman he apparently disregarded. Ganga Sahil Virani.
