That’s because she’s not a caricature of what a Gujarati woman sounds like. Anupama is, much like the characters from TMKOC, they hammer in on the stereotypes created by Bollywood about how people from different communities behave, sound like, eat etc.
People have finally been tired of TMKOC and initially they were able to get away with it because it is a comedy show and they included every single stereotype possible, including those aimed at people struggling with obesity by literally having characters whose surname is Haathi… and of course they are obese.
With Anupama the whole thing is so grating because they don’t even make her ex-MIL, who has to be older than her and probably even less educated or maybe not even literate speak like she does. The tone, accent, pitch, the nasally twang are all high pitched and exaggerated intentionally and repeatedly.
Now, there’s no reason for anyone to feel embarrassed about not knowing or being fluent in a different language, particularly English, which was literally imposed upon our country by the British who colonised our country. But the fact is, there is a proper way to speak and people don’t even have to be necessarily scolded, humiliated or corrected repeatedly when they speak something that doesn’t sound correct; if you hear the correct pronunciation of something enough times our brains subconsciously start picking up on it and tries to speak correctly which regular practice or frequent conversations help improve with time until fluency is naturally acquired.
But this show would rather have her double down on the accent than have her ease up on it because god forbid if she doesn’t accomplish her life’s mission - making homemakers feel like they’re worthless and incompetent in every regard - including speaking correctly.
