This made seemed to me. He cared for her that is what he was trying to say and he was just beginning to fall for her. He really did take great care of her.
That scene happened when he had just met Pihu. Interacting with Pihu and seeing Sherlyn also being good with Pihu, he wanted to settle down. Have his own family. Hence he started viewing her differently and seeing the good in her more.

He indeed loved her. It was the basic arrange marriage love. The attachment changing into affection & Love. Just little gestures, concerns, pep talks, smiles, shared joys and tears & promises makes you fall in love.
