Chapter 5

“Salil, how long will it take to get a date for the case hearing? I don’t see a reason for the court to not give us a date anytime soon. We simply must have it soon enough; before someone can sniff out the evidences that we have and that truck-driver comes out of the jail”

Rishabh de-boarded the plane and went to the luggage area after landing in Delhi. He had but two days in his hands to relocate the evidences and ask them about her whereabouts.

Could he be more hurting than he already was?Could life be more unfair to him? Making him stand against Karan, collecting proofs that were all pointing towards his younger brother’s hands too in that night was nothing less than a slow torturous death. Did he actually believe Karan could do it? He didn’t know. He knew nothing anymore about him. Nothing that he could be sure off. But a fair trial was least he could do for her and he would. Even if it meant proving Karan guilty, even legally.

It was almost morning when he woke up from the icy breeze. He must have crashed at Preeta’s apartment after the dinner, he thought. Making his way back to his flat after checking up on her one last time, he checked his phone in case he missed any mails or calls in between. He smiled the moment his screen blinked the temperature outside. Vansh was glad to be back in Delhi. He had missed the chilly weather, the unpredictable rainy nights and would it be weird to say, the pollution and honking noises? Canberra was a nice place, but that city was too quiet for his comfort and he had always been the Delhi boy and nothing soothed him like this place.

As he reached his place, he found the main door of his house unlocked. Odd.

He slowly went inside and as he switched on the lights, to his utmost horror, it looked like a hurricane hit site! Was he ransacked? He rushed to his bedroom but was astounded to see all his belongings, though scattered but present. Whoever had done this did not intend to take any money. Then why was his house rummaged? It was then when his eyes saw the tiny piece of paper that was stuck on the board.

‘Rishabh Loothra has arrived in Delhi. EV170810’

Nothing made sense to him; except for the message. He knew who must have left it, but the rummaging was not his doing and Vansh could bet his life on it. He was glad that he was carrying the pen-drive, which, he had the hunch, was the target; Because not a single thing was missing and yet his entire house was turned upside down. He dialed his assistant’s number quickly“When you left the note, was my home already unlocked and looked like it was looted?” He asked him without losing any second on pleasantries.

It took his assistant good two minutes to wake himself up. It wasn’t like vansh to call him at odd hours and be this panicky.
“ Unlocked? No sir. In-fact, after I left, I rechecked the locks and the spare keys are still with me! What’s wrong?”

“I need you to come in next 30 minutes at my place.” Vansh abruptly cut the call and almost immediately started scribbling the code on his pad to get the hint hidden in it.

It was strange how time flew by and yet made its presence excruciatingly evident. Another day had passed and another morning had arrived. The sun, like a large, grandeur orange fireball in the distance was partially cloaked by the hanging clouds and was lighting the sky. It was a pleasant and beautiful morning. Karan stared at the sun that had made its way up from the horizon, crossing the unidentified mingling boundary of ocean and sky. It was so large that he felt he could almost touch it. It seemed to look at him with an intense glare, knowing that the planet's dependence on it for survival was irreplaceable. He smiled painfully as he remembered his own sunshine. What else was she but that.

He stood at the beach, soaking his feet in the water and the sea-wind made his spine shiver as his skin was hit with nostalgia.

“Preeta!Where are we going? This is physical abuse to wake a man up at 5 In the morning and kidnap him. Also, my head is hurting now. The blindfold is too tight. You knew how awful my mood was yesterday. I am seriously pissed off okay? You cant just forget someone’s birthday and kidnap him the next. This is illegal!”

“Shh Karan.. Please! You are causing me a headache. You’ve got patience of a two year old. Can’t you like wait for a second? Its merely 5 minutes of walking that we have done. Here.”

As she slowly untied the blindfold, karan was astonished by the splendor visuals that laid ahead. The water lapsed and the sea foam danced wildly at their feet before retreating back into the endless expanse. The sun shone through the billowing clouds, kissing their skin. As Preeta came and stood right in front, between the sun and him, the glittering sunrays spread various hues of shiny silvers and golds making her face radiate the kind of beauty that made him spellbound. The world seemed to stand still when she smiled ever so lightly, giving her hand to him. He stared into the shimmering blue and green mosaics that were her eyes. They were so much full of life and brightness that could put the sun behind her to shame. But There was something different in them today. Something very intense they held, that made him want to look away immediately...Or never look away.

For a second, she closed them, and took a deep breath. How extraordinary it was because she was prepping herself to say something and his heart quickened its pace.

“Karan, you might think that I brought you here to cheer you up, and in some way you're right. But, I want to tell you that I never forgot your birthday. I know how mad you get when people don’t wish you but darling I wanted you to know that its not just your birthday but every single day that I am living with you, is special. You are special karan. And its not about just one day. Its about you.You have made my life so beautiful that I don’t find it fair to celebrate just one day to show how grateful I am. Rishabh, aunty everyone had made yesterday so memorable. But I wanted to make the next day just memorable." She looked up directly into his eyes "You have been my best friend for over an year now, and perhaps what I feel for you is much more than that." Karan's heart skipped a beat at those words. “Beach had always been special to me and that’s the reason I brought you here today. What I am going to tell you now has taken every ounce strength and courage. Karan, meeting with you was the best thing that ever happened to me. I don't know how or when, but through all those fights and your bicker and amidst all your silliness I fell in love with you. She knelt down in front of him while her whole body shivered with overwhelming emotions. Preeta took his hand in her, and said " I love you Karan. There’s isn’t anything else that I am so sure off than this. But you want to know the other thing that I know for sure? Besides the fact that I love you?
I’m always going to love you,”

Karan fell down on his knees, numb beyond imagination. That was the last time he had been to this beach two year back on this very day. He soullessly stared at the endless nothingness. He let the wind tussle his hair as it was almost like a human touch. It had been a while since he had been touched so intimately. Strangely today he didn’t feel any pain; no sadness nor the harrowing suffocation.Just completely blank. He looked at the sun again. The sun was almost as orange as the sky, like a ghost almost. Yet even from behind the waves, it seemed to stare at him; a silent ball of wonderment that was really a raging ball of Hellish fury. The very thing that gave warmth, life, light and happiness to so many, it was as destructive to many others. He wondered how tormenting yet beautifully the nature had reciprocated his life. Menacingly silent-horrifyingly stormy.

The sound of sea and birds that chirped blurred in the background as her voice echoed in his ears again. Again. Again.
