Playing with fire for the spotlight

These days even child stars are often required to get into the 'stunt mode' to make the audience sit over the edge of their seats. The idea is to lure viewers and garner greater TPR ratings by the satellite channels.

These days even child stars are often required to get into the 'stunt mode' to make the audience sit over the edge of their seats. The idea is to lure viewers and garner greater TPR ratings by the satellite channels.

Take for instance child star Raunak Bhatia who shot to fame instantly when he appeared on television in Anuradha Prasad's Kum Kum and Ekta Kapoor's Kahin To Hoga. This six-year-old smart kid did not bat his eyelids when he was asked to do stunt scenes on the sets of both these serials. Says Raunak, "I was flying a kite for a particular scene when I had to first hang from the parapet of the bungalow where we were shooting for the serial Kum Kum. Then I had to jump 20 feet down into the hands of Dr Anuj Saxena who played my father in the serial. There were three people who had been employed by the producer to save me in case I had a mishap."

According to the production crew, Raunak amazingly is a thorough professional. Says his father Ravi Bhatia, also a director of several documentaries and ad films. "Raunak also shot for a very dangerous sequence in the serial Kahin To Hoga where he played the son of Mehek. The sequence needed him to get trapped in fire, which breaks out all of a sudden. He had to go on shooting for the fire sequence almost throughout the night though he had to report for school the next morning. Though he was running a temperature of 104 degrees thanks to the heat on the sets generated due to the raging fire, he recovered from the state and reported to school the next day."

Ravi Bhatia goes on. "There were at least six people employed by Ekta's production house Balaji Films to see to it that Raunak didn't suffer at any time due to the intensity of the fire and to save him in case he got trapped inside. I was also present on the sets."
