'Karishma Mehta is the fresh face of 2005'

Twenty-two-year-old Karishma Mehta can't stop corking the fizz, quite literally. This Almeida Park resident has just landed herself a one-year contract with Limca after being voted the Limca Fresh Face of the year 2005, at a competition held on Jan 18 at the Gateway of India.

"It feels great," she gushes. A post graduate student of business management at Sydneham College, Karishma sent in her pictures for the contest when she saw an ad in a local daily in Dec 2004.

"I wanted to pursue modelling, so this was a good opportunity for me to enter the field," she says.

Over 4,000 students from 30 colleges participated in the month-long talent hunt. Out of all the applicants 150 were chosen for the semi-finals. "At the semi-finals we had one-on-one interviews with Cory Walia, after which 15 of us were shortlisted for the finals," says Karishma.

The contestants had to undergo intensive grooming. Marc Robinson and Cory Walia gave the contestants tips on various aspects of modelling like make-up and cat walking. Says Mehta, "I enjoyed the sessions as both Marc Robinson and Cory Walia were very helpful."

The finals on Jan 18 had the 15 finalists walking the ramp in casual and evening wear. They also answered a question asked by the judges.

Mehta recalls, "I was asked why I thought I should be the Limca face of the year, to which I replied that I thought I was cool, refreshing and attractive, just like the drink."

Speaking about the competition, Mehta says, "The competition was very tough." Mehta says she hopes to make it big in the world of modelling. She adds, "I would love to be a a part of some good videos too. Of course, I want to act in films as well."

Karishma says she lays a lot of emphasis on fitness and follows a strict fitness regime, which includes daily workouts and walks at Joggers Park. "I also watch what I eat," she says.
